Summary: fast, clean, bright, and easy to use; however, 1 flaw
Review: Prior to picking up this Toshiba I was playing around with and testing the Dell Axium X3 and HP Ipaq 1945. After toying and fiddling with the three devices over the course of 2 weeks or so I decided to keep the Toshiba over both the HP and Dell. Reason for this is the ease, use, and accessibility of the e405. The device is very light, believe its just over 4 ounces, the screen is very bright (even at when first turned on at 70%), and more than anything else when installing pocketpc software and utilities onto my e405 it never once crashed as opposed to Axiom which crashed twice and the Ipaq which no longer was able to detect the SD card I plugged into it after installing some bundled software (it should be noted that the Ipaq did not crash but seemed to have some minor discrepancies or bugs).
Essentially, I would recommend the Toshiba e405 to any 1st time PDA user or buyer who wants a device which is dependable, fast (even when with hordes of software installed or utilized through SD card), and almost un-noticeable given how light it is. However, the one major downfall to this device is the fact that Toshiba did not integrate neither Bluetooth nor Wi-Fi. If it were not for this, essential, feature the e405 would be swinging alot of HP's business away.

Summary: Great enough for a engineering student
Review: The e405 is one piece of well-made hardware. The toshiba fits nicely in your hand albeit a little small. The buttons and directional pad are crisp and recorder works better than I expected.

For those who are new to the Pocket PC industry and are thinking of buying a e405 I suggest reading the downloadable manual to get a feel for Pocket PC's.

Most people don't realize why batteries die after a few days of not being used. The manual explains this and it is because all data on the e405 (and other pocket pc's) are stored on the ram unless saved on a SD or CF card. Anything stored on ram needs to be powered to maintain the data, hence battery drain over time.

Back to my review of this little device. As a student I wanted something that could store all my task, appointments and numbers. This e405 does it well just like any good pocket pc should. What sets this apart form the crowd are its design (sleek) and construction. This device is solid. No flex like Dell laptops (ughhh!) and every line and detail is superb. (I've had a Toshiba Satellite for 2 years now and very minimal in complaints; no major or minor repairs needed yet, hence the confidence in purchasing Toshiba again.)

With the software I have had no problems at all with activesync or the OS. Battery life is 4-5 hours depending on what you're doing. (3.5 if one is playing just music.) Give yourself a good hour or two to get used to operating a pocket pc. As for the stylus, it minimizes in half when stored in the device and found it to be a little smaller than what I would have prefered. The screen is great in color and is very bright. The screen when viewed in bright light has quite a bit of glare. This is annoying at first but one get's used to it after a while and a few occurences of strained eyes. Sometimes the screen is a little finicky when I try to scrool down pages but that could be a user issue.

My reasons for 4 stars are 1) build quality 2) ease of use 3) ability to store into nand flash and 4) sleek form and style. This did not get 5 stars because for the price I paided the device should come with a cradle and slip case and perhaps bluetooth.

Summary: need better quality control
Review: The PDA is very impressive. It is only one half the thickness of my old IPAQ and about 2/3 in weight. The processor is also very fast. The SD slot works better than that in IPAQ. (The IPAQ will not detect the card if there are too many programs running or the card is inserted when the PDA is on.) However, I had to return mine because it was defective and it could not connect to ActiveSync. I belive it may be the one in a thousand but I was hoping the quality control of Toshiba would do better than that.

Summary: Excelent pocket pc for the money
Review: This is a very fast ppc. Every thing is fantastic, the color of the unit, the resolution.
The memory is 64mb its passable but you can load a 512 MB sd card and it works fantastic.
The builin speaker is good, and the microphone same.
