Rating: Summary: Amazing! Review: I bought this originally to try to get my school work in order. I have always had trouble keeping track of what and how much I have to do. The Palm Vx has made all of the difference. The Palm Vx allows me to put all of my assignments into the to do list and set a daily alarm that reminds me to check the list and the assignments that are due. I originally decided on the V series because it seemed like it would be more of a "road warrior" type of device. It is. I have had no trouble with it whatsoever as far as minor jars or bumbs go. It is small enough to fit in a pocket easily without being uncomfortable and its size also allows you to jot down memos with relitive ease while you are walking (just don't forget to look up every once in a while). I found that the graffiti writing system is absolutely amazing. I have now abandoned pencil and paper completely for notes as I use a memo and the graffiti and I can take notes just as fast, if not faster. For diagrams and things of the sort, you can download a diddle program that allows you to sketch nearly anything. After having this for a couple months, I see no real design flaws and the advantages of it are nearly endless. If you have the extra money, ignore the handsprings (they crash) and get one of these!
Rating: Summary: A Life Saver Review: I bought my Palm VX after trying many ways to organize my busy life. I looked at the Hp 430se, the Palm IIIx, and the Palm V, and this was head and shoulders above the rest. The 8 meg memory combined with an efficent OS and one of the clearest screens around make this little device one of the most versitile going. The HP's batteries have a life of about 1/10 that of the Vx and it's just bulkey. The Vx is light and goes forever before needing a charge-up. This comes from the nature of the super smart palm OS which only runs the machine when necessary, unlike the in-efficent Windows CE. CE is pretty to look at, but all-in-all nothing compared to the Palm series, this being the best of all of them.
Rating: Summary: Great Software, some flaws in organiser design Review: This is a great product. The software is logical, simple and extremely useful. The hardware is sleek ,light but it does have some design flaws. The unit is not very robust. Mine fell out of my jacket while I was sitting down. The unit fell about three feet and the screen shattered. Perhaps I was unlucky and it fell badly (and Palm did send me a refurbished unit for $100.) Fact is anything that you carry everyday is going to drop from time to time( my nokia cell phone is really robust for"~ example) so lets hope this one lasts. however, this is a wonderful product - probably the best on the market.
Rating: Summary: Less for more Review: I have reviewed the Vx vs the Handspring Visor Deluxe and have seen them both in operation. Sure the Handspring is a little larger, BUT the $200 price difference is better! Handspring also has a toll free number for support.Plus the upcoming products that will be available show that they are looking at the future! 3Com, look over your shoulder, there IS competition!
Rating: Summary: Couldn't be more satisfied Review: I bought my Palm Vx almost a month ago. In that time, I've come to depend on it to manage my day to day life. I've always had problems remembering appointments, and now my Palm Vx reminds me of everything that I used to forget. The Palm Vx itself is very light and very small (it fits easily in my hand, but I have big hands). The screen is crystal clear and crisp. It is really easy to see the screen even in less than optimal lighting. The backlight is also easy to read in very little light or in no light at all. In all other conditions, if the screen is too hard to read normally, I've found that holding the screen at a slightly different angle helped, depending on the lighting. Battery life is stated at about a month. I think that is battery life if you don't use it at all. I usually end up using my Palm about an hour or two a day, and at that rate, a full charge will last for about 7-8 days before the battery needs to recharge. For most people, this won't be a problem, since putting the Palm into the sync cradle charges the battery. If you charge it everyday, it will only take 5-10 minutes, but if you charge once a week like I do, it will take an hour or two. Overall, I am very happy with my Palm Vx and wouldn't trade it in for a Windows CE device even if someone paid me. It only took an hour or two to become proficient in Graffitti, and all of the included applications are extremely easy and intuitive. I would have to give this three thumbs up.
