Rating: Summary: Stop reading this and buy that sucker! Review: When I bought this Palm, I was planning on using it in school for keeping track of homework, taking notes in class, and playing pong or chess during lunch time. I quickly found that while the stylis graffiti is easy to work with, and very accurate, I can take notes faster on paper. Other than not being able to take notes at a reasonable speed in class, it does everything I want it to. The operating system took me about 10 minutes to master (I had no prior experiance with the Palm). Syncronizing with my computer is easy-there's only 1 button on the Hot Sync cradle and it takes an average of 15 seconds to syncronize via serial port, unless I'm installing applications, which there are a ton of free ones on the web. I wouldn't bother with the USB connection kit unless you don't have a serial port. This Palm IIIxe features everything the IIIc does, except a color screen and a built in rechargeble battery. The Vx is the same as the IIIxe, except thinner, a rechargeble battery, and more expensive. The VII has a modem, which you can buy seperatly for the IIIxe. Unless you want a color screen, don't bother with the other Palms. Get this one.
Rating: Summary: Unfortunate circumstance Review: Had to replace the batteries twice in less than four weeks. Contacted Palm by e-mail twice regarding the problem and they weren't helpful at all. Had to call customer service on my dime. Two choices were offered: Return the product and receive a re-conditioned model with a 90-day warranty. Or, return my model to be repaired, in which case I'll be without it for 2-3 weeks. Needless to say I won't be buying anything from Palm in the future.
Rating: Summary: Great and easy to use! Review: I have owned this PALM for about a month and it is very easy to use and very helpful. The computer software that comes with it is great and a must for the sales person or busy exec. that needs organization (me) You won't go wrong buying this PALM and for the price it is a steal!
Rating: Summary: My Palm replaced my DayRunner Review: I bought the Palm IIIxe about a month ago, and it has now completely replaced my old paper planner system. I sync it with Outlook at work every morning and before I leave at night. I like my Palm because it carries all of my contact addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses; my appointments; my email; and my task list/priorities. It is so small that I can always carry it with me and have access to phone numbers and other information. It works very well. Battery life is no problem. Writing in messages using the graffiti or the keypad is easy. It was well worth the investment.
Rating: Summary: My first Palm device Review: I was a little "iffy" about laying down so much money for an organizer, but oh my lord was it worth it! One word sums up the Palm IIIxe: "Wow!" It is incredibly simple to use, has powerful handwriting recognition, and has a boat-load of memory for third-party applications. I'm a college student, so organization is very important to me...now I'm addicted to this thing. I have all my appointments, contacts, and to-do's in a nice lightweight package. This is a great buy for anyone out there who's debating about buying a Palm. I debated for a while...but I'm glad I gave in. I recommend installing the AvantGO software if you'd like to take the daily news wherever you go, and the maps from mapopolis.com are a nifty utility. That's it for my take...hope this helps!
Rating: Summary: Doesn't even Work Review: My Palm III Xe just arrived. Won't start up. Tried switching batteries, went through the "start here guide" and the troubleshooting guide. Nothing worked. Nothing worse than waiting for something and getting it broken.
Rating: Summary: Great Little Organizer Review: Franklin-Covey has decided not to print a variety of planner pages, and is effectively forcing everyone to go handheld; so, seemingly without a choice I was reluctant to switch. I was also an old Sharp Wizard Daytimer Organizer. For those of you who remember, it had 256 KB of space and also had synchronization software for your PC. I loved that organizer. The only complaint I had was that it was sometimes difficult to enter info on the keyboard quickly, and I had a lesser memory unit before that was not durable. I have to admit that after ordering the Palm IIIxe on a whim, I have been most pleasantly surprised. I was concerned about learning how to write on the screen. The graffiti was not at all difficult to figure out. Within 3 minutes I had it down pat. I love synchronizing my email. Now, I can just read it on the go rather than sit down and take 30 minutes in the morning before leaving for work. This alone saves me a tremendous amount of organizational headache. I just can't say enough about the Hotsync feature. My only complaint is the lighting on the screen, it's just simply not as well lit, even with the backlight as my old Wizard. I've also heard others complain about their screens. For the reason that the font is so small, I can't get see getting one of these for anyone who has any vision problems. I'm looking forward to getting to know my new organizational buddy. I really hate to quit using my Wizard, but the Palm is just so convenient and advanced........I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to transition to PDAs.
Rating: Summary: Lop off 2 stars for poor quality control Review: The Palm iii xe is one heck of a PDA. When it works.I ordered from Staples. My first try [in a sealed box] the cradle would not work. I contemplated calling customer support. After 20 minutes on hold I gave up and decided to call the staples 800 number instead. Within 24 hours I had a new Palm iii xe in my hands.I think Palm should pay more attention to its quality control procedures. They must realize they are not the only game in town. That much said, I love the device, now that it is fully functional. It gives me all of a Palm Vx's functionality at a fraction of the price. The 8MB memory is excellent for AvantGo and a few books.
Rating: Summary: Customer Support is a disaster Review: If you do not have a problem with your equipment you might have a good experience with it, other wise you will regret buying this product. When I upgraded my computer and tried to install the cradle and the hotsync program, the computer did not even booth, it just went dead. After 25 minutes of a long distance phone call to Palm support service (no toll free number), they told me the problem was the port, so they could not solve it - the port was working. I wrote an e-mail explaining the problem, the answer two days later was I did not give enough information as I did not tell what hotsync program I installed in my computer - NONE!!!, they clearly did not even bother to read the nature of the problem. They saw a missing field and they just assumed they could not help. Eventually, after the level of complaints Palm received on the issue was large enough, they informed via the website that some cradles are defective and they need to be replaced; however, the part cannot be ordered via web or e-mail, support had to be called. Another 40 minute long distance call, and I was informed that in 48 hours the cradle adaptor will be in my house. After 10 days without adaptor, I sent an e-mail to support asking for it, giving it the service order number. The answer was to call parts, an 800 number, only 15 minutes of my time were wasted before I was informed I needed to call support, as parts had nothing to do with it. Another 20 minutes of long distance to order again the part, as the service representative made a mistake in the previous order, so it could not be processed. When I asked for the order number they informed me that their database is down and they are just filling orders by hand and they could not give me a confirmation number. Good luck if you still decide to buy this.
Rating: Summary: A Great Buy-- Palm IIIxe has everything you need & more Review: I bought the Palm IIIxe for my dad last Christmas, and it's definitely the best gift I could have given him. Before, he was a mess- Post it notes everywhere, scribbled notes on the back of envelopes, and overflowing address books. Now everything is inside his Palm Pilot-- it can hold thousands of addresses and memo notes, and it's easy to transfer data from your PC into your Palm with the included Hot Sync Cradle. The 8 MB is more than anyone could ever need, especially if it's only for every day use. It's easy to download games, maps, books and other software into your Palm from their website, and after many downloads, my dad still has plenty of room. The hard plastic case is also very durable, though I would recommend buying a carrying case for safety. And the stylus that comes with it is pretty flimsy, so I'd also recommmend adding another stylus to your purchase. If you want internet & e-mail, you can buy the Palm OS add-on and you'll be hooked up in no time. Now that Amazon.com has reduced the price, the Palm IIIxe is even more of a great deal... and the only difference between the new Palm Vx and the Palm IIIxe is that the Palm Vx is thinner and it's silver. The Palm IIIxe has everything the Vx does, at a much lower price. It's simple, reliable, has tons of space... and it's perfect for anyone who wants to get organized, fast. Two Thumbs Up!
