Summary: Sony Sham
Review: How could you sell a PDA that will not completely sync with Outlook, email syncs but forget contacts or datebook. Sony makes no mention of this. After twenty minutes with their voice recognition system--give me a break--and a call center somewhere--I found out I needed to purchase additional software $69.95 thank you.

Summary: Short on Software
Review: Just got the Sony PEG-SJ22 for Christmas and was very disappointed after several hours and mushing thru the Sony phone tree and a call center somewhere, that it will not sync with Microsoft Outlook-it will sync with email but not the calendar or address book. You have to purchase additional software for about $69.95. If you use Outlook and like keeping your calendar and contacts tied between your PDA and laptop--don't buy this Sony.

Summary: It's A Sony Sham!!!!
Review: I am very disappointed with this purchase. Though the product works ok, none of the documentation mentioned that I needed Intellisync Lite software to sync with Outlook. I already spent a good amount of money on the handheld itself and now they want me to go and spend more just so that the item is useful in the slightest? Ridiculous. Even more ridiculous, some "qualified" owners of this handheld receive free Intellisync Lite software, while others are left with an expensive paperweight for their desk until they can scrounge up the money for Intellisync. Sony should be ashamed!!!!

Summary: Good price/performance. Alarm not loud enough.
Review: Paid: $84.40 before tax ($130 less 12% less $30 rebate) at Staples, including a free case.

I'm upgrading from a CliƩ T-415, monochrome with 8M. Previously, I've used a Palm III and a PalmPilot Personal. I've also used the PC-based simulator. For the price, the SJ-22 seems like a fine deal. It's low-end, certainly.

SJ-22 Quick Specifications:
. 16M
. 320x320 high resolution 64K color display
. Memory stick
. Nothing special: no wireless, no vibrator, no MP3, no digital audio

Comments:

. The screen looks good, far more readable than the T-415 primarily due to the high contrast between the white background and the black text.

. My biggest complaint by far is that the speaker volume is too low. This is a long-time Palm problem, though the T-415 was better. I normally carry my palmtop in a fanny pack, and the alarm is only barely audible. In a noisy environment like a car, it'd be tough. Unlike the T-415, the SJ-22 has no polyphonic MIDI, and no ADPCM audio. This rather restricts your choice of alarms sounds. In addition, as on other PalmOS devices I've seen, the alarms are all very short, one or two seconds at most. I'd like the alarm to play for at least a minute, in case I'm in a noisy environment where I might not hear it at first or in case I'm sound asleep.

. I use my palmtop as my alarm clock, and so it is always on the nightstand in its cradle. I'd like to leave it with the backlight on and running a clock application, but the T-415 wouldn't leave the backlight on, even when externally powered. The SJ-22 is happy to leave the backlight on when powered, and so makes a dandy bedside clock in conjunction with BigClock or the included PhotoStand in one of its clock modes.

. The power switch is out of the way, a small flush button on the top of the unit. This is probably mostly bad. It doesn't help prevent accidental power-on, because the application buttons will power the device on. It makes accidental power-off pretty much impossible, but I've never had a problem with that. Presumably the primary reason for the location of the power button is to reduce the size of the face of the device.

. Like the T-415, the SJ-22 has a jog dial on the upper left side of the unit. This works well for one-handed use of some applications, in particular HandyShopper. Most of the newer CliƩ models have a roller in the center between the (rotated) up and down buttons. Although I haven't tried that configuration, I suspect it would be awkward for one-handed use. I can also tell you from experience with the T-415 that the jog dial allows you to make limited use of the palmtop even when the touch screen stops working. :-(

. The unit comes with PalmOS 4.1. I believe that high-resolution (320x320) support was added in PalmOS 5, so the SJ-22 has the same Sony-specific support that the T-415 has. Although the Hi-Res Helper feature gives most applications high-resolution fonts, low resolution stuff still leaks through. For instance, all launcher icons are low resolution, and I suspect that some high-resolution capable applications aren't compatible.

. Some applications aren't color-compatible. I don't know whether other color implementations have mechanisms for supporting these applications, but the SJ-22 doesn't seem to.

. The T-415 case is aluminum. The SJ-22 case is silver-colored plastic.

. (That's how I get the Quo Vadis files to the palmtop.) MS Autorun lets you select an application to run or a database to install when a Memory Stick is inserted.

. World Alarm Clock, unchanged from the T-415, seems almost useless. Who needs an alarm clock per se when one has the DateBook? Sure, it displays the time in several time zones, but so do BigClock and CityTime, and they don't display the times in a microscopic font, and BigClock is free.

