Rating: Summary: Palm IIIc is wonderful Review: I recently purchased this item. I choose this model for the color and I am thrilled with it! Being a mortgage specialist and on the road seeing realtors here in Connecticut as well as Attorney's and customers, I need to be organized and feel connected. I have pulled out the organizer and impressed realtors who veiwed their name, customers we are working with and past customers, all the notes from the transaction. It is great! I will be purchasing the modem that will work with my cell phone to check emails and the digital camera to take and veiw pictures. I didn't give 5 stars because I just cannot get the downloads to work for me and this system. Maybe I am missing something, perhaps someone may have helpful info for me? aschaedler@aol.com
Rating: Summary: A great and fun product Review: I have always owned windows ce devices and I purchased the Palm IIIc because I wanted the Palm OS but with color. I have not been disappointed. With the new low pricing of the IIIc, it sells for less than the Vx and, despite the added size, color is well worth it. Numerous color apps are now available and everything from the address book to games is clearer and more fun on the IIIc. The size is relly not an issue, as it is still much smaller than any CE device. The palm 3.5 OS is fast and is yet to crash on me. The device can become addicting and I would also recommend, as others have , obtaining the Chrome color adjusting software... which maximizes the screen and can save battery life if you convert to the black backround. The battery itself stays charged for about 3 days with heavy use before it bugs out. Overall, this is a super product for[the price]. One more thing; Palm will probably come out with a wireless device the size of the Vx with a color screen farely soon. However, I assure you such a device will cost more...and this IIIC will suffice very nicely until you need get your next "fix" fo a new gadget!
Rating: Summary: Less than satisfactory display Review: Lets face it, the main reason to purchase this model over the other offerings from Palm or Visor is the colour display. Unfortunately, having used both the IIIc and the Vx, I'm underimpressed with the quality of the image on the IIIc. It is colour, which is a pretty neat change to Palm's previous greyscale models, but I find it much more difficult to focus on the screen image. It seems to flicker quite a bit, and gave me a headache after using it for an hour or so. I found the screen on the Vx to be much more comfortable, especially if used for a long period of time. The Palm operating system is wonderful, much easier to use, and more efficient, I feel, than Windows CE, but I'd go with one of the b&w models for the time being. Also, the IIIc is much thicker and less stylish than the brushed aluminum case of the V series, which may be something you want to consider before purchasing this model.
Rating: Summary: Great in the field! Review: I work in a rural area in Kentucky - I need a portable solution to keep track of stock. This little thing's as neat as they come and I like the games on it too!
Rating: Summary: The ultimate gadget, and a great organizer too Review: This is the ultimate gadget, and a great organizer too. The green w/ black displays on "lesser" PDAs are the equivalent of PCs of 15 years ago. The future is color! The below reviews referring to the Palm IIIc's color display as not being bright enough are not entirely correct. Mine may be an exception, but it is almost too bright when set at 2/3 brightness. It does everything (and more) than anyone would ever need. You want a toy? You want an organizer? You want to read e-mail off-line? You want to browse web pages off-line in your car? The IIIc will do it all...I too though that I wouldn't use it enough to justify the price, I was wrong. It makes getting organized actually fun. You cannot go wrong.
Rating: Summary: Try before you buy Review: I would ask that anyone who may be interested in purchasing this product to first try and see the unit for yourself. The reason why is that prior to actually seeing the Palm IIIc in person, I was basically going on the reviews and photos that I had been seeing in the advertisements. First of all, the screen IS NOT as bright as I had first assumed. The Palm website, the advertisements and the "demo" unit (a fake Palm IIIc with a printed fake screen) found at various outlets shows the screen as a brilliant white color. I thought that this was what I would see when I finally went to the store (CompUSA) to see the Palm IIIc in person. Upon arriving there, I saw the unit and picked it up. The screen was very dim and rather gray. My first impression was that the unit's brightness control was set to low. I brought up the brightness screen to adjust the unit and to my surprise, it was set on *maximum*. I asked a store rep if this unit was broken. He said no and that this was the maximum brightness. I also saw the Handspring Prism there and the screen appeared just as gray and dim. This was very dissapointing as I was expecting a very bright screen. As Palms go, it's a nice little unit. It runs the Palm software and has a truckload of software programs that are freely available on the internet. Is the Palm IIIc worth it? In my estimation, the answer is a definite NO. As this unit's primary attraction is the color screen, I find that this Palm does not meet the very basic requirements needed for a PDA...and that requirement is legibility. If you are working in a office enviornment or even in a commonly well lit area, you will find that the brightness of the screen will be a major problem...it is just too dim and lacks contrast. The screen, as I have mentioned before, is dingy looking under normal lighting conditions. The high price of this unit does not justify it's color ability. I believe that anyone in the market for this device should definitely try the unit out for themselves before purchasing it. The ads and photos you see of the Palm are very different from the real world screen of the Palm IIIc and are rather misleading. Try before you buy.
Rating: Summary: Good product for the money Review: I compared all Palm and Handspring products on the net and in person. I like the color display the best. Even though not all programs are written for the color units, they have a better display on color than b/w. Instead of grey tones on b/w it truly shows b/a and is easier to see. For the price, I thought this was the best deal available. You should definitely get 8 mb RAM if you are going to do much at all with these. Although I really liked the add on modules with the Handspring Visors, I couldn't justify (the price) for their unit. Amazon had the best deal by far on these and I felt more comfortable ordering from them than other companies on the net.
Rating: Summary: Beware HP/Dell users Review: I purchased the Palm IIIc recently and it seems to work well. However, the cord that attaches the cradle to the serial port is not compatible with most new Dells and HP's. My computer got hung during the WIndows start up everytime the cradle was plugged in. Then, it is nearly impossible to get costomer service from Palm. I found out what the problem was from an HP representative (much better service). Specifically: the cord "0013" does not work. Only the cords that end in "A". Palm will not send you a new cord, they will only send an adapter. If you don't need color, consider purchasing an organizer that is easier to get set-up!
Rating: Summary: my second Palm Review: I bought it. It is my second Palm. I bought it for my wife's birthday present last month. Comparing to the Palm V (I am currently using), the screen is great at indoor where the light is dim or dark, but not as good as my Palm V at outdoor. We started to beam to each other from time to time. It is a great and affordable color handheld.
Rating: Summary: a gadget to adore! Review: I love the palm IIIc. This adorable handheld does everything you could want it to do and more. It is well worth the additional cost to have the color monitor and graphics. The color makes it easy to see at a glance, and that makes the device even more easily usable. For daily use, this palm is a delight in every way.