Rating: Summary: Love my Palm Vx Review: About a month ago, I started looking at Palms and was undecided as to whether I should get the beefier IIIx or the elegant V (the Windows CE handhelds were not even in the running). The Palm V was going to be the winner because of the sleek looks. When I went in to purchase the Palm V, lo and behold, they had the Palm Vx for sale also. I special ordered it and had to wait about 10 days for it, but it was worth the wait. Please don't be jealous, I got it for $375 including tax. I've had the Palm Vx for about a couple weeks now and I don't know how I did without it. I know everyone says that, but it is so handy. It's light and compact so I can carry it with me and I always know what I need to do that day. The 8 mb Ram is invaluable. I've already used over 3 mb. I've loaded books, some games, algebraic calculators, German translators, Pocket Quicken, and a whole lot more. $449 might be steep for most, but for the peace of mind in knowing that this PDA will be useful for AT LEAST 4-5 years, (you can't say that about computers now) you really can't beat it. I know I PROBABLY won't need any more RAM, the looks of this machine is very elegant, it fits comfortably in my hand (I'm female), and you get that "OOOOh, cool" look also, at least that's what my boyfriend said when he took his to work. Yeah, once he found out I was getting one, he had to have one also, said something about boys and their toys, and he showed his friends at work his new toy, of course. Anyways, if you have the money, get one. It's got the wow factor, it's light, compact, comfortable, easy to use, and you will use it because it IS easy to use and carry. The screen is very clear also. The words are easy to read. People complain about the new backlight, but there is a shortcut to change it to the way the old backlights used to light up. There are numerous sites on the internet for free and low-cost software. Make sure you get another case though, the case that comes with it is disappointing, it isn't very protective. It's one-sided and only protects the screen, so I bought the slim case from Palm. It's nice and fits in my back pocket comfortably, but I'm going to get the molded aluminum one from Rhinoskin. I need to have full protection because of my job environment. Other than that, you can get started immediately with what's in the box. Another helpful thing to get is the book by David Pogue called Palm Pilot: The Ultimate Guide. It's not necessary, but it's handy because of the shortcuts and insightful way Pogue has of breaking things down that the manual Palm includes with the Vx just doesn't have. He writes about that backlight fix also. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: 100% Satisfied Review: Spend some time researching these devices before you buy one... I looked at the comments on Amazon.com as well as on various internet news groups. I also tried out my friends' palm III's and V's. The Vx is probably the best-available PDA out there. Obviously, it doesn't take the place of a full-fledged PC -- that was never the designer's intent. I'm saving up for a laptop as well; the handheld CE machines I checked out (including Casio and HP machines) were ridiculously cumbersome to use.
Rating: Summary: Fix the "Self Power-On" Problem Review: If you carry your Palm V or Vx in a purse or briefcase, then buying the hard cover is your best bet. If you carry it in your jacket, though, this is a tip a friend gave me to FIX THE TOP flap so that the PDA doesn't turn on, without adding any additional volume or weight to your palm. Here's what to do: 1) take the flap off the Palm 2) place a pen, pencil, or similar object on a table. 3) Slightly bend the flap over the pencil in the lower center, where the scrolling buttons would be located. 4) slightly bend the flap over the pencil where the power button would be located. It worked for me, hope it works for you!
Rating: Summary: Don't look further Review: All the possibilities are described above, so I won't repeat them. I'll tell you just my feelings on this pretty little thing called Palm. From the moment I first held (someone else's-) Palm V in my hand I was sold. Love at first sight is the proper terminology. Basically that's the first aspect I love about it. The shape and weight of this little device. Furthermore I chose this over for example keyboard based PDA's (like Psion etc) because I can make entries without having to make room on a desk, if there is one available that is. The handwriting recognition works well, and the user interface is very well thought out. Even a chaotic like myself can easily find anything on this machine, and it's fun to sort you r programs adresses etc. Just ask someone you know if you can just hold it and you'll soon find yourself about 400 USD lighter...
Rating: Summary: How did I ever live without one? Review: When my wife insisted that I make a Christmas wish list for her, I took one look at the big, bulky Franklin Planner that I had carried with me for years, and decided that I would go all out and ask for a Palm Vx. Well, lo and behold, Santa put one under the tree for me. And now I wonder how I ever lived without one. My Palm Vx does everything I need it to do, and then some. First of all, I never have to update my to do list every day, like I used to with my paper planner. My address book is right there, just in case I need to come up with a phone number or an email address. I can keep my calendar with me, and sync it with the great Palm Desktop software that comes with it. I can write notes in it during meetings, keep track of my expenses while I am on the road, and many other things. I can even relive my childhood with some nifty shareware games that are readily available for download off of the web. I have only had it for about a week, and I know that I haven't even scratched the surface of what this can do. So, you might be asking, why didn't I give it 5 stars, if I like it so much. The truth is, the price is pretty steep. It's faster, and has more memory than the Palm V. Is it worth the extra cost, though? Well, that a decision that you'll have to make for yourself. But I'm not trading mine in anytime soon.