Summary: Excellent choice for PDA
Review: This is my first PDA. I like it in a instant. For the price and function I got from this PDA, I think it's absolutely worth it.

For OEM software, I don't get much except Mail to read eMail. But there are tons of Palm OS based applications/software you can use for your purpose depending on what you want to do, many of they are shareware. I use Xmaster to extend the OS first, then install popular document reader like iSilo, getting a lot of fun for e-books and small, fun entertaining reading, after that you can install ListPro for all kinds of information reading and storing, the product keeps tons of information on their web site for downloading, such as FrancePlaceToSee, US states, capitals and presidents, cooking recipes, Job Search Info. I created my own Rebate Track Check List for track sending and receiving rebates, and created Travel Prepare Check List. My point is that there are plenty of software and data support for Palm platform, I even compared it with my friends who owns and are fan of pocket PCs, they were surprised to find out my use of this PDA is much more practical and useful than Pocket PC. I compared Pocket PC and Palm, I don't want to post length feature comparison list, there are many discussions on the internet. Basically, I think Pocket PC is good for those business people who want to use MS Office, and use familiar file systems, but Palm OS is lighter, much more flexible. Don't be scared from its specs, I was skeptical about the speed of 33Mz, but it turns out the speed is enough for normal applications to run, even for color games, like Bejeweled, Zap which is my son's favorite. You can also look at this way: it's at same price of GameBoy, but much better than GameBuy. It also can serve as a palm dictionary if you decide to get a dictionary software.

On the negtive side, you have to dig a little deep to make it very useful, if you are noy technique savyy, you probably need to consult your best tech buddy to understand things like Hack, DA, etc. I am very lucky to have a Palm expert friend to teach me for every step. I think most compaint for this PDA is because they did not fully explore its potential. For instance, the mail works for its native mail app, but not MS outlook style, I had no problem sync my mail from my laptop outlook mail from very first time.

Finally, a tip to save power: adjust brightness to almost lowest(it's quite enough to read in the daylight and background lighting), turn some sounds off, I could use it for a week for couple of hours daily usage without re-charging. This is one of the reason I am not fan of PDA with built-in a camera and a MP3 player, they use quite bit power. I use much better digital camera and MP3 player than any PDA can provide. If I turn the screen to its brightest, I can see the battery gets used pretty quickly. And even accessing additional information stored in expansion memory stick can wear away battery. Remember this is PDA, not a laptop.

Just want to share my experience.

Summary: Good and Bad about SJ22
Review: IF you want the Basic PDA functions this is the best deal. Here there are lot of complaints abt Sync with MS Outlook. The Fact is If you wanna sync just the Mails ,you don't need extra softwares (intellisync). You can do this with the supplied softwares itself.
But if you want to synch the MS Outlook Calender you need intellisync.
Apart from this negative point, this is an excellent PDA compared to other costly models.
I don't think PDA is the best to listen Mp3.So go for it if you don't want to listen Mp3...!!

Review: I've had a m105 for a couple of years but you could never do any thing with it so i bought this and it was one of my best investments. The back light is great but the sound is not the best but you don't need sound the color is great and one of my friends has a palm m515 that's worth about $250 and mine cost $150 and mine is just as good the only game it can't support is sonic. This palm is a must buy

Summary: Great PDA - Save some cash
Review: I have had a PDA since it was Palm Pilot. This was before Palm creator left and created Handspring (which was recently purchased by Palm). Before Palm Pilot was purchased by US Robotics and then 3Com. Before 3Com spun the company off as Palm.

I have given up my PalmPilot (Upgraded to 2MB) to move to this.

This machine has:
Crisp color.
Rechargable Batteries.
Great BASIC PDA software
Thumb wheel.
Screen Saver (which in the optional AC Cradle will be a virtual photo album on your desk).
16 MB
Expandable with the 128 or 128x2 (256) Memory sticks.

I am happy with my purchase (plus it was under $100).

As far as Outlook compatability...Buy the software or spend the extra $100.

Summary: Don't believe a word
Review: My experience? Aweful!!!! It is a lie that they will provide software to make it work with Outlook. They did this for a few and stopped. Do not buy from Sony folks! I spent 2 weeks over 6 hours on the "help line". In the end? Not Sony's problem, have a nice life. I am just trying to help others not have my experience. Don't be fooled by positive reviews, Sony people are the ones writing the good reviews. I am one abused customer and Sony doesn't give a rip.
Don't waste your money on Sony.

Summary: terrible volume
Review: Great product except that the alarm volume cannot be adjusted above what other PDA manufacturers call medium. Since the alarm is intergral to the DATE BOOK, if the date book is an important function for you, don't get the CLIE
