Rating: Summary: Color at last! Review: I am an owner of the original (US Robotics) Palm Pilot and have enjoyed using it for the past five years. When the 3com Palms came out, I never saw the need to upgrade since the original was more than adequate to meet my needs as an appointment scheduler, e-address book, and light-duty memo keeper. The IIIc changed my mind. The color capability makes text easy to read and, with the addition of Franklin Planner software, this has become a key to a stress-free work and home life (all the more necessary with a busy schedule as a graduate student, full-time counselor, and husband). The 8 megs affords me the opportunity to load the Franklin-Covey software without juggling other needs and wants. Battery life is livable but the key to me was the color capability. Unless ultimate weight savings is part of the buy decision, the IIIc and the IIIXE seem just as functional as the V, and I've found that I don't always need to be hooked up to Internet to lead a fulfilling life (hence the reluctance to shell out the additional bucks for a VII).
Rating: Summary: My perfect (digital) companion. Review: My girlfriend is very jealous. This device (which she calls a "thingymagig") has kept me on the ball and steered me in the right direction since I opened its box. I've downloaded all kinds of great programs for it, with goodies like Tetris, Solitaire, or Pacman--I know those are all games, but there really are some useful applications for it. To appease her, I put her pictures in my Album To Go program. Now her complaint is that I look at my Palm IIIc (or "dag blasted contraption") to see her, even though she's right in front of me. Ridiculous, huh? I put everything in it: small notes to myself, little drawings, stuff like that. At least I'm drawing hearts and stuff on my "stupid whatever it is." Oh, and let me mention how well the four set functions work: the planner, telephone list, to do list, and memos. The functions are near perfect in how intuitive and thoughtful they are. My girlfriend is now hoping I will slowly fall out of love with it in the next few months. Hmmm, I hate to break to her, but this digital relationship might last a little longer than that. Ooops, 12:00 p.m., I have to get some lunch now.
Rating: Summary: Perfect! Review: I have had my Palm IIIc for about a month now. Being new to the Palm experience, it took a while to get use to the graffit input and deciding among the many "add on" programs that are available. In this short time I have become extremely comfortable with the graffiti input(with a little help from Teal Script, a shareware add on)and wonder how I ever got this far without the IIIc. I was a little concerned about going with the color model after reading a couple of reviews stating dissatisfaction with screen visibility in bright light and battery life. Neither of these concerns are evident in my use of the IIIc. I have a docking station at work and one at home so I have the unit docked probably more than most and don't place the demands on the battery life that some would. I am totally satisfied with the product and very glad I went with the color model. There are literally hundreds of free and shareware add on programs available that allow you to customize your Palm to your needs. Great product, and not a bad emergency flashlight either.
Rating: Summary: First jump into the Palm Pool Review: At first I thought that in buying a Palm Pilot I was really just getting something for the sake of having something cool. Then I got the thing, and WOW was I wrong. I have found tons of uses for the Palm Pilot IIIc, and the color screen is fantastic. Even my girlfriend who bought it for me lovers the ability to be able to read ebooks. The cost was a bit high, but well worth it, and I have found lots of add ons and even got the digital camera atachment which also Works Fantastic!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: I've had my IIIc for exactly one day now and I LOVE it! I got a wonderful IIxe for christmas, and though VERY cool, being an artist I was dying for something with color - to show off artwork and such. This unit is top notch! For the price, it can't be beat. The software available for the PalmOS is ..., and reminds me of the TRS-80/Commodore days. People just love to play with this toy. I saw alot of reviews criticizing the brightness of the display, and I personally feel it's VERY bright. In fact, I was at a restaraunt tonight (average lighting - incandescents, roughly 60-70 watts) and was using the IIIc and two of my friends commented it was so bright it was lighting up my face. So don't let that detour you. The display is very legible and quite elegant, very easy on the eyes. And thanks to another reviewers recommendation, the chrome utility is a must have! My only concern is the battery usage. By my intense usage today (I kept it on straight for roughly 2 hours) and keeping a close eye on the battery monitor, I would average you'd get about 6 hours of straight usage from the unit on a brightness setting of half (the lower you set it, the less power it drains from the battery). Now mind you, this is about what you'll get with pretty much all the other color/backlit handhelds out there. In fact, I've read the Handspring Visor Prism is twice the power hog the IIIc is. Backlights just suck that power down in general. Also keep in mind, after you've had it for a while. You'll use more out of a necessitiy, so your batteries will last for a while without a charge. Bottom line, the IIIc rocks. I gigantic software base to choose from, and a stable and very inexpensive unit. You can't go wrong. Wait until you start running into other buddies that have palms, I've already beamed business cards, and several pictures of my artwork with several people! ... I love technology. :)
Rating: Summary: Palm IIIc Review, a Technology Consultant's prespective. Review: This is my second palm, having shattered the screen on my original Palm V and so far i have been extremely happy with this new model. The memory difference between this unit's 8MB and the V's 2MB is extreme!! I am finally able to sync with full-scale corporate databases without a memory issue, as well as the development of custom desktop application-channeled Palm applications without the memory constraints of the V. It clearly dosn't have the lavish sleek look as the V series does, but i'd gladly trade that up for the color screen which is quite sleek in it's own right. Only con i've seen so far is lack of wireless modem's that are compatible with the IIIc unit, nevertheless this is a definite improvement over earlier models!!
