Rating: Summary: schaaaaa-winng!! Review: Go buy it. If you can develop the habit of using it, there is nothing like it for getting organized! Portability, durability, useability!
Rating: Summary: PalmV is a great machine, with upgradable memory Review: Please check your facts about the product that you are reviewing. In fact the PalmV is upgradable to 8Mb, far better than the original 2Mb that it comes with. This gives the user much more flexability to store information and programs which are downloadable from the net.
Rating: Summary: From Apple Newton Message Pad to Palm V Review: I have always used the Apple Newton Message Pad 2000, but the size and weight has forced me to look elsewhere. From my several years of experience using a PDA, I have found that at the most I use the PDA as an address book and scheduler. Every where I travel these days, I can get internet connection, so I do no need internet connection on my PDA to check mail.Overall - Palm V is an excellent product Cons: 1. The backlight leaves much to be desired, I just cannot get used to it when I compare it with the Newton. 2. The screen is very reflective. 3. It lacks a few polished applications such as a world clock, a currency converter, even the built in country list is incomplete. Example no mention of any middle east countries where I am currently working as a consultant. The expense program leaves much to be desired. 4. No built in modem 5. No voice recorder 6. Leather cover is cheap and detracts the overall quality of the product. Pros: 1. Weight and size - five star here! 2. Clarity of text excellent under full light. 3. Graifiti gives better accuracy than the newton free style writing. 4. Hot Sync works with Microsoft Outlook! - nothing short of briliant 5. Long battery life ie when fully charged 6. Single base unit for charger and hotsync. I bought my unit in England and as such the adaptor is auto voltage! and comes complete with different plug adaptors.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding, but with minor flaws Review: I had an older PalmPilot (PalmPro) which I used for a couple years, but decided to buy the new Palm V based mostly on the looks and smaller size. I use it (and the old one) mostly for names, addresses and so on so memory is not much of an issue. One thing I really love about the Plam V is the ability to get my e-mails at the end of the day and read them on the ride home whereas before I would print them all out and have a bunch of papers with me. I personaly love the Palm V design and size. I have two minor complaints about the unit though. First is the backlight. Why is it like that? The one on my PalmPilot Pro is clear, but the backlight on the Palm V is useless. The second thing is the cover included with the unit. It does not 'snap' or lock down, so I find it always comes open in my briefcase or desk drawer. Some of the other attorneys at my firm have Windows CE devices. Personaly, I like the Windows CE OS because the layout seems more natural. The speed of the Palm OS is a plus, though.
Rating: Summary: Your Personal Genie Review: So far So Good, the Palm V is the space age gadget to help organize and live a better life. Save those brain cells for processing rather than retaining and retrieving information. It's the Palm's job. A lot of PDA's out there especially on the Windows CE platform. Having my Windows 98 crash every now and then made me a disbeliever of Windows CE and brought me to Palm V. Pricey, but useful. You must tailor it to your specific needs. However, the following improvements are a MUST! 3Com, I hope you're reading this.. 1. The belt clip accessory should be standard because most people don't have a shirt pocket to carry it around. 2. More(Lots) of RAM . Your ultimate goal should be to fit an encyclpopedia in it. For the time being, a nice dictionary, a few references, and lots of free space. 3. WATERPROOF!! If watches can be, why can't Palm? Should be able to use it in the shower, pool etc. 4. Voice recorder built in. At least there should be 5 mintes available.Better still, speech to text. 5. How about a small toothpick, tweezer etc.tucked into the Palm? Similar to the Swiss army knife. There are a lot of improvements needed, but till then, the Palm V will assist, entertain you in ways you never thought possible. In this world of almost every website requiring a login and password, and your countless computer file passwords, wouldn't it be nice to have it in one place? Or howabout reading Sherlock Holmes on your palm, and even a virtual pet(Tamagotchi) to suit your needs, your golf score, your blood type and bank accounts..........you name it, and Palm V will be by your side to feedback should you decide to buy one........... email me if you wish any further info.
Rating: Summary: Housewives of the world, listen up Review: I'm not working in book publishing anymore--I'm home with my two kids these days. But I bought a Palm V anyway, mostly to digitize my address book and mostly because I'm a gadget hound. What I have found is that I use this thing every single day, for any number of highly suburban, non-office-oriented tasks: keeping track of kids' repeating appointments and school schedules, not to mention my own stuff; making detailed to do lists that don't disappear into the kitchen trash can; setting up address lists for birth announcements, Christmas cards, thank you notes; keeping memos of all the household maintenance that needs doing; keeping track of volunteer stuff. Hell, I even used it in the hospital to keep track of who came to visit when I had my second baby. And Solitaire is a very fine way to put oneself to sleep after the 4 a.m. baby feeding. I have a Mac and have had very little trouble syncing with it. Fact is, the best thing about the Palm V for a domestic goddess like me is its portability--I hot sync it only for backup, and I rarely use the computer software. It would be nice to have a voice function, and a leash might keep my three year old from fishing it out of my purse and tapping endlessly on it. But it has survived his curiosity remarkably well--he even dropped it once in what should have been a fatal accident. In all, a great thing for moms of the world.
