Rating: Summary: Fantastically Priced, Neat Product, Breaks. Review: After a great deal of research as to the best price/performance I could get out of a handheld, I decided that the Palm IIIxe was the cream of the crop. I wanted long battery life, a programmable environment, and simple functionality -- I found all three in the Palm IIIxe and felt I needed the 8Mb of RAM for flexibility's sake. I bought my Palm IIIxe at Amazon.I should mention that I was buying this new Palm from Amazon because, two years later, my previous Palm had died. Why had I waited two years? It was because I had let my first Palm become the keystone of my life -- with all of my appointments, phone numbers, etc. Then it died at a really bad time for me. While I had every once in a while made a backup, I had no replacement Palm and was too poor & busy to get one. It made a big, gaping hole in my life and it took the two years before I was willing to trust one again. So I got the Palm IIIxe and the Palm Keyboard (which is, incidentally, a fantastic addition) and merrily felt the need to get a laptop ebb away. It worked fine for me, for a year. Then it died. Kaput. Thunk. Not just batteries, not even just the BIOS chip needing replacement. Dead, dead. Just like my first. This I don't understand; I hadn't been doing anything strange with it -- cooking, scuba, juggling, etc. Just using it, regular-like. And it died. I grabbed a fresh Palm from somone and synced it up with my computer. Instead of syncing all my old data and contacts to my new Palm, however, it simply erased the database on the computer and replaced it with that of a fresh PalmOS install. Meaning it had just overwritten my backup. The purpose of the Palm is to replace paper and notes. To be with you always as your handy companion; your dog, as it were. But my dog keeps getting run over in traffic. I think it's time to look elsewhere - I cannot trust Palm with my data.
Rating: Summary: I like the thousands of programs available for it! Review: I don't actually own it, but my dad does. He lets me use it when I want to. It is really exciting to download extra cool programs for it. You can turn it into a universal remote control, use it as a professional graphing calculator or even attach it to a robot. It's amazing what you can do with it! The best thing I like about it is being able to play chess wherever I go.
Rating: Summary: The Sweet Spot in Performance and Price among Palm PDAs Review: Sadly discontinued by Palm, this PDA represents the sweet spot in price to performance among Palms. You can find used models for (low prices) and it offers four times the memory of the new M100's which have the same price point. Also, the ROM is flashable, which I believe is not true for new low end PDAs. I loved mine so much I bought one for my wife and father. The only slight drawback it has is the white on black backlighting can take some time to get used to.
Rating: Summary: I life-saver Review: I purchased this PDA earlier this year and have used it ever since. It's become a habit to carry it around. I use it for practicly everything. I am 17 and currently a Senior in High School with 3 out of 4 semesters completed for my CCNA certification. I carry all my important notes and memos on it. I don't think I could live without it again.
Rating: Summary: Good while it lasted... Review: It was great for a while but then after about 4-5 months kept having display problems then no power then display again. Spent what seemed like hours on hold with support and got no where. My wife threw out receipt so now I am out of luck. Going to iPaq next. The only other complaint is that it is hard on batteries (2 weeks max and don't let them run out or you start over)
Rating: Summary: Unreliable product; Palm's Customer Service Unacceptable Review: I purchased the Palm IIIxe in January 2001. It was used infrequently but failed, apparently due to a hardware problem. After much unnecessary redtape, Palm sent a replacement---but without the plastic cover. Numerous phone calls, faxes, mailings at my expense in an attempt to secure a cover were met with complete stonewalling. The amount of my time and their time they were willing to expend to avoid responsibility to provide the cover that should have been included in the first place was extraordinary. (In contrast, Amazon was most helpful in assisting in securing duplicate receipts to verify purchase to Palm). The ultimate frustration---the replacement IIIxe was defective, too. Have not determined why, it appears to be related to power problem. Have yet to get beyond the first layer of customer service "support." Palm's customer service is the worst of any tech company I've dealt with in 15 years.
Rating: Summary: I can't live without my Palm... Review: This little organizer contains my whole life! My fiance bought it for me as a gift, after he received an m100 and I wouldn't stop playing with it. He knew that I would want something a little more advanced, so we decided on this model. I have all of my addresses divided into categories (family, friends, work, businesses, special interests) and have personalized the four "extra" categories as birthday/birthday/anniversary/website. I keep all of my work hours in the memo section, since I work part time and my company is known to have screwed up paychecks in the past. I have a leather case with velcro that opens like a book that makes my Palm easy to access. I love my Palm IIIxe, and have had it for seven months now with no problems. I just need to remember to back it up on my computer every once in awhile just in case!
Rating: Summary: Great Palm Review: No matter how sophisitcated the handheld, I still end up using it as an organizer and this is one of the best values available.
Rating: Summary: Nice product at first Review: This was my first Palm purchase and I originally bought it to replace my Day Runner. I chose it because the price was reasonable and for the expanded memory. I was really pleased at how easy it was to set up and all of the documentation it came with. With all of the applications that are available, I use it for virtually everything. However, after having it for a year, I am now looking for a newer model to replace it with. I am having problems with the machine spontaneously resetting and for the last 2 months I have had to redigitize every 1-2 days. You also will definitely spend your money in batteries, I replace mine about about every 3 weeks. In spite of the problems, it was certainly worth the money especially since I got a sweet deal on the price. If you are looking for Palm to start with this is a perfect choice.
Rating: Summary: time for a new model Review: When I first got the this Palm I liked it, but after some time I became really frustrated with the difficulty in seeing the screen easily. It is very poorly backlit so that you must turn up the contrast which then drains batteries fast. In addition, I dropped it yesterday and broke the screen. Replacement screens cost $100.00 according to the support person I spoke with. So, this was a good starter for me and I will stay with Palm OS due to the tremendous number of programs written for it, but my next palm will have a color screen and be rechargeable. Probably will get the Sony Clie PEG610C.
