Rating: Summary: Cool and handy Review: This product can make your life one step easier
Rating: Summary: Serves its purpose but no more..... Review: I bought a Palm IIIxe, and was excited as first. When I received it, I opened the box to find lots catalogs and some documentation. After using it for a couple of weeks, I realized it is OK for keeping contact info, and barely OK for keeping track of my calander. Its not very intuitive, and required a lot of tapping in just the right places to get things filled out just the way you want them. The display is readable in dim and bright light, but its so awful to look at, after a while, who cares. The display looks like a cheap casio watch, which is why the battery life is very good. The battery life is also good because its VERY SLOOOOW! Needless to say I sold it, and bought an HP Jornada 548. Wow, what a difference! The last reviewer talks of clunky PocketPCs, but this is actually slightly smaller than the Palm IIIxe, though it does weigh 2-3 ounces more. It is MUCH faster, and the resolution of the screen is fantastic. The text on the Palm's screen looked blocky and when I tried to use mapping software, it was nearly impossible to make out anything! I use mapping software on the Jornada and its just like on your home computer. Absolutely beautiful and readable! The Jornada even knows when to capitalize for you when your writing, and the text is so much easier to read. The battery life is not as long as the Palms, but will last all day, and recharges very quickly (half charge just takes a few minutes on the cradle). I will never need to buy any more batteries for it. After using the Jornada now for a week, it really makes me feel like the Palms and Handsprings are merely cheap plastic toys, that do nothing more than hold names and phone numbers.
Rating: Summary: Great organizer Review: I received the Palm IIIXE a couple of weeks ago as a gift. I am a novice to handhelds and therefor did not know a great deal about what I had just obtained. I had never seen one demonstrated and did not know anyone who owned a handheld. I had one of those twenty or thirty dollar Franklin "organizers" and thought it must be about the same thing, with perhaps more storage capacity. I was never confident enough in that product to store anything in it that I did not have a hard copy back up of somewhere else. The first thing that impressed me about the Palm compared to the other device is how user friendly it is. I have been able to easily enter and retrieve information with the PALM in a manner that I only dreamed of doing previously. I mean it is light years ahead of the other organizer and I would never use or even consider purchasing one of those again! It is of course more expensive but well, well worth the extra cost. Although mine was a gift if something happens to it, I can't imagine functioning without purchasing a replacement. Although the handheld display is black and white, after syncing (a one push button process)all of your data is transferred to your work, and or home computer in full color(assuming you do have a color monitor). I recently downloaded the desktop 4.0 from PALM for free, which is even more user friendly and appealing. For me, the address book alone is worth the cost. I copied all of my sqeaky, desk top robbing rolodex, onto the palm and have removed it, hopefully permanently, from my desk. I feel confident in doing so especially with the easy and quick ability to back up everything to my work and home computer. Any new numbers and info I now receive, goes directly into the Palm. Downloading the news, (avantgo) books, and other info is fantastic. Its nice to have the news in such a compact device where others cannot readily ascertain what you are viewing! In my case it has been great to have while waiting for a meeting or an appointment. It sure beats staring at the wall or looking at a 3 month old 'People' magazine. I do not at all consider myself to be a gadget or computer type person, but after having used this Palm for two weeks it would be really difficult for me to imagine not always have it close at hand in the future. In fact I inadvertantly left mine on my desk at work today, and am going into withdrawls not having it here for a nightly download! The order, storage capacity, and ease of use of the PALM IIIxe is in my opinion fantastic, and I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in this type of device.
Rating: Summary: Palms are....Grrrreat! Review: Yes, I bought the IIIxe. This device has really helped me a lot in school. The memory is great and the design and especially the flip cover is really coo. I use my palm a lot. In fact I have an event which I was told a year or two in advance, and I know I was going to forget right away so I put a reminder in my palm. So a couple years from now it will beep on that exact date. This is the coolest thing I have ever gotten (except for my girlfriend)
Rating: Summary: One of my most prized possesions! Review: I think if I were to be parted from my Palm IIIxe, I would not be able to go on living :). This little device will keep you organized and productive, keep you entertained on a long car trip with Game Boy-like games, or can even serve as you watch! The bundled software is excellent, consisting of a phone book, calendar, to do list (my favorite), notepad, e-mail reader, and finance tracker. It also comes with software for your PC and a serial cradle to transfer files between your computer and Palm. What some people don't know is that it comes with additional software (a couple of games, a scientific calculator, etc.) that you can install from the computer software. Also, if you go to Palmgear.com, there is a nearly infinite amount of software you can get. And since you have 8 MB of memory, you should not have to worry about running out of space anytime soon. I have installed about 20 games and I have a lot of entries in my phonebook and calendar, and I still have about 7 MB free. Other than the lack of a rechargeable battery pack, this Palm is great, and at it's current price, it's a steal! Pick one up today, and get rid of that old, outdated paper organizer now!
Rating: Summary: major display problems Review: The Palm IIIxe is an ok organizer. It has to do list, memo, calender, calculator... But this unit has display problems. I had mine for a week, and my battery was about 30%. Then my display wouldnt work. I left the palm alone for a couple of days. When i turned it on, the screen was blinking. I recomend getting the Visor Deluxe because it is more durable and it also has the expansion slot in the back.
Rating: Summary: Great product but could be more durable Review: I am very happy with my Palm IIIxe's performance as a computing platform. No complaints there. However, I have to take some issue with the durability of the unit. I have had a good bit of trouble with the screen. I've had a total of 3 different unit over a year or so, and each time the unit failed becuse of a screen problem.
Rating: Summary: palm pilots Review: I would NOT recomend Palm pilots. My friend has to fix them almost every day. If you want a good handheld, check sony.
Rating: Summary: Defective right out of the box Review: After much deliberation and comparison I decided to buy a Palm IIIxe. I was excited about this purchased and eager to organise my life. Right away it had problems. In the first 24 hours I had it I spent over 3 hours on the phone with Palm customer support. These were a sad group of individuals. They kept having me try the same things over and over again. My problem was the Palm Desktop would Hotsync, but would not send my datebook over to the handheld. I was getting angry and telling them "look, I'm just going to return it, there is something wroung with it." "No," they said, "we can fix it its in the Palm desktop not the hand held." So I went over and over the same backing up of data and resetting the handheld and reinstalling the software with three different support persons. Finally, I said "Look, I have the info I have entered in the desk-top backed up. I'm just going to return it for a new one." Finally the Palm support guy admitted to me that, Yes, The handheld was defective. By this time I wanted nothing to do with the Palm Brand, But I did not want to lose my Information I had already entered. So I returned it for another Palm IIIxe. This one appears to work fine. But, The entire ordeal of going around and around with their customer support has soured me on their products. I'm glad I don't own stock in Palm!
Rating: Summary: Easy to use, handles great, solid display in the dark Review: I'd had it for 3 months now. What I would say is, what would I do without it. I use outlook to keep track with my contacts and my schedules. So Transfering my data is like watching TV. You don't have to do anything but sync. I also keep a copy of important mails in my palm with Eudora. Again, it works great. I also use it to do a lot of readings while I travel / have nothing better to do. The back light works greater than I'd expected. It just feel like a black and white LCD screen in front of you. ....and I spent my time playing tetris on it during my probability and statistics class. :) Just get it. It's worth the money.
