Rating: Summary: Worthwhile upgrade Review: I wasn't convinced I needed to upgrade from my Visor Deluxe, but after reading some of the reviews I decided to go ahead and buy The Tungsten. I figured even if it wasn't that great at least it was smaller and had more memory than the Visor. I mean for <$200 how great could it be? I paid more for the Visor 3 years ago. The first time I turned it on and saw the display I gasped. It looked like a computer, not a PDA. The screen is really awesome. There is NO comparison between it and the Visor's. The color and contrast make it much easier to read, but that's not the only great thing about this PDA. It's fast, pretty small, stylish, and it plays MP3's. I never had an MP3 player, but now there is no need to spend $100 or more on one. The output is plenty loud, even on planes, and the sound quality is pretty good- louder than I would ever want to listen to. The SD card means you can store as many songs as your budget allows- just make sure you have a card reader since the upload time through the hotsync cable is really slow. The cable is a standard USB that fits my camera- no need to buy an extra hotsync cradle for work. Plus it will charge when it's hooked up too. The bad: The only thing I am not crazy about is the case since it tends to collect scratches. That's it- No regrets!
Rating: Summary: just a note Review: (note: I've had mine for about a month now.) Everyone is reading the below review (incl. my friends) and thinks this is in a plastic shell- so they are not buying it because of that. However, it is actually thin, buffed steel (hence the amazingly durable plastic comment.) Look at the edges, where the speakers open up, and where it folds over. Even take a knife and cut into it! What I like: -Traveling (and charging) with the standard miniusb cable. -Great as an mp3 player (use aeroplayer) -I downloaded updated high-res, color versions of my old software and it's wonderfully easy on my eyes. -The photo album is great, I put 500+ pictures on their to show off :) -Came with tons of useful software -Fold-over flap is elegant and protects it well (esp. since I keep it in my back pocket, sit on it even- without problems.) That's the main reason I bought this instead of the other choices actually :p -Has enough memory that I stored ALL of my apps, dictionaries, and databases on the internal memory.. even avantgo (which I adore.)
Rating: Summary: Easy on the Eyes! Review: After using a Handspring Visor for the Last 4-5 years I couldn't believe how much less my vision was straining to read the screen! The color display is brilliant compared to the old monchrome versions...well worth the $$$$ price tag.I originally paid $$$$$ for the B&W Visor when it 1st was introduced. I was worried about the Tungsten E's compatibility with Mac's OS X operating system but it has intergrated nicely!;The only criticism would be the Online manual which is hard to navigate through.
Rating: Summary: Has it all! Review: Fast, compact, lots of memory, well designed. It's a steal and makes my life alot simpler.
Rating: Summary: Good price for a lot of power Review: I applaud Palm's decision to give us a low cost way into the Tungsten family. It's missing the universal connector but all of the Tungsten power is there, along with a really nice display. I would highly recommend getting an SD card to make full use of this device. In fact the MP3 player requires it. Spend the extra $70. You can fit a fair amount of music, a ton of ebooks, and a bunch of apps on a 256MB card. If you are concerned with a lack of Bluetooth or WiFi, keep in mind that Bluetooth SD adapters are on the market and 802.11B cards are coming soon.
Rating: Summary: Treat yourself! Review: If you're thinking of upgrading from an older black & white Palm, treat yourself. I had a much loved Palm 105 that was perfectly adequate. However, the Tungsten E is a joy. The display is superb and the range of features extraordinary for the price. My only gripe and it's a minor one is that if you're used to six weeks' life from AAA batteries, you have to get used to a weekly recharge of the lithium battery. Palm claim that 'average' usage is 20 minutes/day. If you use it for much longer than 20 minutes, you'll be recharging frequently. Palm really do have a winner here.
Rating: Summary: Irritating Review: I had a Handspring Visor for 3-1/2 years. It was an excellent product, very user friendly. It felt like it was designed by humans for humans. I was a skilled user of Grafitti. Recently I got a Zire 71 - four-five years after the Visor, the Graffitti system has de-evolved. It was so DREADFUL I had to return it - twice. For instance, the moment you put the stylus to the screen, it was interpreted as a dot before you had a chance to continue. Now I purchased Tungsten E, and while Graffiti 2 doesn't get as confused, it is still much worse that what good ol' Handspring had to offer. Why would Palm alter the way certain letters are written, instead of - if the geeks at Palm absolutely HAD to tinker with it - adding multiple versions of the same character? The way "a" "r" or "t" were written weren't "broke". Why on earth mess with it? After 3 recently owned products from the new Palm family, I also noticed that screen brightness is inconsistent. My Tungsten E is as bright at full brightness settings as the Zire 71 was at half the setting (same hardware). My other Zire 71 screen had a greenish tint. I give it 2 stars only because one would expect more of Palm today. I would have given it 5 stars - back in 1999. A perfect example of how the NEW is not always better.
Rating: Summary: How many things can you name that can be held in the palm? Review: Is this actually palm sized?.. that's brilliant. Does it get any better than that? I mean carrying around your pc is just ludicrous. If I had a big important job or if I had lots-o-cash or was just smart and cool as heck I'd already have one but... I'll just stick to my television remote to fill my busy palm.
Rating: Summary: quick note Review: No, it's actually a thin, buffed steel casing on the device (look at the edges or take it apart if you don't believe me.) That's why it's so sturdy... and looks so HOT :)
Rating: Summary: Great for first time Palm users Review: My husband recently got me the Tungsten E for my birthday and I absolutely love it. I don't know how I kept track of everything before I got it. It is so easy to use. The features are pretty much self-explanatory; no need to read a huge manual. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a handheld.
