Rating: Summary: Palm Vx - Still one of the best. Review: Next to the current power hungry CE Win based devices the Palm Vx is a gem! The Vx is the sleek Porsche compared to the gas guzzling muscle cars. They may make a lot of noise and have better radios, but they loose it in the curves. There's always room for improvement so here's my overview.Pros: Small footprint / Lightweight / Clean lines. Stable OS system. A multitude of thousands of killer applications written to Palm OS. Robust synchronization software w/ desktop applications. E-mail and online web ports are a snap (+ modem + MultiMail Pro etc.). Fast enough CPU for the job. Low power consumption. Rechargeable built in battery pack. Many other (Palm units) out there to exchange info w/ (re: IR). Stable peripherals modem/ battpac/ keyboard/ etc. Great Palm culture / Non-company help sites / information. Cons: Screen legibility could be better yet. No expansion (slot) w/out giving up serial connection and making the unit larger then its name sake. Poor speaker. Poor power on button placement - can click on in transit w/out very firm- or, hard- case. Support - both Telephone- and E- could be more substantial.
Rating: Summary: old, but it's still a great PDA! Review: while I haven't actually had the palm Vx, I have the IBM Workpad c3, which is the same thing painted black with the IBM logo on it. I think it's great, and for it's price, it's easily affordable to everybody. it's got 8 MB of memory, which is more than the old zire and the same as the new one. the only things I don't like about it is that there are no expansion slots or earphone jacks. another thing that sucks is that after a while of being in my pocket(about 1.5 years) the buttons get loose. that might be because of all the subhunt playing, but I'm not sure. the two outside buttons got loose and the datebook one gets wedged into the case a lot. otherwise, I love it.
Rating: Summary: The standard that set the standards for handheld PDA's Review: The Palm Vx is really a standard-setter. Small footprint, great connectivity to the PC and to mail programs like Outlook. Many, many applications written for it, some shareware, some you can purchase. Easy synchronization via the cradle interface, which is also the recharging unit. Here are the pros: Small, lightweight, fits in a shirt pocket. Standard OS that is widely used. LOOOOOOOONG battery life. Plenty of memory for most text-based application. (8MB) Plenty of peripherals like a sexy little keyboard, a combo ballpoint pen-stylus, travel adapter kits, car battery charger, IR exchange which works quite well. Cons: It's fragile. Even in the brushed steel folding case I bought, the screen broke when it slipped from my hand. It's Palm OS, which means it doesn't have the advantages of the Pocket PC (former Windows CE) OS to run PowerPoint, (there is a new program for the Pocket PC that lets you view and hear PowerPoint.) It doesn't have color display. The screen font could be clearer (there are better ones on other PDA's) The telephone and wireless stuff isn't in it (that's either the Palm VII with built-in wireless or other brands.) No MP3 player, no voice recorder. And the battery pack is not removable, although it lasts plenty long. Should you buy it? If you want an organizer and email reader, this is excellent. It's what I use every day. The long battery life is a real boon to the traveler. It packs a lot for the money. The optional accessories are priced too high, but this is a complaint against the industry in general. You buy the basic unit, but to add some useful doo-dads, you can rack a significant percentage of the purchase price in no time.
Rating: Summary: Good, but keep a paperclip in hand. Review: The palm works well and is simple to use and download things. But, this palm crashes alot!
Rating: Summary: Out of date, but still a goodie! Review: Even though it is an old model I can still find much use for it. There are tons of programs you can find on the web to use with it. If you look hard enough you can find thousands of freeware programs to quickly install on your palm. Since this model is somewhat out of date most programs and accessories designed for it are much cheaper then when they first came out. Buying used accessories from Amazon or Ebay can really help you out in making the most out of your Palm V. Keyboards and modems that cost 100's of dollars now cost 4 bucks. Imagine that! In final I am overjoyed with my Palm V!
Rating: Summary: A great PDA. Review: The Palm Vx has a great amount of memory. I have a ton of applications I downloaded off the internet. I still have about 2.3 MB left. It has good graphics, but it doesn't have a color screen. It seems like it is a stable model and does not freeze up a lot. I also have not experienced any problems with the stylus or screen. It doesn't have "Dead Spots" (where the screen won't respond to the stylus.) Another problem is though that it has no expansion port for more memory, applications, and more. But I like it just fine without it. Overall, I think this is a great Palm, but for the color and memory expansion lovers you should try the M130, M515, and Tungsten's.
Rating: Summary: Getting obsolete Review: My first handheld device was a Vx.With its huge memory it was indeed one step ahead of its time. But with the introduction of the new,expandable,color-screen handhelds powered by ARM processors and PalmOS5.0,I'm sad to say,but it is getting obsolete by now. Those who do not need color screen and who do not want to pay much may still select to buy it.Indeed it has capabilities not so much less than the latest PDAs,but its multimedia capabilities are very poor with respect to,i.e. Sony Clie NX70V or Palm Tungsten-T.
Rating: Summary: Palm has done it again! Review: This handheld is made with great quality! I myself had a Palm M105 which has very similar stats. The Palm Vx is so much better made and the rechargible battery is awesome! I would recomend this to anybody who needs to get organized or just likes to play games in school or work!
Rating: Summary: It's not a PDA, it's a WORKHORSE!!! Review: I've had my Palm Vx for almost 3 years now, and the only problems I've had with it have been some quirky behavior when I let the battery charge drop too low. Charge it up again (and it charges fast) and no problem. I travel a lot and I am forgetful too. I don't back up or charge the thing every day, so the super long battery life is a really big plus for me. Besides that, I think the Palm OS is excellent. It is simple and effective, and that's what I'm looking for in a handheld device. I have never had a problem with the OS in the 2+ years that I've had this thing. I use mine mostly for ebook reading, and it is amazing. I can store 10 novels in it no problem and still have plenty of memory left. People are amazed that I can read on it, but the text is about the same as in a normal novel. Plus you can read in the dark with the backlight! I can also keep track of recipes, shopping lists, expenses, evereything. Just what these devices were intended for. Honestly, I'm not some blindly devoted Palm fan. I am probably going to get rid of this one because I want to be able to listen to mp3s. This points out the MAJOR drawback of the Vx, which is that it is not expandable, and it is definitely not for any sort of multimedia use. It's really too bad, because in all other respects, it really rocks! I only hope that I can find a PDA that can play mp3s that is as reliable as my Palm Vx. My girlfriend is going to be starting law school in the fall, and she uses an old beat up paper planner that she got for free from her college. This valentine's day she is getting a brand new Vx. and flowers of course :-)
