Summary: Basic model not for first time Palm users
Review: This is a great little unit that provides all the basics of a PDA. You really can't beat it for the price and value. However, if you are looking for something beyond basic schedule, contact, and to-do list management, look elsewhere. It does not have wi-fi, and other bells and whistles require the purchase of additional hardware. (MP3 playback, for example)

However, you do get what you pay for. The unit does not come with a hard copy of the basic instruction manual, which is available only in PDF format. It also does NOT come with Intellisync software, which is necessary to sync to Outlook. There have been conflicting comments about that posted to this review site, and I wish to clarify as a recent purchaser (Oct 2003) of this product what the situation is. ONLY purchasers who bought certain units within a serial number range were eligible to download the Intellisync software. Sony only did this because references to Intellisync were made during the software install, and when users discovered that the CD did not contain it, Sony made it available for download. This snafu was corrected in units shipped after a certain date. So if you bought one recently (like I did) you were not eligible for Intellisync. Thus, if you are an Outlook user like I am, you will have to shell out the 50-70 bucks extra to buy software such as Intellisync or PocketMirror. If this is important to you, you should consider that in the overall cost of the unit.

As an experienced PDA user, I didn't really need printed or "Advanced" instructions (by the way, you need to pay for "advanced" instructions). However, I could see that this situation could be very frustrating for a first-time user of a PDA. Given the low price point of this model, it is obvious where Sony decided to cut costs. All of this is really fine, however, if the lack of printed instructions and Intellisync doesn't bother you. For the money and basic functionality it provides, it is a fine unit.

Summary: Superb PDA
Review: This PDA is excellent. You just can't beat the price for a color PDA. The only issue with it is you just can't break the thing. If you break it it takes weeks to repair and costs you more than what you paid for the handheld in the first place.

Summary: Essential
Review: This is my first PDA, and it was an excellent buy. It was easy to set up and the software is really user friendly. Overall, it has become an essential part of my day-to-day activities.

Summary: Best for the price
Review: Great product.
The screen resolution is the best of all same priced palms.
I've been wearing it for over a year and I din't run out of power yet. Most color devices last for just a day or two. I use it to keep and get contacts, appointments, my children's photos (showing them everyone proudly with photo quality resolution ;-). I also use it playing puzzles and action games waiting and spending time in cabs, buses, and everywhere I need to keep entertained. That way I get my Clie powered without charge for 4 or 5 days.
I've been out for hollidays and forgot the charger. Using it a very few times to get some phones, it remained operable for 19 days! and arrived back home without loosing anything.
With 33 Mhz, the processor could be faster (when I run an integral calculation in a scientific calculator downloaded for free, it gets 6 seconds to get the result), but no other device would offer more power for the price.
The weakness? Infrared port is weak. While a Tungsten can deliver Ir signal from many feet distance, the Clie SJ22 needs to be closer than 2 feet (forget using it as a TV remote ;-)
Other cons: No service in Argentina for Sony Clie, and this version of Palm OS does not include Argentina as a country option at the setup!!!!!! (Don't know later versions).
Anyway, chosen Brasil as my country :-( I din't need yet any service for my Clie thanks God (and Sony of course)

Conclusion: You have a lot of money? Go and buy any plane-like device (of course there are better devices in the market).
You have JUST this money? Don't think about it. Go and buy one Sony Clie SJ22.

Summary: Not worth to buy. It is a piece of trash.
Review: When the handset is fully discharged, all the data will be lost. Twice I lost all my appointments and meetings information and other important notes. I dumpped it to my trash can.

Summary: The Honda Civic of Handhelds....
Review: Just picked up the Clie sj22 - a total impulse buy. I started with a PalmPilot Personal and then upgraded to a Palm Vx, both of which I was very happy with. I only got the Sony b/c I found a great deal and I was interested in finally going color. Which, by the way, the Sony does BRILLIANTLY! It's amazing how gorgeous this screen is!

