Summary: Useless without a Keyboard
Review: A great piece of engineering with a fatal flaw - no keyboard - (those wireless take for ever things do not count)

Let me understand this - this is targeted at the professional market. So I bought one. now it is three months later and they can't even produce a keyboard to sell with this thing.

Dear fellow professionals, save your shekels and buy a Sony Clie - at least Sony provides adequate accessories and it is a highly competitive product.

I regret purchasing this

Summary: It's Not Perfect, But It's Still Pretty Amazing
Review: My Qualifications to Judge: Long-time user of Palm V; short time user of Sony Clie SJ-20
Positive Aspects of the Tungsten E:

Amazing screen; you can actually display color .jpgs on this PDA that rival the quality of a new SVGA monitor. I find that utterly amazing. You certainly wouldn't do that on an old Palm V, and the B&W Clie was pretty limited in this regard.

Great for Audible Books: I use the built-in MP3 player mainly for recorded books, as opposed to music. I've listened to a few music tracks and thought they sounded nice, though I'm definitely not an expert on MP3 players. It is great for audiobooks, however. The sound quality is great and with a big enough SD card, you can fit several volumes.

PalmOS 5 is very nice. The Clie had 4, which wasn't much of an improvement on OS 3

Performance. The Tungsten E has the response time I was used to with the Palm V, even when accessing the memory card. The Clie was unacceptably slow in this regard.

Software: The included Outlook conduit is the best I've seen yet; better than the Palm V version or the more recent Clie version. Works every time and is very fast.

The Docs to Go includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint, which can be handy. The Clie only included Word and Excel

Needs Improvement Aspects:

Boy I miss the docking station. Included with the Palm V; an extra accessory for the Clie; TOTALLY NOT AVAILABLE for this Palm, and probably never will be. The separate power and mini-usb would be very difficult to blend into a decent dock. I made a sort of a dock in my wood shop; a place to hold the Tungsten and thread the cords out the back, but it is a far cry from a proper dock.

Covers. Like some other reviewers, I found that the included flip cover scratched the top (where the logos are) of my Tungsten within 2 weeks. The hard cover available from Palm has also been a bit of a disappointment. The Palm rattles around a bit, so I had to add some insulation tape.

The finish. Again, like some other reviewers, I fear that this shiny paint job is not going to age well.

Battery Status: I would love to have some idea how much battery life is left.

Pretty funny buying a high-tech gadget in 2004 and having to resort to foam tape and the wood shop to make the product fully functional.

Conclusion: I would buy this product again; I don't think there is a better alternative in this price range.

Summary: Reason I'll NEVER buy product manuf byPALM AGAIN
Review: This is not really a review of this particular Tungsten. I had purchased TWO Tungsten Cs that both went down with bad screens. I was set to buy this less expensive model when I noticed some reviews indicated that the Tungsten "E" also had the same problem. I love the OS, but I sincerely hope that in the future they leave the manufacturing to Handspring, which is now part of Palm. All I can say is that I hope this merger results in real synergy, and does not result in Handspring PDAs which have the same abysmal quality control record as PDAs made by Palm. When I save up enough money, I may get a TREO 600.

Summary: #1 problem of Palm Product
Review: After researching on a PDA and reading all the reviews here, I got my husband a Tungsten E, from Amazon, for Christmas. It supposed to be "the best in the category". It is a sharp looking handheld.

However, yesterday, barely into the second week of the Tungsten's life, Having the palm in his back pocket, my husband sort of leaned against a table, (not even hard!) and the screen is gone! The image we get now on the screen is like a piece of burned paper ash. After talking to his collegues at work, my husband found out that cracked screen is the #1 problem in all Palm products! (Ours is not physically cracked.)

Tungsten might be "the best" as a lot of people here said. It is sure VERY expensive to begin with, too!!!

Summary: PALM SUPPORT AND REPLACEMENT PARTS
Review: Negative reviews are not real popular, so I'm going to try to make this as helpful as I can.

My 5-star rating above is really a rating of the Tungsten E handheld itself. If I were to rate Palm product support, that would be a horse of another color.

I saw several reviews which complain about the lack of replacement parts for the Palm in general and the Tungsten E in specific since it's so new. One reviewer blasted the E because the charger was misplaced and they could not get a replacement from Palm; hence had an unusable Palm.

Concerned about this, as we all should be, I called Palm Sources today at 800-881-7256 and spoke with a fellow who seemed both honest and (I hope) helpful.

The bottom line is that Palm has done a very bad job on their web site and on their so-called Customer Care phone line in explaining to us what to do to replace these essential accessories. Let me tell you what I just learned regarding the Tungsten E's 4 supplied accessories.

1. Recharger - Radio Shack was recommended (frankly I would not know where else to go to buy such a part). I was told to buy a 12V 1 AMP charger and to look at any other specifications on the back of the charger. He was confident Radio Shack had it or could order it if not in stock. I asked "what if the user lost the charger and couldn't 'read the back'". He said he could find that out for me but didn't have the information available during my call. Since I didn't lose mine yet, I can tell you it says "INPUT:120VAC 60Hz 100mA OUTPUT:5.5VDC 500mA". Also, oddly enough, it supplies a Palm P/N 163-5877A-US. Go figure that one out since Palm doesn't seem to supply it as a part.

