Summary: Palm m505 may sink the Palm line
Review: I was so excited about the new color Palm that I just couldn't bear the wait. I ran out and got one as soon as it came out. What a colossal disappointment. I couldn't tell the color screen from previous monochrome screens. The m505 has the dullest, hardest to read screen ever(in ANY light). Who is responsible for this travesty? I'm sure he/she works for Handspring and wants to drive Palm out of business. I have loved my Palm IIIc from day one and had high hopes of the m505 surpassing it in brilliance and clarity. I think I'll stick with my IIIc and hope that the near future will bring a new VASTLY improved color screen for the m505. Palm needs to seriously re-think the m505.

Summary: My favorite Palm yet!
Review: The is my third Palm. First I used the Palm Vx. I liked it because of its small size. I then went to the Palm IIIc for the color. The new Palm M505 combines the best of both. Granted, the screen could be a bit brigher, but I have found it very comfortable to view in almost every setting. Unlike the IIIc, you can actually use it in direct sunlight. That's a big help to me because I use it in my car a lot. The expansion slot is also a big improvement. I hightly recommend this Palm.

Summary: Palm m505 color screen almost there
Review: Palm's m505 just can't get started due to the poor color screen. In fact for most of my brief encounter I was convinced that the screen was turned off. It really is a shame that Palm chose such a poor performing screen for their product. Maybe next year they will have a better screen.

Summary: M505 is getting an unjustified bad wrap
Review: There seem to be a lot of comments about the M505's bad color screen. I have had mine for one week now and am not disappointed at all. After all it's a PDA not a high definition television. For what it does I think it's excellent. My only reservation so far is that most of the software out there for the palm O/S is still B&W. I am however expecting this to improve with all the color models coming out this summer. I think the package as a whole is leek and elegant.

Basically, I am very happy and it was well worth the wait.

Summary: Is there a zero star rank? This PDA deserves it.
Review: Who was the (person)to decide on marketing a great product with potential for 65,000 color with such a dark display that kills all expectation? What a dumb idea. Looking at this screen long enough would give you only eye strain or disappointment; for me, I got both. I would return this one soon. Palm, Inc. needs to correct this issue fast...

Summary: DO NOT BUY THE m505
Review: I'll make this short: The monitor is so bad that you can't read it in normal office lighting without holding it at an angle. Unforgiveable for Palm to put out a product like this. It looks good and it has fast performance, but you can't read the display.

Neither can you see the colors. Terrible. Whoever designed this display for Palm should be bend over the president's knee and paddled. This device is Amateur at best. I am actually embarrased to show it to people becaue they always tell me that they can't read it. One guy actually laughed at me when he looked at the display and after I told him what I paid for it.

DO NOT BUY.

Summary: Terrible color screen
Review: This screen with the 505 is absolutly terrible. I can not look past the grid lines to even see the pixels. I get dizzy. Stay with the monochrome and you will not regret it. I am returning mine tomorrow for a Vx!

The pictures on this web site does not show how bad the screen is.

Summary: Color is dim, Screen is very readable in varying light
Review: I was slightly disappointed by the dim colors on my new M505. However the screen contrast and readability are significantly improved over my old PalmIII.

The screen is much easier to read in bright light, and the colors are also much better in bright light. The backlight is very bright (white) and also lights up the outline of the graffiti area and the icons surrounding the graffiti area (making it easier to use the palm in the dark).

Overall I am very please with my new M505.

Some reviewers have complained that the M505 lacks a contrast adjustment. I carried mine for several days inside air-conditioned labs and outside in temps up to 90 deg F. I haven't noticed any difference in the contrast at different temperatures. My PalmIII always required a contrast adjustment when it got warm, and again when it cooled off. My M505 display isn't effected by temp changes.

The sound is much louder, and the processor is noticeably faster.

I haven't seen an M500 yet, but if the screen is actually paper white as advertised, then it may be easier to read than the M505. My advice is to examine both the M505 and M500 before buying one. The color can make applications easier to ready, but not many take advantage of it yet. I'm not sure its worth the extra money just use your Palm as a photo album, especially if the M500 is easier to read.

My M505 came with several add-on applications: DocumentsToGo, PhotoSuite Mobile, and PowerOne calculator.

The physical package is great. The buttons, especially the scroll buttons are much smoother than earlier palms.

Since the M500 and M505 use internal rechargeable batteries, you must carry either a hotsync cradle(also a charging stand) or a portable-charging unit when you travel for an extended period.

The add-on multimedia flash cards that you can buy for the Palm don't behave like regular memory. Most application don't know how to use the flash card. Most applications just look in RAM to find their files. To use files from flash, you must copy them from the flash into RAM. It looks like a multimedia flash card would make a good backup. Especially when traveling.

Summary: The M505 is great --- good upgrade from Vx
Review: I've used Palm computers for many years now and after getting the M505 and using it for about 2 weeks I feel it's the best one so far (for me). From reading various reviews it is very obvious that picking a Palm (or any PDA) is a matter of personal preference. Some, like me, will love the M505 screen, others will not. The number one factor for me is the size of the PDA. I carry this in my shirt pocket for that rules out all machines except the Vx, M500 or M505. The Visor Edge is thin but taller than the Palm machines. In my opinion the color on the M505 is great. I had a Visor but it was just too large to carry around. And if you can't carry it, you won't use it. Buy one from a store with a return policy and see if you like it. If not take it back...nothing to lose. I love my M505.

Summary: Size, speed and expandability
Review: Yes, the color screen could be better when not backlite. When backlighted the screen is brighter and easier to read than my Palm V. The real reason I purchased the 505 is the small size, I carry it everywhere in my suit jacket pocket. It is light and very easy to hold . The 505 looks great, the buttons are better looking and have a good solid feel to them. The new USB connection is an improvement, the battery charges very fast, every time I have docked the unit. And the ability to expand through the memory cards on a unit this small is an outstanding piece of engineering. I am extremely pleased with the new Palm 505. It meets both my needs and expectations for a handheld.