Rating: Summary: First time user, How did I survive without it? Review: I've had it for three weeks now, and even after the first week I coulden't imagine how I ever lived without it! It has even survived an unfortunate couple of mild drops apparently unscathed. This is my first handheld and I love it. The only draw back is the difficulty viewing in bright sunlight. However, this is more than surpassed by its ease of viewing in dim lighting. Due to my profession, I needed a model that provided easy viewing in twilight to near total darkness. I tried some coleagues monochrome models (Handspring and Palm)under these situations and quickly realized that their artificial "reverse day-glow" backlighting would not meet the muster. By the same token, I have yet to discover any type of artificial indoor lighting which causes the screen to was out the way it does in the bright sunlight. I am now convinced that all human beings--especially those with anything resembling a demanding profession--need some sort of palm device. If you plan on using it in twilight or dark conditions for more than an occasional brief glance, it needs needs to have some sort of true backlighting, ie. color device. I Love It!
Rating: Summary: I love my Palm IIIC. Review: Pros: Bright and clear colors, Rechargeable Lithium Ion battery Cons: Heavier and bulkier than the Palm V The colors on the Palm IIIC are bright and clear. This is where Palm monochrome users will be impressed. It is much easier to read. The Palm IIIC comes with 8MB storage capability and a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. Please take note that the Palm IIIC is a little heavier and bulkier than the Palm V series. If you are planning to buy your first Palm, I suggest you buy the Palm IIIC for its color. Would you buy a black and white TV today? However, if you are looking for size and weight with no preferences to color, go with the Palm Vx. I bought the Palm IIIc when it was first introduced. Now that the price dropped from its original release price, I suggest you jump into color. There are more applications today that support the color operating system, like internet clipping and photos. Just can't wait until someone comes up with a wireless modem for this device. Speaking of applications, Palm forgot to enhance the Address, Date Book, Memo Pad, and the To Do List with color. Hello? These four applications are the main programs. But I like the fact that the Palm IIIc works great in the dark. Regards, Attic Village
Rating: Summary: Great with 1 quirk Review: I got the Palm IIIc for Christmas, and I have been very happy with it (admittedly, I have not been using it long, but I have given it an enthusiastic test drive). It performs very well, and the reviews I read before buying seem to have been accurate. However, I have noticed that the screen seems darker and more grey whenever I am somewhere with florescent lighting. I did not notice a problem with the display when I was at home, but at the office and in a department store I did notice a definate grey caste to the screen. At first I thought it was due to the protective film I put over the screen, but after removing it and checking again, my only explanation is that florescent lighting must affect the contrast. I do not want to discourage anyone from buying this great product, but other shoppers who are in the office more should be aware!
Rating: Summary: Got a SECOND ONE FOR MYSELF after Wife got hers for X-Mas Review: Neither my wife or I have EVER had a "PDA' but I decided to "Jump on the band wagon" and get her one for Christmas. We opened presents on Christmas Eve and played with this unit for about an hour, after that my mind was made up. I WAS GOING TO GET MY OWN! This thing is GREAT and EASY TO USE! Neither my wife or I have had any problems learning how to use it. I have read all the reviews on Amazon and can't see WHY some are crying about the screen color and/or brightness. Both the color and screen brightness are GREAT and I have NO PROBLEM reading ANYTHING. I also had NO PROBLEM connecting it my HP computer as one previous reviewer mentioned. I found one reviewers comments useful regarding the "Color" software for this unit. I plan on getting it tomorrow. DEFINATLY get the color screen protector and a carry case. Our carry cases are made by "Palm". I looked at the off brands and found Palms to be better made and the same price. I am not a computer wiz so for me to say this PDA is EASY TO USE is an understatement. The "sync" between the PDA and computer is SO EASY and takes about 15 seconds to complete with the push of ONE button. To get the initial info into my PDA, I found it easier to type the info on my computer and then sync it to the Palm. It saved me time and I got a 100% transfer of info with no problem. Well that's about it unless anyone wants to buy my old big and bulky 2001 day planner. Hum, I guess I should donate it to Good Will and take the tax write off!
