Rating: Summary: Why does this thing get good reviews? Review: I have used a family members Vx extensively and compared it to my Clie S-320, and cannot find anything redeemable about this model. Moreover, the stylus slot is very easy to slip out with little to any contact, and this was not caused by overuse. I understand it is a few years old (at least since the original V), and it is very thin, but other then that, there is not much to this. The backlight is very straining on the eyes, and makes the cool indiglo color of the Clie look heavenly. The screen is not very sharp, but it is slightly larger then the S-320 which is a plus. No expansion slots, and (...) it is hard to recommend such a product thats 8mb will be used and you'll be left wanting something with an expansion slot, like an m500 series or any Clie model. This appears to be a last ditch attempt to make money off of an inferior product. And I am glad the family member that has this was issued it at work and does not own it. Get a cheaper S-320 with more features, or higher end Sony model, or a Palm m500 instead.
Rating: Summary: Great help from Palm Review: When my Palm III died recently I evaluated all the PDA's out there. I decided on Clie and was partly swayed by the high Consumer Report rating. However, I was not able to transfer the data in my Palm desktop software to the Clie! Sony said I couldn't have two versions of the Palm OS on my desktop, so I would have to remove my old Palm OS before putting in Sony's Palm OS. If I did that, my data would be gone. I asked them if I could transfer my user file to the desktop and then cut and paste the info that way. No, I was told, the new software would not be able to read the files. The only way to get info from another model PDA is to have a working PDA that contains the data, then synch that with the Sony software (they didn't explain how to do that, though). I didn't have a working Palm, so I couldn't do it anyway. My solution, I called Palm tech support and they gave me an upgrade code to use so I could buy a Palm Vx through their web site for .... The hard case was 20% lower than other sites, too. There is no software compatibility issue, and now I am back in business. If you have a Palm you want to upgrade from and don't intend to,or can't use it anymore, definitely call the Palm tech support phone number and ask them what promotions they're running, you may be able to get that super model you want and save a bundle!
Rating: Summary: my palm vx Review: The palm vx is the best thing ever!!!! There is endless uses for it and not to mention the ultra sleek and thin case, in which it attracts alot of attention with friends. Im a freshman in high school and i found it to be really useful in keeping track of my assignments, help to do my math, and keep me up to date with up-to-date new (and its also fun to play a game or two during class =) ) At first i was prolly like some of you. You want one, but you dont think that you would have much use for it and your kinda skeptical. Now I would be totally lost without it. In conclusion, the palm vx is the best thing that i have come across. It's the best invention since the flushable toilet. I believe that everyone should have a palm. GET A PALM VX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (screen protectors are also nice to have)
Rating: Summary: Best of the rest Review: Rechargeable. 8 MB. Always-on when it's standing in the cradle. Quick app-loading. Lives up to everything you've read and then some. And it is LIGHT...barely noticeable in your shirt pocket. On the down side, the apps it comes with are SPARSE. At the very least, you will need to go out and get AvantGo, Scrabble, and MyBible. Then, you'll need to get either a free Teal-Doc reader or the more robust (pay to play) Documents to Go for anything else you want to read or keep with you. After that, let it organize your life. If nothing else, keep a PRIVATE memo for all your internet passwords. Don't forget the password for that memo! And don't forget to HotSync at least once a week. Actually, that's about how long it'll go without charging if you leave the sound on. If you cannot wait for the i705, then either the VX or the m505 is what you want. Considering their excellent resale on Amazon-used or eBay, not a bad thing to try out even if you're unsure.
