Summary: A great PDA
Review: Recently, I went to a store and compared the Palm Vx and the Palm m500. It seemed that the Palm Vx was of higher quality than the m500--it seemed more substantial. The plastic parts on the m500 seemed cheaper and flimsy. So, because both come with 8mb of memory, I bought the Vx... Sure, the m500 is expandable, but who really needs more than 8mb? Plus, since the m500 is out, you can now get the Vx and related accessories for great prices.

Summary: Great alone, good w/ Franklin
Review: I've had my palm 4 months now, & I love it, but there are some missing elements. I Use 'Listmaker' for projects, agendas, and general lists. That works wonderfully but it doesn't have a desktop application, so it's complicated to print. It has to be copied into 'memo' first. I've gone to the Franklin system for Palm for 2 reasons. One, it gives me a DAILY to-do list in addition to my MASTER task list. The second is that I can list my tasks A1, A2, A3... and B1, B2... to at least 50. That helps me know the next action item at any given moment throughout the day and it's easy to reprioritize the list quickly. I'm interested to know if anyone else is using Franklin on their Palm and whether or not they like it or have had problems with it.

Summary: An extraordinarily useful device!
Review: I bought my Vx with some mild trepidation that I was wasting my money. I couldn't have been more mistaken, as it has doubled my productivity overnight, earned me a promotion, and allowed me to schedule my commitments much more effeciently. And that was before I loaded Docs to Go and Project@Hand for linking with Word and Excel and Microsoft Project for running my projects from wherever I am at the time. Just having the jobs list and calendar always at hand made an extraordinary difference. Now I can examine and edit project work on the fly, on a bus, up a ladder, in a plane, wherever and whenever, and then hotsync to produce a presentable document, create job sheets and expense accounts etc, at my convenience. For personal use I have not one but two entire Bibles which, with the search routines, make it a very powerful tool for Bible study anywhere and anytime. And there was still room for the Noah Lite dictionary. It is remarkably reliable and has never hicupped. The battery charge lasts at least a week to 10 days with normal use, so I virtually never have to think about it. I am glad I didn't buy a battery model. After seeing two PalmIII's destroyed on account of damage to their screens, one scratched and one smashed, I would strongly recommend using the protective screens and the leather wallet style cover. My only complaint is that the power button is too easily switched on for a device that gets carried around in trouser pockets.

Summary: A comment on hot-synching
Review: I have owned both a Palm Vx and IIIc (my current model) and they are great products. Although I have had my IIIc for almost a year, and my Vx for 6 months before that, I am still just as amazed at how useful it is as when I first bought it. These devices are not toys. They will help you organize you life in a way you would never had thought possible, and I am still thinking of new ways to use all the time. I just noticed something interesing about my Palm and thought I'd mention it here. A minute ago I put my Palm in its cradle to do a hot sync. I pushed the button but nothing happened. I tried it again but again nothing.

Then I noticed there was a reminder notice on the screen. I cleared it by tapping the "Okay" button, and after that I was able to hot sync.

Apparently the Palm OS considers a reminder notice to be at a lower interrupt level than a hot sync, which, if you think about it, is probably true, since you wouldn't want to miss a reminder notice because it got blown away by the hot sync screen.

Just one more thing that shows how well-made and thought out these little gadgets are.

One other thing. I also have a Compaq iPAQ, which I also have become very attached to, in addition to my Palm. Although the iPAQ hot sync process is a little easier than the Palm (you just put it in the cradle and the unit is automatically detected, you don't have to hit a button as with the Palm), the Palm does have one advantage here. I can hot sync when I'm dialed in and on-line with the modem in use. The iPAQ uses a USB port, which looks for a free COM port to work with, and this conflicts with the modem. When I try to hot sync while using the modem, I get a message that there is a conflict and it won't hot sync. This is despite the fact that my system has two COM ports and the Microsoft Windows diagnostics shows the second COM port as free and not in use.

However, one interesting thing the iPAQ does is you can work with it while it is hot synching. You still can't do that for the Palms.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I bought the Palm Vx about 15 months ago, and since then I have lost the screen constantly and kept having to digitize. However, the screen has now gone so far off the top that I can not get to the digitizer menu. I am now stuck with this situation and cannot enter any new data, or access certain menus. I am very disappointed, with the Palm, and it is also too heavy and too big to carry around with you.

Summary: Fantastic product...
Review: What can I say? The Palm Vx, for the money, is the best PDA you can buy. It syncs FLAWLESSLY with my work Win2K laptop and my home desktop Mac. Its reliable, the battery life is fantastic, and with 8MB of RAM, I find it MORE THAN ENOUGH for all my games, books and apps!

My suggestion, skip the Palm 500 and save yourself $....the Palm Vx is everything the Palm 500 is and maybe even more! Who needs the Secure expansion slot anyway?

Summary: My wife is a Realtor
Review: I bought this for her for Mother's day and she absolutely loves it. She's not so computer savy so we learned to use it together. In about a couple of hours she was transitioning her data from her old daytimer to the "New" Palm. She and I both are surprised at how easy to use and functional this guy really is. I recommend it to anyone who uses a daytimer or other such planner.

Summary: Buy this handheld
Review: The Palm Vx is a wonderful handheld. Hands down the Palm Vx will perform most daily tasks. From the address book to the memo pad the Palm Vx is the best value handheld on the market. It comes with 8MB of RAM although it is not expandable. The Palm Vx will hold tons of programs and downloads from the web. It connects to your PC using a USB port so hot syncing is a breeze. Take it from me if your only going to buy one handheld and color is not important then buy the Palm Vx.
