Rating: Summary: Irreplaceable rechargeable battery wears out after 3 years. Review: My Palm V is about 3 years old and the battery stopped recharging. When I called Palm tech-support they were unhelpful and said that I should try resetting the unit. I was told that in order to find out why the unit was not recharging, I should pay $25 to find out what the problem is, or send the unit in for $100 to repair it (hardly worth it when you consider the price of a new unit). Unfortunately, the battery is factory installed and cannot be replaced (except by Palm.) This is either built-in obsolence or sloppy quality control. I am very disappointed.
Rating: Summary: The Palm V connected organizer: Put your mind at ease Review: I am the very satisfied owner of the Palm V connected organizer. I had long wanted a hand held organizer, one that would have both computer interchangeable abilities and one that would be able to perform different applications. Christmas day was a happy one for me last year, not only because of the brimming smiles on my children's faces; but because that is when I received the Palm V as a gift from my Santa (my wife!).After giving the product and it's instructions a look over, within moments I was on my way and began the charging procedures necessary prior to it's use. This was my only initial disappointment, having to wait for the initial charging that takes 4 hrs. I couldn't wait to tinker with my new toy, and it was a bit annoying. After completing the charge up, I installed the cd that came with the product to familiarize myself with it. The cd is both quite informative and very easy to follow. Then I was ready to begin to learn about my new toy. Looks can be deceiving when it comes to the appearance of the Palm V. In viewing the device, with it's ultra sleek, thin design; one might come to the conclusion it could be nothing more than your basic address/date book. This little "power packer" (as I like to call it) is simply amazing! The applications that can be utilized with the Palm V as well as the storage capacities are as follows: 1) Address book: that holds up to 6000 addresses 2) Appointment record: that records up to 3000 appointments 3) E-mail functioning: that can receive up to 200 e-mail messages 4) Memo pad: that can hold up to 1500 memos 5) To Do List: that records up to 1500 to-do items 6) Expense Reports 7) Games 8) Security 9) Calculator (All storage figures are approximate, and flexible according to the overall storage capacity of 2 MB) The Palm V also comes complete with the necessary software to facilitate all functions on the organizer. Other items that came with my Palm V were the synchronizing cradle & battery recharger, the handbook, an adapter, a protective cover, and one metal stylus and a spare plastic one. While the Palm V comes to you with all the pre-programming stated in my epinion, it also has the capability of being able to receive downloads from the internet to expand its functions, or to simply download games to play on this hand held device. The ease of operation of the Palm V is remarkable. On it's face are are 5 buttons on the metal frame and an area on screen with 4 buttons (to be used with the stylus), as well as an area for information input or free hand graffiti writing. All of these help the user quickly and efficiently operate the Palm V to expedite the tasks at hand. The device also has a back light that can come in rather handy. Input of information into the Palm V can be done in a number of ways. One can access the keyboard on the device, or use special graffiti free hand writing to input the desired material. The device may also be directly hooked up to your PC and the information typed in with your computer's keyboard. The greatest thing about the Palm V is the ability to transfer data between the device and your computer. The ability to be able to access e-mail, download information from the internet or your computer, for me is a God send; and in my opinion nothing sort of revolutionary! To process the transference of information, the Palm V needs to be placed into the HotSync cradle. Then the user just presses the HotSync button on the device to perform the HotSync operation. It proves to be completely user friendly as far as the exchange between the organizer and the computer. Maintaining your organizer requires as little as a few minutes charging a day of the Palm V, by placing it in its cradle. No need to buy batteries, it is self contained with a Lithium ion rechargeable battery. It is so small in size and weighs a mere 4 ounces, it easily is carried in a coat pocket; both comfortably and unnoticed. My main use for the Palm V is during my business hours. It is always on my person, for me to access at a moment's notice, to jot down things I need to remember (which are many with my bad recall). Whether it be to record an appointment that I have just confirmed with a client, or a note to myself; the Palm V has become an invaluable device; one that has proven to make my day much more pleasant and hassle free. No more need to run to a desk for a paper or pen, or to ask my callers to hold on; I am always ready with my Palm V on hand. If you do not have any prior experience with a hand held organizer of this kind, and always thought about purchasing one, I would highly recommend the Palm V. Once you have had a device like this, you will never want to be without one. Just like all the modern luxuries in life, what you don't have you do without and don't miss; but what you've had and have no longer, is greatly missed and still desired for easier living. Thank you Palm V for making my life, just a little bit easier!