Rating: Summary: It Changed How I Do My Job Review: This is a truly tremendous -- but not perfect -- product. I have become much more independent and productive on my job because of it. It stores way more information that I can put in it. (After 18 months, 500 contacts and loads of internet downloads, memory is only 20 percent full.) It is lightning quick -- pulling information up at a moment's notice. It is easy to operate -- learning to use the Graffiti alphabet system is simple. It is even handy: it fits in a pocket, it allows me to "beam" information to other Palm users, there are web services that allow me to down load news, sports, etc., so that I can read my Palm when I'm stuck on the bus, waiting in a line, etc. On the downside: the screen can be hard to read in middle-level light conditions or where there is too much light and reflection is a problem. Also, the screen scratches easily, but that can be solved with a disposable sheet you can attach to the screen. And it has a back-light function, which is really only helpful when you're in complete darkness. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Still The Best Review: I have had several Palm units, starting back with my US Robotics Palm Pilot Professional, but the Vx is far and away the best. Since I bought mine ... I have acquired both a Palm VIIx and a Compaq iPaq, but neither of these units can get me to stop using my Vx. The memory is enough for what I need and also several games and many AvantGo channels. The OS is much more stable than my old Palm Pro, the thing has crashed on me twice in the last year but both times the memory has been intact when I hit the reset button, not even requiring a re-sync. You cannot beat the size - at least not if you travel as much as I do. Two negative comments for PC users (I use both Macs and PCs). It was much more convenient for me when I sync-ed to my Mac as my primary machine. First of all, the serial hot sync cradle is a pain and hangs Windows if I have the thing plugged in when I boot up. Curiously it works fine if I plug it in once the machine is up. This is a Known issue, and a real pain. I don't want to spend $... for a USB adapter. Secondly, and for me more importantly - Palm desktop software is much better on the Mac. The PC version forces you to give up certain niceties of display and once necessity (for me) - color coded categories in the calendar view. This is totally lame, as far as I'm concerned. If you have an option - sync to Outlook or use a Mac. But the Vx rocks. I won't be switching for a long time.
Rating: Summary: Great tool for buisness Review: No matter what anybody says bad about these there all wrong. This is the best palm on the market.
Rating: Summary: A classic... Review: After using a Handspring, but going through batteries too quickly, I decided to upgrade to this timeless PDA. I have no complaints with it other than the serial sync is a lot slower than the USB sync. I love the built-in battery, metal case, and slim size. I fit this in my pocket and it is a lot lighter than my wallet ;) Now that the m500 discounts have hit, the Vx is coming down to very attractive prices....
Rating: Summary: Still the standard. Take advantage of the coming price cuts! Review: Due to bumbling on the part of Palm, the Palm Vx is still the standard in small, easy to use, full-functioning PDAs. Sporting a full-size screen (compared to the puny screens on the m100, m105 and m125) and a lithium rechargeable battery, the Palm Vx remains the sleekest, lightest PDA on the market. It fits easily into your hand or your shirt pocket. Now that its price appears to be coming down, it is a great buy, especially compared to the overpriced m125. Palm's newest high-end models, the m500 and m505, are a bit better than the Vx, mainly because of a new card slot and a slightly more tactile feel. The m505 also offers some rather anemic color. But Palm's software hasn't really improved much since the Palm Vx came out, IMHO, and the expansion slot is not so compelling to me that it would be worth paying the additional dough. Also, as an aside, make sure that you download three free add-ons for Palm OS: Avantgo, a service that downloads articles from the New York Times, Sports Illustrated, CNN and others every time you sync your Palm; Vindigo, a city guide with restaurant and movie reviews; and Mapopolis, which has street maps that are keyword searchable. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Great Little PDA Review: I have owned my Vx since Palm introduced it. It has served me very well and has never given me any problems. I have owned other PDA's (Phillips Nino, a Casio, and a HP), which I had numerous software problems with (constant resets, freezes, information drop-outs etc.....) First things first. The Vx is a handheld for people who want to organize their schedules, keep track of phone numbers, check out your emails, and other type of functions for which PDA's were originally designed for. It is not a Phone, MP3 player, Digital Camera, GPS receiver, etc. And while you can get attachments for the Vx to do some of these things, these functionalities were not its original purpose. For the things most people want in a PDA, the Vx kicks butt. Yeah the Handspring is [less expensive], but it doesn't have the small size nor is it as attractive of a PDA. And yes, the color handheld screens are nice but why fork over the extra bucks just to see your calendar in color. I have never had any problems seeing my screen. The hot-sync for the Vx is simple and works without glitches. Also the software is easy to use. My only regret is I bought mine years ago when the price was [higher]. But I don't have that regret for long because when I see my colleages with their bulky IPAQ's and HP's constantly complaining about one thing or another concerning their toys I remember mine just keeps on working, doing what I need it to do, when I need it to do it-no problems! At it's current price it's a [bargain]!!!!