Rating: Summary: good, but memo button is really annoying Review: as a first time palm user, i'm very impressed with the palm v. however, the bottom right corner "memo" button will get pressed at the slightest inadvertant pressure, even if you buy the metal case. finally, i melted the corner of the metal case to fix this problem. but please beware of this little annoyance.
Rating: Summary: Ultra-portablility is a major advantage of this great device Review: I have always been convinced that a paper planner like Day Timer is a superior way to organize your life because you can see the big picture. I recently got a Palm V and realize I was wrong. This is a phenomenal device for organizing yourself. Others reviewers have already described the main benefits of the Palm System. I work with a lot of patients with attention deficit disorder and usually have to focus on organization skills. It is critical to have all you organizing stuff in one place, and to have that with you all, repeat, all the time. The are few reasons not to carry this one (if you have pockets). I have mine in my pants pocket (even jeans) 24 hours a day. The extra money is not for good looks but for the advantage of the smallest portable device. Learn to use the timer you remind you (even nag you) of what you need to do (it will go off 10 times). The solution to the buttons going off in your pocket is to lock it, especially easily done with Launcher III. Or using preferences you can assign a button or penstroke all the way up the screen to shut it off. I have a mac, and I have had no trouble with the interface and have downloaded some very useful programs, the best being WhatzUp, Actioneer, and QuickNotes. You can download books as well. I went to Spain and had a whole dictionary and currency converter in it. 2 or 2.8 Mb goes a long way. Remember that this is a PDA, not a substitute for a desktop computer Use the internet to find out how to customize your Palm, starting at the Palm site.
Rating: Summary: Good device when you know its limits and purpose Review: The Palm V, which I own for about couple of months is very good if you know what it's for and how you can use it best. However, if you think it is a multimedia device, or if you think it is the ultimate gaming machine etc. you'll be disappointed. It is great for carrying your address book, scribbling a reminders on the road, playing small games when you have some spare time (mostly on a bus or train) and reading E-mails offline. The best thing about it is its ultra portability. Unmatched by any other device (so far), you can practically carry it anywhere you go. It may be viewed as your personal companion. In the chain of computing gadgets, you can have a desktop PC, notebook, handheld, Palm V. Before I bought it, I thought about the Casio E100 (color with 65k color multimedia device), however, I knew it was much bulkier and therefore it would mostly be in my briefcase rather than my pocket or hand (it is between the handheld and the Palm V, so it can be in addition to the Palm V if you have extra cash). I suggest however, 3 improvements that can be the "killer app" for 3COM. 1. Increase the 2 MB to 8MB and leave the price almost intact (which we know can be done). 2. Add recording feature if possible within its size and 3. Add the QuickNote app. as a standard to the device (for hand written notes). The price of the Palm V is nearing $300. In 6 months I believe it will be about $250 and if those 3 improvements are added - it will be a real winner.
Rating: Summary: Palm V is a fresh breath of simplicity. Review: Great product, works as advertised, simple to use and lots of good software out there. I have been buying PDAs for about six years now, and most recently was a Psion Series 5 enthusiast. I bought Palm Vs for my wife and myself and we are beside ourselves because these Palm Vs work effortlessly! For us (she's in sales, I'm an attorney) the holy grail of PDAs is the ability to synchronize effortlessly with your entire desktop (Outlook), and the Palm V is the only PDA I have EVER had that worked as advertised. My wife is a tough customer for new technologies, and had never been impressed with all the whistles and bells that CE and EPOC machines offer. When she picked up the Palm V and was up, running, and actually using the Palm V in her work every day, I knew it was a winner. I think the key to all Palms is simplicity, and an acknowledgment that the PDA is a satellite to your desktop. You rove from meeting to meeting, gathering notes, etc. and then synch the whole thing with Outlook when you get back to the office. If you want the capacity to write 5 page memos on a tiny screen, you are crazy, but you can do that on the Palm if you want to. One of my clients uses a common database and 30+ Palms to keep all personnel tasked properly and up to date. Our entire international group is buying Palms, and my wife is now buying Palms for her entire salesforce so that they can share contact databases and schedules. The O'Reilly publication on Palms is well worth the money, and the shareware CDROM contains a few programs that are crucial to my use of the Palm.