Rating: Summary: I never knew how much I needed this toy! Review: I love my Palm V! I won it over the internet and now I don't leave home without it! Very simple to use and EXTREMELY useful. I store telephone numbers, my date book, grocery lists, myriads of other lists for work and home, and just yesterday I downloaded a trial copy of SplashPhoto that lets me show a slide show of family pictures on my Palm V. A GREAT electronic toy!!!
Rating: Summary: Like it; wish I had a Vx Review: I bought my V a year ago. I love its size. I take it everywhere. Recently I bought an OmniSky. It's now an indispensable tool again. The only problem is, I wish there were more memory. Get a Vx or wait for something better if you intend to use it wirelessly.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: I got it from as a gift from my wife, it has helped me get well organized. Has all the functions a busy person needs to get arround and be effective in a busy world. I had a litle touble with it, but the people of 3com helped me a lot.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, but already being pushed to last generation. Review: When I hear PDA, I would like to now envision a device that may look roughly like the Palm V, but has a lot more packed in it. Palm V is an excellent device and it is a great buy for the sake of the technology's first step. But, after using it for about a year now, I am being selfish. I want more memory, I want color, I want sound and I want a floating connection to the rest of the world. So, my advice - when you buy a PDA, go for something with at least color and more memory (for the sake of technology's next step). You are going to run out of the Palm V's 2MB if you are like me and like to download all those available applications. Palm Vx has 8MB memory which should be enough for the time being, but I want more (Sorry !). I am looking at the PDA to be the materialisation of Isaac Asimov's vision of a hand held device which is carried by everyone in the world and has a unique identification number. So if you want to talk to your sister, just punch in her id number and there she is on the screen looking at you and yelling at you for buzzing her when she was in the shower !! Our privacy is going to be under fire, but it is going to be fun all the same. Asimov said that by 2010, this will be a reality. And, the world is fast getting there. Palm V is only an initial step !! My advice - go for the next step.
Rating: Summary: A Great Device! But, Review: I am giving this great device 5 stars, because it really works great, got my life organized, and is all-around amazing. It has plenty of memory for my needs, and the battery lasts forever! It really beats carrying around a 2-lb organizer (which I never did, so I MISSED appointments, concerts, birthday parties, etc.). HOWEVER...I really hate how the power button gets pushed when I don't want it to. When I put it in my purse, I can hear the little button going "beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep." I don't think I should have to resort to sticking little adhesive bits of rubber on my Palm or cutting a hole in my case to prevent this. For this reason alone I am considering "downgrading" to the new Palm m100 which seems to have solved this problem. Otherwise, I love my Palm V!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Beware poor-quality screen Review: I have been disillusioned with this product for three reasons: 1) After only two months of use, the graffiti writing area on the screen was very scratched and only recognized my writing about 70% of the time. Palm would not replace the screen. 2) The green power button on the top of the unit works only about 10% of the time after only 6 months of use. 3) The Compaq Aero comes with 8 times the memory, 10 times more applications and still costs the same! Conclusion. Over-priced PDA. My next PDA will be of the PocketPC persuasion.
Rating: Summary: Well Pleased Review: I used to have a psion 3a which was pretty good but basic. I sold and upgraded to a Philips Velo which I was very disappointed with. While using this, I was lucky to WIN a Palm V and have been very pleased. I junked the Velo and use the Palm synchronised to MS Outlook. I work at the desk during the day with Outlook and before leaving I just hit the synch button. Likewise, out on the road and recording all important bits and bobs, I immediately update my desktop on my return. This combination is the best I have used.
Rating: Summary: The concept is great but execution is poor Review: I love and hate my Palm V. It took me a long time to get up the courage to ditch my paper planner, but I've been growing more and more dependent on the Palm. That's great except for all the glitches. I've had it lock up so it couldn't be turned off (would only time out). Now it won't synch at all, even though I've upgraded and reinstalled everything I can imagine, including Outlook. It's also impossible to mass delete items, you have to open them up one by one. So think hard before you make the leap. I don't know if there are less glitch-prone handhelds, I just hope so.