I found the handheld very easy to use. The manual is not included in hard copy, but is included on the CD that comes with it - fine by me and mother nature. A USB cable for hotsync purposes is included - which is a godsend for me, as my laptop has no serial ports. I was using the IR to hotsync prior.

As far as the software bundle goes - there are lots of cool and useful programs included on the CD, as well as the standard Palm Desktop. If you are an Outlook user, I highly recommend BEYOND CONTACTS by DataViz. I used their Desktop to Go software for a while and DTG was evolved into the much more powerful Beyond Contacts - allowing to you utilize virtually the full functionality of Outlook on your Palm OS 3.5+ handheld. I have just hotsynched and it works famously. I have over 1600 contacts and 3700 calendar entries and it handled all of them, as well as my subfolders for contacts. It does not handle subfolders of the inbox, though. The color-coding of Outlook XP has been carried over to my handheld and this was one of the reasons I went color in the first place. It allows for many categories, instead of the standard 15 many of us were stuck with on the Palm. It also has a Today feature, similar to the Outlook Today view - very handy and easy to read thanks to the the hi-res color screen. Yes, this is software you have to pay for, but if you are a hard-core Outlook user and depend heavily on it, it is WELL worth the investment. ($29 for new users, $19 for DTG users). The company (Data-Viz) has excellent customer service and I've had some great experiences using their friendly human tech support. They even offer upgrades for free periodically to registered users. I don't work for them or anything, but I've done a lot of research to get Outlook onto my Palm and this was the best I found. It is so much more useful with the clear color screen of the Sony, too!

Some have also inquired in their review about music, photos, etc on the Sony...I read that you can buy an MP3 player that plugs into the Memory Card slot, as well as a digital camera and a game controller. Many other expansion options are available with the Sony SJ22, go to Sony.com for a list. Someone had also written that the SJ22 is compatible with many of the accessories for Sony's T and NR series handhelds. A good overview can be read here: http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/feature/sony_SJ22.htm (copy & paste into browser's address bar)

Conclusion: Like the trusty Honda Civic, the Sony Clie SJ-22 has all the basic features expected in a handheld, with some great little useful extras, and lots of expandability options, all at a great price. I went in the store not knowing much about Sony's handhelds and now I'm happy I took the chance and bought one.

Summary: Amazingly colorful with ease of use.
Review: I have been looking for PDA for sometime. And I found PEG-SJ22 from CompuVest.Com at 114.00 (Brand new! and not refurbished). The display is excellent and moving around within the application or from one application to another is definitely a plus. The best thing about this product is that you can prompt a keyboard (hence the real estate is efficiently used) or use the stylus to type or write numbers. That feature alone is worth spending money.

Summary: Functional and rugged
Review: I've owned my SJ-22 for 13 months. It's much more rugged than the Palm III series PDA's that I had previously owned. Of course, it has the superb screen, excellent battery life, and solid ergonomics for which Sony is famous. Small buttons didn't bother me.

I think this is (was) the sweet spot on price vs performance. I don't want a camera, MP3 player, or telephone. I want a functional and rugged PDA with great resolution and contrast in the screen.

Summary: solid, but not 100% perfect
Review: I have also lost data by allowing the unit to fully discharge (on vacation, away from an outlet). While the info is backed-up on my computer, not too helpful when you're hundreds of miles away! The graphics are excellent. Also, the interface is super easy to use. I was a Palm user before this and have been equally satisfied. The advantage to me was the memory stick expansion slot. Sony makes a solid product, it's just not 100% perfect.

Summary: Pretty, user-friendly, inexpensive
Review: I bought this for my mom, who usually hates having to learn to use new gadgets. She loves loves loves this PDA - she figured out how to use the essential functions almost immediately and uses the PDA daily. The color screen is lovely, the unit is just the right size to carry in a pocket or purse, and sync-ing to a PC is easy. It's not just about digitizing/combining your day planner and address book - PDAs are great for keeping lists, jotting down notes, and even sketching pictures. This is a great starter PDA for anyone who doesn't need WiFi/Bluetooth.
