Summary: An excellent tool for a complicated world
Review: Why four stars? Because I'm a grinch and it's not perfect. Its screen is small, its memory could be more generous, and most of the existing hardware accessories don't work with it. But forget all that. If you're looking for a tool to keep organized and are not already a power Palm or Pocket PC user, the m100 is terrific. The built-in tools work well. Add-on software is plentiful, solid and often free. The physical package fits neatly in any pocket, looks good and is impressivly solid. It's so well supported by the market as a whole it's a bit unreal. I can (and do) sync my information with Outlook (using the included software) and with a couple of online organizers (so all my data is stored in multiple places in case of catastrophe.) I've downloaded photos of my sweetie from my PC, I'm keeping up with my finances, and all those notes to myself are now safe and organized and tied to alarms so I actually *DO* someting with them. I've used a variety of organizers, both electronic and paper, and NONE have been as truly useful as my m100.

Summary: Take a Moment to Consider the Alternatives
Review: The M100 was introduced in the summer of 2000 as a replacement for the Palm IIIe, Palm's previous starter PDA. It is essentially the same machine with a smaller screen in a slightly smaller package. In fact, the Palm has changed little since its introduction as the Palm Pilot in 1995.

As of this date in December 2000, the M100 and other Palms are falling behind in price and functionality compared to other PDAs. Palm is essentially riding on the popularity of their platform and is doing very little to increase the overall function and value. Popularity certainly has a value in terms of software available but I suspect that many first time PDA buyers will use only the PIM software (address book, todos, calendar, memos), making the "popularity" investment unnecessary.

I purchased my M100 primarily because it is the only PDA that has drivers for the Twiddler, a chording keyboard that I use when mobile. In addition, the unit is just small enough that it can be mounted on my forearm with a velcro strap, making it always available for taking notes and being alerted to alarms (use fliphack to turn the screen 90 degrees). But aside from this unconventional use, I use only the functions that can be found in a ... PDA.

Unless you have specific reasons to go with the Palm platform such as you have colleagues who you want to exchange information with (via the Palm's "beaming") or you expect to use software specific to Palm OS, I suggest looking into these similarly priced, more ambitious starter PDAs: Franklin eBookman, Compaq Aero 1550 (both function as MP3 Players and Media Readers) or, if you expect to use only PIM functions the Xircom Rex 5000 or Royal Vista are good budget choices. If you do need the Palm OS, the Handspring Visor is now the same price as the M100 and has many more expansion options. My current favorite is the eBookman.

Summary: My first Palm.
Review: Ok, so everyone knows about Palm, and everyone know what they do, right? I have supported Palm pilots as an independant computer consultant for years, but I have never owned one myself. However, my new employer gave me one, so I am a convert. I thought I would never use this thing, I thought the grafiti would be too dificult to learn (and it couldn't possibly recognize my horrible handwriting), I thought it would be too limited for my liking. But I have discovered this device is truly a blessing to the modern individual. I still do most of my data entry and modifications through Outlook, so that hasn't changed for me. And the synchronization with that application is awesome. It just gives me a way to view and modify on the road, and it works great. Also, for me, I wouldn't need any of the features the other models offer because all I really use it for is looking my contacts up and making changes on the road, so this is a great deal. I highly recomend this, and if you haven't had a PDA before, get this one. You'll be suprised at the difference it makes in your life.

Summary: The perfect toy for College and University Students!!
Review: I just bought the Palm M100 a few days ago and let me tell you, it's the best!! I'm a college student and it is really useful. With my Palm, I write all my assignments, new addresses, put on quick notes (like post-it's, only that digital) and a lot...lot more. Before I bought this Palm, I checked the other ones, but I think this is the best organizer for a College or University Student, unless you are a professional or business man (then get the other Palms). I think the price is worth it!!

For the 2MB that offers, it's the necessary for any beginner to the Palm World. I already download a lot a games, utilities and applications to my Palm and I even have more than the 85% of Free Memory.

I give it 5 stars since I love it! I really recommend it. If you do not need a lot a memory, connect to the Internet or are looking for a good price on a Palm, then get the Palm M100. You won't regret it!

Summary: All You Need
Review: The Palm m100 is all you need and more. It has plenty of memory - I abolutely love it. I do wish it was a little sleeker in design. It is about twice the thinkness of the PalmV and the outside looks cheaper (plastic) but hey for the price it does everything anyone needs it to do and more. It is a perfect gift for someone who is reluctant to spend the money for the top of the line and will only use it for addresses, games, and calendar anyway! I think this is a great buy for the money.