2. USB Hot-Synch Cable - Like the Recharger, he said this was industry standard (same one used on digital cameras) and sent me again to Radio Shack. Told me to buy a "USB to mini-USB non-conductive cable". Honestly, the Tungsten E has such a bizarre looking connection, and in the absence of a cradle, I didn't think anything "non-Palm" would fit. He assured me this would work. I asked why they have replacement parts for other Tungstens and his answer was "They use cradles and that's a Palm exclusive".

3. Leatherette hinged flip cover - Only available on new Tungsten Es. Not that too many people would want to replace this, he suggested online auctions, which makes sense since so few people would want to keep this and why not get a few dollars for it?

4. Palm Essentials CD - Better make a backup copy of this. 'Nuff said on this subject.

I placed myself at risk writing this information here without visiting Radio Shack first but if the Palm representative was totally misleading, then you'll "shoot the messenger" and heap "unhelpful" votes upon me. I feel it's worth the risk.

BTW, on a subject I did not bring up, he told me that Palm would be introducing a travel adapter for the Tungsten so you could charge it from your car's cigarette adapter. Between using your Palm in the car, in addition to your cell, you might want to check your auto insurance rates first.

Anyway, hope this is helpful to someone.

Summary: No support
Review: We purchased this item in October, 2003. All was well until we lost the AC adapter which charges the battery. After numerous email exchanges with Palm as well as visits to the store where the unit was bought, we were told that the product was "too new" and they had no spare adapters to provide us. Basically, I have had a dead unit since November and cannot recover any data because the company doesn't support its own products. Buyer beware.

Summary: No universal connector
Review: The Tungstein E is a big step up from my PALM m100. But it does not have a universal connector. If I knew that I would have bought the Zire with camera. This product is falls short without that connection.

Summary: A PDA for a Housewife of Average Intelligence?
Review: I have owned my Palm Tungsten E for two months now and am happy with it.

Im a housewife of average intelligence and not a techy. Trying to choose a PDA made my brain hurt. I finally went with the Tungsten E because of the reasonable price and the color and clarity of the screen. In a side-by-side comparison with other similar priced models by other makers, Tungsten E had the nicest screen.

Cons:
Where's the games? Sorry, it doesn't come with even a measily solitare game. Welcome to the world of online shareware(where have you been all my life?). You go to an online site like Palmgear.com and you download a game to try for FREE. If you like it, you buy it. I highly recommend "Bejeweled" the highly addictive puzzle game.

No printed manual-only a help file on the software. I would have preferred something substantial to review for questions without having to print the document out myself.

Lack of accessories available. The Tungsten E was a very popular selling PDA, but many retailers do not offer the accessories. In fact, many websites do not even have the ability to search for accessories by this product's name.

No Hard Case. Personally I want to protect my $200 investment, especially from purse abuse(bouncing around in a purse). But read the reviews on Palm's hard case. Hmmm.

Pros:
Moderately easy to use. If you have never owned a PDA, it takes just a bit of exploration to succeed in loading files to your new PDA. The "quick install" program is very basic and not complicated. The most used programs-calendar, notepad and the address book, are easily mastered in no time.

Potential to do so much. The software available is mind boggling. Not only do I not have to carry around slips of paper with my grocery list and to do list, I can play games while waiting for appointments and I can show off photos of my kids. Those are just the basics. I can play music and watch video clips(so they say-I haven't tried them yet).

In conclusion, I am happy with my purchase and look forward to someday becoming a Techy. But for now I will stick to grocery lists and games. Now if I can only get my PDA to cook, clean and do laundry!

Summary: excellent value, very few compromises
Review: As a past owner of palms and sonys, I compared this against Sony's
current offerings and decided it was the better value,
given my requirement of MP3 player, and no stupid mini keyboard.

Two months later, I remain satisfied with the purchase, it is
an excellent value, and a very snappy performer. Though I would
have preferred a Sony SJ33 with the same speed rating as the
Tungsten E, Sony is no longer offering anything comparable to
the Tungsten E, as far as I can see. Sony seems to be focussed
on putting out expensive and bulky executive toys, and not
real PDAs meant to be actually used as PDAs.

One warning to those upgrading from a previous Sony - BACK UP ALL
DATA BEFORE INSTALLING. Crashes and freezes are possible when
installing Palm software on top of Sony. Best to fully back up
Sony, then deinstall, then do clean install of Palm,
and selectively restore from Sony backup. I installed over
my old Sony files, the T|E crashed when running some Sony apps
that I then had to delete. Once cleaned up, everything was ok,
but that could be a little traumatic for those less proficient.

Watch out for Palm's hardcase option, I found it to be a waste
of money at 40$. It is hard to use, too bulky and heavy, and
quickly scratched the lettering off the top of the Tungsten.
