Summary: Great Electronic Assistant!
Review: With less and less time to remember dates, times, and special occasions, the Palm Vx is a handy gadget. Has a whopping 8 MB of memory, which should be sufficient even with a ton of games ;) Forgetting names, numbers, and addresses will be a fad of the past. There are tons of applications on the internet that you can download and use, which help save time and make this already handy tool even more useful. You can also 'beam' files and your business card to other PDA users as well as laptop users via the Fast Infared Port which allows for wireless transfers. Great buy!

Summary: Palm Vx Handheld

Summary: Still in love with my Vx!!
Review: I thought it would be helpful to make another review 8 months after using my Vx instead of a few days just to give a more objective perspective on the utility of the device once the novelty and the excitement of a new toy has passed away.

Hardware: After 6 months, i would have figured that Palm or Handspring or even Sony would have come out with a PDA that could rival the Vx's elegance and style. Unfortunately (or Fortunately, depending on where you're standing) none has come close. Another pleasant surprise is the durability of my Vx. Although i can't speak for all Vx's out there, mine has survived quite horrific spills.

There are few hardware hitches with the Vx but nothing that i would take away anything from its obvious beauty and durability. There is one other issue that i must address. Initially i thought having a built in rechargeable lithium battery instead of the AAA batteries would be a clear advantage. However i have discovered that its not the case. For the Vx to be that thin it had to adopt rechargeable lithium batteries. Although one might think that a rechargeable battery is better than AAA, you better be prepared to charge your palm at least every three days.

Software: No matter what the PocketPC boasts of its capabilities, if it lacks third party application support, then how useful can it really be? Similar to Windows CE or even the other PDA operating systems, the Pocket PC could die a slow and painful death because of this lack of support. This is the real strength of the Palm OS. 8 months ago there were thousands of third party applications with hundreds more being added monthly.

Unfortunately because of this flood of applications, some applications may have unknown effects on our units. Although many result to a soft resets, there are instances when a hard reset (complete data loss) is required to fix the problem. Sometimes there are instances when certain applications won't work with the presence of others. Again these are unusual circumstances and it certainly wouldn't deter me from getting a PALM OS unit again.

Overall I guess by know you've guessed that im still in love with my Vx. I have many applications on my Palm but my personal favorites are; for regular applications there are Fireviewer and AvantGo and Documents to Go, for Games there are Dope Wars v 2.3, IRBattleship, PacMan, SpaceTrader, and Yahdice and for Utility programs there is Atools, Benchmark, Hackmaster and Cruise.

In terms of accessories I recommend getting the Palm hardcase. Check out my review on this product. There are hardier cases out there like Rhinoskins and Concept Kitchens, but this one is my favorite

Speaking of Concept Kitchen, i also recommend using their WriteRight product. Its a protective film that goes over the screen. Not only does it protect your palm screen from scratches and reduces glare, it has a pen to paper feel when using a stylus. Speaking of stylus, you can just forget about the stock stylus of the Palm. Its [...]! If you want to get carpal tunnel in 5 minutes go for it. Otherwise i recommend using another instrument. I recommend using those multi-pens that have a stylus, pen and pencil in one. There are many great pens out there that have already incorporated styli in their line. Cross makes one the is pen on one side and a stylus on the other. Pilot makes some nice ones, Lamy and Rotring makes them too. I personally use the Rotring matte black trio-pen. Its a converted pen so i had to buy a stylus refill and replaced the red pen option with the stylus.

Unfortunately it hasn't been a completely smooth 6 months. Just recently i had a strange experience of my address book being completely wiped out! It existed on my desktop but it wouldnt sync to my palm. After a little reinstallation of the desktop application and consultation with the palm technical support, i was able to fix the problem. Which brings me to the point of hotsyncing. It is CRITICAL that you hotsync. I must say that although it is not necessary to running your palm, a computer is essential to back up files and to install programs. Get backup buddy as well. that works really well. HOTSYNC, HOTSYNC, HOTSYNC!!

The Vx is a good investment. With the m500 and m505 soon to come out, that should decrease its price considerably. Although I'd be inclined to recommend the m505, the [VX's price] is a steal!

Last thing, before you go and buy your PDA i strongly recommend you do your research. I cant stress it enough. Read what people have to say about their experiences and thoughts about their units. Consumers are the best sources of objective reviews.

Good Luck people and more power to PALM.

Summary: My PalmVx seems like it was made for my Mac!
Review: I recently purchased a Palm Vx, my first foray into handhelds. It was extremely easy to learn to use, and the software seems very logical... so far there haven't been any "oh, I wish it would..." and I have yet to consult the documentation, it's so straight-forward. Best of all, it's as though it was made for my Mac, instead of made for a PC and then translated. No more stray pieces of paper and thick datebooks for me. I also have 3 technical books loaded on it that I refer to several times each day at work.

Summary: Worried about having too many things in your pockets?
Review: Worried about having too many things in your pockets?

If you're like me, you like the things you've heard about Palms keeping all your info together, but you're not sure you want to carry another thing in your pockets. Instead of carrying another thing, you may want a Palm that is thin enough to carry as a part of your wallet. And it does - the Palm vx fits in a wallet! The Palm vx is the first* palm that is small enough to fit in a wallet (sold by franklin covey).

More Info: The original Palms are good, and I even owned one of those original bulkier older models, but i never used it. Why? I didn't take it with me everywhere - if you're like me, you like to keep your pockets relatively "non-bulkified".

So, when i got the palm vx, i decided i'd replace my wallet to get a wallet that could hold cash, credit cards, AND the palm vx, while still being thin enough to fit in my back pocket. I found a wallet that could do that and that's made all the difference compared to my first Palm.