Summary: Disappointing.
Review: I owned the original PalmPilot (made when they bore the UsRobotics logo), and was very sad when Old Faithful took a dive onto a subway platform and ceased to be. I don't need wireless internet; I don't need 4 gigabytes of RAM; I don't need a Molybdenum case; I just need phone numbers. So, I bought the m100.

It behaves like a Palm device, and for that reason earns its stars. I love the Graffiti handwriting system--like most of my friends, I was able to learn it quickly--and I find the address book indispensible. But the m100 suffers from a few inexcusable design flaws.

First, and most damnable, they put the stylus in the back. It used to be in the right-rear corner. This may sound like nothing, but believe me, it's the difference between easy reach and frustrated fumbling. They also replaced a ridged stylus top (easy to grasp with the nails or even the flesh of the thumb) with a perfectly smooth and rounded ABS plastic tip, forcing you to hunt for the single notch.

The screen is *much* smaller than the one on my older model. Enough said.

Not only is the screen smaller, but the Graffiti writing area is significantly smaller. I'd say it's too small. Also, the numeric-recognition area has several times spit out a letter rather than the intended number, something that never, ever happened on my old model.

The power button is not distinctively colored, is cheaply constructed, and provides a very poor feel.

The supplied HotSync cable is nowhere near as elegant or easy to use as the old cradle. The plug is shaped so that the most natural way to grasp it to remove it from the m100 results in your inadvertantly pressing the HotSync button, causing an abortive HotSync while the cable is on its way out of the machine. I see you can buy a cradle...; I may do so.

I think Palm has begun to tread the same path followed by Apple, on which usability testing is scorned in favor of seemingly stylish design. Shame on them.

Summary: Perfect for those converting from paper to digital.
Review: This palm is a great product for those who are converting from their paper day planners to digital. It has more than enough memory to start out (in fact I've been using mine non-stop for 4 months and haven't even come close to maxing out the memory), is very easy to use, and is very well priced. However, I would suggest purchasing the leather wallet to go along with it. Not only will this keep you from misplacing your m100, but the leather will protect it from bumps and bruises (or for those who are accident inclined like myself, when it is knocked off of the counter)! I wouldn't go back to paper now if you paid me.

Summary: AWESOME!
Review: I have had my Palm m100 for a little less than a week and i absolutely LOVE it!! When i first decided to buy a Palm Pilot, I was stuck betweem the m100 and the IIIXe, but when looking at all the facts and technical data, the only thing you get that is slightly more memory, a slightly smaller screen, and a cradle! I have downloaded a couple of games and i have downloaded a Yahoo Channel from Avantgo.com and it allows me to see the latest sports scores, stocks, and news from around the world! It also lets me get the local movie showtimes and weather!! I am also a High School student and i am able to keep track of my homework and after school activites! It has made my life so much easier and i dont forget things anymore! 2MB may not seem like a lot but i still have over 70% of my memory with a lot of options installed! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT!!

Summary: My First PDA - Perfect for those new to Handhelds
Review: Very easy to install and use. I'd recommend this to anyone new to the world of PDAs. Nice low price, compared to the other PDAs that have more features. This one is perfect for my needs. It is much lighter than my old paper organizer, and takes up a lot less space. Get it for yourself, or as a gift for someone.

Summary: Palm m100 - Great Way of getting organized
Review: For the money, this is a great way of keeping organized. For a large majority of people, 2 MB of memory should be more than enough to hold addresses and phone number and schedule appointments on a calendar.

Key points that make this organizer better than traditional paper bound organizers

1. Search function. How often have you written a note down in your organizer, only to have to flip through page after page, looking for that note. Here, simply do a word search and the Palm OS finds every occurence of that note.

2. No more fading or torn pages. Often, with daily use, notations on paper may fade or leafs from organizers will deteriorate and fall out of the organizer. With Palm, everything is clear and legible.

3. Compact. I have yet to find a paper bound organizer as versatile and compact as the Palm

4. Information transfer. It's easy to transfer information from the Palm to the computer and vice versa. It certain beats transcribing.

5. You can't play games on a paper bound organizer (except maybe Tic Tac Toe)

Overall, the Palm m100 is a versatile device. Couple it with alternating sets of high capacity rechargeable AAA batteries and you've got a winner. It would be nice if it had a cradle to sit on, but honestly, the only use of the cradle is simply to transfer info (which doesn't take long) and to display the unit.

Addition of games and applications may eat up the 2MB of memory that is on the unit quickly, but it will hold a a number of games and apps before that happens.
