Rating: Summary: Not what I expected! Review: When I first got this PDA from my parents I was thrilled. Being 14 and in school I thought it was to be a great tool for taking notes and making homework. I found out that what I had expected was way off course, since the graffiti function is horrible. It is just to slow. Whenever I try writing a G it usually writes a H or something else. Believe me I have practiced but it just still doesn't work for me.And while I'm at it then my touch screen is extremely of course. Often when I choose a subjekt in the menu, I hit something else. I constantly have do correct this. And by constantly I mean after about 5minutes of writing. The screen is also not to be used in direct light of any kind. And can't be used out door!! A lot of people say that the software is great...huh!! I've tested quite a few pieces of software and there is only one which I can actuelly use! Dont get me wrong I like this PDA but it's just not good enough for my demands. Cause I cant really use it for taking notes. But at least I can use it for writing down homework. So after half a year with this I'm selling, and buying a Ipaq. And to sum it up, look at the Pocket Pc's before buying this...At least if you want to use it for writings...
Rating: Summary: A great product and fun to use Review: I received the Palm IIIc as a gift one year ago, and I am very pleased with it. I have had little or no trouble with the unit (although it will occasionally shut down when the battery charge drops below half)and I find the color display easy to read. I strongly encourage that you order the Chrome program (you can find it on the internet), to allow you to customize the color settings. My only complaint, and the reason I did not give it 5 stars, was the difficulty in viewing the screen in bright sunlight. This is my first Palm product, and I have been very pleased in using it, and in the customer support from Palm. I recommend it to anyone looking for a Palm-based color product.
Rating: Summary: STEAR CLEAR of this device!!! Review: Okay, I'll admit that in the past I have been skeptical of reviews that rip a product. But please listen... this product is a joke and Palm's service is a joke. The unit has been returned twice within one year for different defects. Service is terrible. Rep's don't care if you have a problem, and are not solution-oriented whatsoever. The two exchanges have taken a cumulative month, all for a product that is less than a year old. And to make matters worse, the unit cannot be read outdoors at all. Even on a cloudy day. Trust me, rather than use THIS product, you are better off with a pad of paper and a pencil.
Rating: Summary: If only I could see the screen . . . .! Review: I've owned a Palm IIIc for just over a year now. I chose the Palm IIIC over the other versions because I enjoy the color screen and Palm programs that use color. It made the Palm more attractive to me. I love it. I particularly enjoy the vast range of software available for the Palm platform - especially the handheld version of Quicken. I can not only keep all addresses, appointments, notes, etc on my handheld, but I use it like a checkbook register with the Landware version of Quicken for the Palm. Instead of recording a check, cash or credit card transaction in my checkbook register, I simply enter it straight into my Palm. Then when I hotsync, all my data is exported to my Quicken program. No double entry like I used to do(first into the handwritten register and then typed from the register into my Quicken program). No receipts stuffed in a pocket to enter later. It has made my Palm indispensible. Palm also has an excellent service program. I was having trouble hot-syncing after about 11 months. Palm immediately and candidly suggested that I return my Palm for an immediate replacement. I had a like-new Palm back in less than a week from when I mailed it in. No questions; no fuss. The only two drawbacks to the IIIc are the inability to see the screen in bright daylight - it's completely washed out - and the weight of the Palm IIIc. It's rather heavy!
Rating: Summary: tricks to enter data with graffiti Review: So many users found it is difficult to enter data in IIIc. Accuracy would be higher if you darken the brightness of the Palm.
Rating: Summary: Great Entry Level Palm Review: The Palm bug hit our physics department last year so I decide to jump on the bandwagon too. I must say that I'm happy I did. I never liked the monochrome displays so I went with the Palm3c. The color screen is so much better than what my friends have. True, the screen is impossible to read outside, but the screen is great whenever the sun isn't around. The screen is also bright enough to be used as a small lantern during blackouts so you'll never be left in the dark if you have your palm around. I also recommend getting this version because it has a rechargeable battery. Since I sync it every day, I let it sit in the cradle when I work and I go home with a full charge. I do try to have the brightness of the display in a low setting since that drains the battery fairly quickly. But there has only been one time when the batteries were low, and that was only before I bought the travel charger. It really has organized my life. The standard programs that come with it are good enough, and yet there is a ton of stuff out there that squeezes out every bit of functionality out of the thing. I recommend getting Avantgo. If you do, you'll never run out of reading material. If you are curious about what the palm does but don't want to plunk down the serious money, this is the one to get.
Rating: Summary: Some comments on the battery Review: I just had a comment to make about the internal lithium-ion battery. I've had my IIIc for almost 18 months, which I've heard is about the life expectancy of the battery. Since it costs 1/4 to 1/3 of the purchase price of the unit to get the battery replaced, you need to factor that in to the long-term costs for the device. I still prefer the internal battery on the IIIc and the Vx to the replaceable AA batteries on the Handspring. Two other people I know have them, and at least once they've forgotten to change the batteries on their Handsprings, and they lost all their data and had to do a Hot Sync to restore it all. With the IIIc, I usually just charge it up every night so I've never lost any data. Also, a couple of times I tried running the battery all the way down until the unit won't even power on at all, to see if it would preserve the information in RAM even if there wasn't enough power to turn on the screen. That's exactly what happened. After the IIIc had recharged for about 20 minutes in the cradle, I could then turn it on, and all the data was still there. So even if it goes totally dead, if you get it on recharge right away, you should be okay. I don't know how much time you get, but I think mine was dead for at least several hours before I noticed it and stuck it in the cradle. So far my battery still works okay but it is showing some signs of aging, and I may need to replace it soon. After recharging it a few times, it refuses to charge past 65% of full, and to fix this I have to discharge it all the way, usually a couple of times, to get it to back up to 100% again. I've read that the best way to handle the battery recharges is to not discharge it completely all the time, as that is hard on the battery. You should just charge it up every day, and then about once a month discharge it all the way. Otherwise you start having the recharge problem I mentioned earlier. Still, I figure mine is still usable for another 6 months the way it is, even if it doesn't recharge all the way.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Toy! Review: The Palm IIIC is a wonderful toy! I call it a toy because I am a gadget lover and my Palm is lots of fun and it keeps me on top of things. When making the decision to purchase, I immediately fell in love with the vibrant colors this Palm offers--in fact, that was the final decision maker after I was already convinced with the 8 megs. It holds the entire Holy Bible, family photos, downloaded email, spreadsheets, dictionary, and mobile web--which includes news, stock info, etc. The many games available for the color Palm also make it a great way to quiet a busy 5 year old in church. The only reason I did not give it a perfect score is because I would love it if I could add e-books to it now! Overall...You'll surely step into the future with this one!
Rating: Summary: Color is wonderful! Review: I had no idea how great this screen could look and what a difference color would make. I just want to turn it on all the time just to look at it. The main drawbacks are relatively slow processor (though much improved with Quickbits and FastCPU), can't expand the RAM, and 8 bit rather than 16 bit color. Pictures aren't great at that low resolution, but games look beautiful. My grayscale visor platinum looks quite utilitarian in comparison now. Have to admit that now with the price drop on the Visor Prism, that's a much better deal. But if you don't need the extra expandability and want an upgradeable OS, go for the IIIc. I love mine! doesn't get 5 stars because of the limitations and my first one was DOA but Palm replaced it in 2 days at no shipping cost to me as any company that likes staying in business would do.