Not just any wallet will do. I tried a couple wallet models and the one i really liked is sold by franklin covey. They have it listed as "Wallet Case" and you can get there by clicking the links "Electronic Planning", then "Handheld Binder and Cases", then "Palm Handheld Cases". Note performing a text search for "Wallet Case" does not work...

This wallet is nice looking (I've gotten numerous compliments on it) and with the Palm vx, it is just slightly taller than my former overstuffed wallet. I find it to be very comfortable in my pants pockets.

So, if you want a palm, but don't want the pain of carrying another thing in your pocket, do what I did and 1) buy the palm vx and 2) replace your wallet with a 'palm v' wallet that holds your palm vx AND your money, credit cards, drivers license, etc...

* The palm 'v', not the 'vx', is actually the first one small enough to fit in a wallet, but the v only has 2mb of memory (vs. the vx 8mb) and i recommend the 8mb. Also, the advice I've given you probably also applies for the m500 and m505 versions, although I haven't tested those versions with the wallet (but they are approximately the same thickness).

Email me with any questions!

Summary: Great PDA
Review: Slim case is wonderful. Very easy to use, intuitive interface. Definitely view the graffiti tips if you're going to use the handwriting recognition features instead of the keyboard entry. I think I may be tempted by the new m505, though, if I didn't already own the Vx.

Also, lots of freeware, shareware and licensed software available out there to add new applications. I've loaded it with many applications (a shopping list, a few more games including infrared to play against another Palm owner, a full screen clock, and even a remote program that can replace my TV remote).

Summary: Slim sexy design, best electronic you can bring with you.
Review: I bought my palm IIIxe before this, and had always complained about the size. It works great and all but I just want to have a little machine that I don't even feel it when I carry it around.

Now Palm Vx does exactly that. It's slim sexy design is well worth the money. Rechargable internal battery means you don't have to worry about changing batteries every month or so and can feel free to use the backlight. :)

As for functions, It's basically the same as all Palm III series. 8 MB of ram, Palm OS 3.5, things like that. You'd probably be using the normal functions like calendar, phone book, notepad, task list more often. for me I use it to read chinese books and have a list of important emails backed up on my palm.

Summary: Showing Its Age
Review: I bought a Palm Vx about six months ago, as my first PDA. It was a good starter because the os is easy to learn. However, even a cursory glance at the other offerings here on Amazon shows that this platform is aging rapidly. The Palm Vx does not have a color screen (thank goodness, the rechargeable battery would be even more short-lived otherwise), only has 8 mb memory and would be relatively underpowered from a processing standpoint if it was designed to do anything challenging.

This is a pda made to basically do your calendar, address book and task list. If that is all you want it does an pretty good job and is simple to use. It is an alternative to a paper organizer (more fragile though), and synchronizes to a pc easily. My main complaint is that the battery drains too quickly. While the battery lasts, you can play chess and other games with it and read e-books on its eye-numbing low contrast lcd screen if you want. There are lots of programs for it available at various websites. I bought the optional fully size collapsable Palm keyboard that goes with it, which is really a good product. However, I have not found a truly adequate word processing solution. I am probably very slightly better off for owning it than just using a good paper organizer, but there are certainly trade-offs.

This is not a product in the same category, or level of technology, as the Compaq or HP pdas I've been looking at recently. It is not even fair to compare it with those, except that its price is almost as high. I suspect the Windows machines are as simple to use as the Palm for basic orgainzer functions (calendar, address books, etc.) and only more complicated where there is additional software or functionality unavailable at all on the Palm.

It is clear that pda technology is moving rapidly toward....something (your guess is as good as mine). But, in 5-10 years I bet that something will include a cell phone, color screen, mp3 or other platform for music, voice recognition, quality dictation/word processing capability, maybe even cameras or global positioning systems, and probably other things that somebody will think up as technolgy becomes available, like picture-telephones or electronic credit cards.

Rather than being stuck with a $350 address book, I would suggest experiencing the new technolgy, from time to time, as it comes out (think of the lucky people who were proficient with a pc in, say, 1983). The feature on Amazon that lets you compare products is particularly useful in shopping for a pda. Not to harp on this, but read the battery life claims carefully.

Summary: great for mutli-taskers (check out an Audrey, too)
Review: All these great techy reviews. The reality is Palm is the gold standard and the Visor is carving out some features to deliver at their pricepoint. My whole family and most of my employees and clients are using these. Beaming information is essential. I've got my work schedule, my kids' schedule, everything, just as I stand there making an appointment for any of us. When I go home, I sync to our Audrey and I can keep my phone numbers and my husband's info right there without diving for my briefcase all night. My Palm V broke after years of service and rather than use Palm's $100 trade-in for a rebuilt Palm V (great after-purchase service, by the way), I decided to go for broke and get the Vx. Try living without your Palm after you've had one for a while--it's brutal. I'm living proof that the Palm is the only way to manage a family of four, with two careers, umpteen activities, season theatre tickets, and lots of friends. It's a mistake to think this is just a businessperson's tool, it's great for moms still driving kids everywhere, that's the biggest risk of double-booking in my life. Also, the rechargeable batteries are VERY important, I had a pre-Palm V, the AAA batteries are a pain.

Summary: I would be lost without my Palm!
Review: I was never able to organize my life until I bought a Palm Vx. It is the only thing that allows me to juggle a irregular schedule, todo's, phone numbers and a slew of Word documents. The best feature about the Palm series is the HUGE number of third party software that is out there. There are at least 8,000 different programs created for the palm OS that can be downloaded straight off the net. This is a must have for any one who always finds themselves on the go and without a reliable system of organization. Of course the number of games on the Palm doesnt hurt either.
