Rating: Summary: 20/20 hindsight says buy the PalmV Review: I absolutely love my Palm IIIxe. But with 20/20 hindsight I wish I got the Palm V. While the Palm III was more in my price range, in the long run it would have evened out due to the fact that I'm going through a lot of batteries with the Palm III and the Palm V is rechargable.
Rating: Summary: excellent product Review: This is a well thought out product, and a great "peripheral brain". There is an incredible amount of software available for this product-many of it free on the Net. I work at a hospital and use it to store phone #, but it also has an entire PDR, and other medical data on it I was able to download off the Net at pharmaceutical and medical sites. I also looked at the new Pocket PC, which I found to be very good, but for right now this is a cheaper PDA and does the job.
Rating: Summary: I love my PALM Review: It is a great feeling to carry around your palm and always have information in your pocket. I use mine with avantgo.com to always have something to read. I load a few ebooks on. I also have it linked to my Micorsoft Money applications so I can always keep track of my finances. How great are these things! Pick one up!
Rating: Summary: Palm IIIxe vs. Handspring Review: It wasn't until after I had purchased my Palm that I realized there was something called a Handspring. Eager to know if I had made the right decision, I began researching the features of the two. They both have several unique things about them, but what the basic choice becomes is upgradeable (Palm) or expandable(Handspring). I don't even make a dent in the memory in my Palm, so the option of expanding the available memory didn't appeal to me. Another idea to consider, I don't think the Handsping has beaming capabilitites. The only disappointment with my Palm has been a quality issue (I've had to return it twice), which I have assured by salespeople as being highly abnormal.
Rating: Summary: More than just an organizer. Review: Do you like to have a good book with you for travel reading? Would you also like to unload your laptop and travel lighter? The Palm IIIxe and its 8Mb of memory makes this unit so much more useful than the 2Mb models selling for $100 less. The extra memory in the IIIxe allows me to keep two to three novels in the unit at all times, barely making a dent in the available RAM. Public domain literature, mostly classics, are free downloads from the Palm homepage along with the software to read them. I have used the SILO freeware to read novels like Jane Austen's "Emma" and "Mansfield Park," or Robert Louis Stevenson's "Kidnapped." I no longer need a laptop for word processing. Add the "GO" keyboard by Landware, and you have a fast way of inputting text, along with a word processor and a Thesaurus. The keyboard software allows you to export your Palm docs to your favorite word processor on your desktop. The Palm can replace your laptop for e-mail and web surfing on the road. If you add the Palm modem, and download the freeware from Eudora, you can write and send e-mail through a phoneline to your ISP. Eudora's web component allows you to access text from search engines like Yahoo or Alta Vista and visit websites. Click the AvantGo software that comes with the Palm and read Salon, Slate, or the front Page of the New York Times. AvantGo will also keep you up to date on your favorite stocks. All of these functions are available with the IIIxe making it much more versatile than the 2 Mb. models and just as useful as the more expensive V series. Also, one big advantage over the V series are the IIIxe's AAA batteries, available everywhere. With the V and VII series, you're into rechargeables.
Rating: Summary: AMAZING Device! I love it. Review: Tired of waiting 2 minutes to pull up information on a laptop? Get one of these Palm 3xe's. One button and it's on ready to serve you whatever information you want. I find the calendar, phone organizer, and task lists essential tools. My only complaint is my Outlook categories do not get down loaded with the data. So you have a choice. Do you want the categories on your desktop system or on the Palm? I choose to leave the "task" categories on the Palm 3xe and the "contacts" categories on the desktop system. It makes it harder to find some information if you are used to using categories and don't have them. I am still looking for software that will fix this problem. If you know where I can get this let me know. It took me only a few minutes to nail down the graffiti stylus motion to insert text. A little game "Giraffe" is included to help you learn. Play it for 30 minutes and you have it down. This Palm device has plenty of memory and the optional accessories are reasonably priced. I chose this over the Handspring, because it had the capability of upgrading the Operating System and I didn't see the need to add on cards.
Rating: Summary: Much more than an organizer! Review: First off, Palm finally has the 8DRAM patch for the IIIxe, and even though my unit was infected, I've had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever. In fact, this machine has far exceeded my expectations. I found it very easy to learn the "graffiti" handwriting (and even easier if you download a "hack" like Middlecaps.) More importantly, the freeware and shareware applications that I've downloaded (e.g., a more powerful calculator, pop-up "bug me" notes, a spreadsheet, a document reader, a customizable application launcher, and yes, even a few games) have turned my IIIxe into much more than an organizer -- it's truly a minicomputer! Fortunately, the IIIxe has 8MB of RAM to store all this stuff -- I wouldn't buy one with less memory. Also, Palm's customer support is great. When I had trouble syncing the first time, they walked me through the process and quickly solved the problem (the unit defaults to sync via modem instead of a direct serial connection -- kinda dumb since most people will sync right at their computer.) A great machine for the price, and there's still a LOT more I can do with it. (P.S. If you live in Boston, San Fran, NY, Chicago or D.C., I highly recommend downloading "Vindigo" to your Palm. Type in your location or destination and it gives you the best places to eat and be entertained -- current movie listings, restaurant reviews from Zagat, etc. And it updates automatically when you sync your Palm to your PC. A great app that makes the Palm that much better!
Rating: Summary: The best little gadget Review: I was going to buy the Palm IIIe, but it went out of stock. And then I called around and found out it would be out for a long time. Then I bought the Palm IIIxe. My little life has never been the same. Now I record all my assignments on it and every thing I have to do. Before my grades were losing it because I had a problem with turning in assignment. Now I have no problems. I have a 3.9 GPA. No regrets! But I have to admit, the grafiti handwriting system is a little hard to get used to. It's better to buy an add on keyboard! It's great!
Rating: Summary: Awesome computing in one neat package! Review: Folks, if you are in the market for a daily organizer, date book planner, calculator, address book and email system, then this is the system for you. I recently purchased this PDA after spending over a month comparing features with other similar products online and in the stores; and I've been loving my IIIxe ever since. At a moment's notice, with a simple touch of a button, my entire schedule from work to play is instantly at my fingertips. With the addition of the HotSync Cradle my desktop at work and my laptop at home are now on speaking terms again! I was forever changing and deleting on both systems with tons of info falling between the cracks. Now, with a simple push of a button all three systems are "Insync"! I've synchronized it with Netscape and Outlook, and enjoy the luxury of answering email and then replying via the cradle when I dock the palm. The 8mg's of memory, coupled with the long battery life of two small AAA's gives this little palm tool the power to handle future upgrades as well as the longevity to keep up with a hectic schedule. I've been using my IIIxe constantly for the past three weeks and still have over 80% of my charge left. The problem with the "8Dram" was addressed before my pilot hit the market, but I downloaded the test to check to ensure it was working. The procedure was painless and the total time invested from start to finish took approximately 20 minutes. I'm happy to report that my IIIxe and I are doing well, and working nicely with no errors or glitches to date! The Palm IIIxe gives you "the most bang for your buck". I highly recommend this item for those seriously considering purchasing a PDA. It will organize your life and make it that much easier! Go out and pick up a Palm IIIxe today! Shop Amazon.com!
Rating: Summary: Defective Operating Chips, No Known Cure Review: Just bought and twice in last week have lost all data due to "8DRAM" problem which Palm blames on subcontractor. Web site promises non-existent diagnostic test. Tech support cannot give date for fix. They offer to replace units with others which may be defective. Buy Handspring until Palm gets its production problems and warranty systems in place.
