Summary: My life before this was in shambles
Review: If you are anything like I used to be before I bought my IIIxe - you had to-do lists, post it notes, and notebooks full of meeting notes. I chose this version because of the memory - it is the V without the lithium and 2 oz. heavier - but much less $$$. Plus, with the C it seems as though Palm is building more on the III platform - no immediate worries about being obsolete. I organized a move cross-country, started a new job, and kept sane thanks to this organizer. Names are easily found and categorized, dates are remembered, and life seems a bit saner. One of the great functions- is the security function- masking contact information and denying access to anyone who doesn't have the password. I worry I may lose mine due to carelessness - but I don't worry about some stranger calling my contacts.

Summary: Great Tool
Review: I had seen them, but never used one. I really had no comprehension of the capability of this small handheld which I now carry with me at all times. If I am in New York, Boston, Chicago, DC, or San Francisco, I have a list of restaurants (With reviews and location instructions) that are updated with each sync procedure. The program is Vindingo and one city is free. I only wish I had purchased a Palm sooner. If the Qualcom combo cellphone/palm model has the capability of the IIIxe, I may upgrade. Until such time, I think I will be happy with the IIIxe.

Summary: This is my 2nd Palm device
Review: Here's the kind of great things you can expect from a palm device.

I have owned a PalmPilot since May 1997 and have used it daily since then. It has 1 meg of memory, but oddly enough has never seemed to fill up. Currently it holds 270+ addresses, 600+ appointments, 200 e-mails, over 200 to-do items, and many shareware/freeware applications. The only reservatiton I've ever had about it was it's low screen contrast--sometimes I have difficulty reading the display in high-glare conditions such as indoors with bright reflected sunlight.

When I learned that the IIIxe had a new high-contrast screen, I went to a local store and test drove it. One of the employees let me take into a room with very bad light conditions. Wow, was I impressed! I could see the display **much** better. I did a side-by-side comparison and decided right then that I needed a new one. So I bought the IIIxe a week later.

Now for the technically cool part--I went home and synched my old PalmPilot with the desktop one last time to make sure my data was all secure. Then I put batteries in my new Palm IIIxe, put it in the docking cradle (the old one), and hit the synch button.

The PC software recognized my new Palm with no data and asked if I wanted to restore the old data from my hard drive. I answered "yes", and instantly all my data was pulled into the new Palm. It was flawless. Even the programs that were installed on my old device were carried over. How cool is that? Total time to get up-and-running with my new Palm: 60 seconds. Try *that* with any other organizer.

I eventually installed the new desktop software and am investigating AvantGo (free software kind of like PointCast for the Palm).

I'll let other reviewers tell you about the device itself...I just wanted to discuss my "upgrade" since you aren't as likely to hear that.

Summary: Organization made easy (VERY easy)
Review: First I have to say, if you don't already own a Palm organizer, buy one fast... it is with doubt the best buy you'll ever make.

I bought my Palm about 2 months ago, and I must say that I can't belevie that I have ever live without it. It stores all of you appointments, to-do items, memos, contacts, and much much more. There's about 10.000 apps and games avaliable for the platform, and it's almost all freeware or shareware. And the way the Palm connects with your computer is absolutly briliant; You plug it into the cradle, press the sync button, and within seconds your computer and your Palm is syncroniced (and it works every time, I have never found one single error in the syncronization process).

I currently have 15 big games (Gameboy size) 10 large books (1000+ pages), about 20 apps and there's still a lot of room left for more.

The difference between all the different versions of the Palm is only looks and size of memory. All the versions have flash memory (exept the IIIe), so that you can upgrade the OS.

Thank you Palm Computing for making my life a lot easier.

Summary: Best bang for the buck
Review: The other reviews are helpful but I will boil it all down to this.

Three main reasons to buy a Palm IIIxe:

1. 8 meg of Ram. There is alot of helpful Palm software available. Some of them can take up a good chunk of memory. The 2 and 4 meg models just don't cut it.

2. Batteries. I can use regular AAA cells and swap out in a matter of seconds. I presently use the NIMH rechargables. I always have 2 at the ready. The rechargable alkalines last a long time between recharging and I understand that Lithium cells are now also available. For $20 you are power set for a few years.

3. Versatile. It does every thing else the others can do except for the expensive wireless connections of the Palm VII. But then the Palm VII doesn't have 8 meg of RAM.

Of course the Palm IIIxe has the new 3.5 OS.

Summary: Throw out the paper organizers
Review: Had the Palm IIIxe for two weeks now and I no longer use my day planner. As an Executive Director of an Eye Bank I am always looking for a phone number, or my sched. This Palm IIIxe works like a charm. The screen is not as bright or sharp as many reviews claim in dim lighting, but generally its darn good. The Palm Vx is the same device as the IIIxe only a liitle smaller with a metal case and costs about $150.00 more. Save your money and get the IIIxe instead. Got my Palm here on Amazon! Delivered in three days! Nice job Amazon.

Summary: The ONLY choice!
Review: I had been researching PDAs for almost a year. I looked at the Palm, the Handspring, the Helio (by V-Tech), and even the new Pocket PC compatibles. I decided Palm was the way to go. After all, why not go to the source of the technology! I decided on the IIIxe for a couple of reasons. 1) More memory. 2) Newest OS. 3) Great value.

When I first turned it on, I was nervous because it got hung up on the intro splash screen. But, after a soft reset, I was up and running! It is very stable, a great tool, and tons of fun to boot!

I found Graffiti just a bit limiting, but I eventually downloaded Jot by CIC and the handwriting recognition is blazingly fast and super accuurate. There are so many third-party software programs, you can spend hours browsing and downloading great add-ons.

I had heard there was difficulty syncing with Outlook, but I didn't experience that.

Now I use my IIIxe for everything. Great companion at meetings for note taking, schedule and contact info swapping, and even playing Chess during those boring ones!

If you're in the market for a PDA, look no further than the expandable, upgradeable, and powerful Palm IIIxe.

Summary: Easy to use, tons of software, decent screen
Review: I purchased the Palm IIIxe over two months ago and it is very easy to use and powerful. I entered all of my personal and business contacts into the device with ease. The 8MB really comes in handy when adding extra applications and games. My Palm is already at 2+ megs which would have been impossible for the 2mb Palm III or Palm V. For the bucks this is a great purchase. If you have more to spend, go for the Palm color. If you have even more to spend go for the new HP Jornada Pocket PC with 32mb ram...the screen and the sound is great but you lose some of the excellent apps available for the Palm OS.

Summary: Solid but...
Review: Graffitti's ease is definitely over-rated. Graffiti is not that easy to use. I am definitely thinking of getting the keyboard to type in the huge amount of data (addresses and such) I need to reference. Also a downside not really mobile like the Palm V. This was my first outing with Palm after being paper and pen for years, and I would say that the Palm is really worthwile if you travel, if you have a lot of contacts, and if you are going to use it.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: Difficulty loading software onto device, hard to read screen, difficulty loading updated information. Overall a disappointing waste of time. There must be something better out there.
