Summary: Very poor quality hardware
Review: I've owned a Treo 90 for just over six months now, and I've had to return it four times. Once for a broken keyboard, and the last three times because the backlight failed on the color screen.

I'm disappointed because I liked the small size, the handy little keyboard, and the flip-cover that protects the keyboard and screen. Unfortunately all that nice design is fouled up by the really lousy hardware quality.

My previous handheld, an old Palm III, lasted years and years. In fact when I upgraded to the Treo the old Palm was still working and I foolishly gave it away to a friend. Shouldn't have done that--now I'm gonna have to buy a replacement for the Treo 90.

Summary: Two Strikes And You're Out
Review: The Treo 90 has some great features: great screen color and resolution - compact size - built in keyboard. My wife loved it until the backlight went out after about a month of light usage. After a fair amount of hassle she was able to get a replacement unit from the store she purchased the original from. Shortly after getting the second new unit, it began to turn on by itself - just sitting on the table! No wonder she was frustrated at constantly needing to recharge it. It's hard to tell how often it turned itself on and off when in her purse. Also when it was in use, she had it "toggle" between programs for no apparent reason. Today we ended her struggles and returned it once again - This time for a new Palm - M515. Sorry Handspring; you've got a good idea, but it sure needs some work!

Summary: keyboard yes, but.....
Review: Having a great deal of trouble with on screen scribbling, I jumped at the chance to own a handheld with a built in keyboard. I bought a Treo 90 from the Handspring website the moment they were available. I wish I would have waited. There is nothing spectacular about this unit outside of the keyboard. As an organizer it functions just fine.

However, there are far too many irritating design flaws in the way this unit was constucted. For one, there is NO WAY to keep this unit from turning on and off in your purse or pocket. You can lock the keyboard, but that doesn't have any effect on the on/off button on top of the unit. The only case available for this unit leaves the on/off button exposed. Even loud, sudden noises turns this thing on. This drains the built in battery which only lasts about an hour of constant use anyway. You can't even carry extra batteries, their built in. There is also the small but bothersome tendency for the stylus to fall out of its holder. The stylus is smaller that others and can only be replaced by purchasing them from the Handspring website ($$$) for shipping).

Wait tell version 2.0 of this unit comes out. Hopefully they will have corrected these problems by then.

Summary: BEWARE OF BACKLIGHT!
Review: This was a fantastic PDA in the beginning. I had evolved from the Visor, to the Edge to the Treo. The main reason I jumped from the Edge to the Treo is because the backlight went out on the Edge, so I thought I would upgrade to a color screen.

I loved it until the backlight on the Treo went out! It was completely useless without it. I was able to get it replaced with a new unit, but only because I bought an extended warranty and had to raise a fuss with customer service.

Other than the backlight issues, the unit is wonderful. I find that the keys are a little too close together to make the keyboard funtional. RecoEcho is a great hack to download to write on the screen. If the backlight holds up on the new unit, I would highly recommend it. If not, I will abandon Handspring for good.

Summary: Nice concept but useless
Review: The color screen and keyboard are nice, functional and a big improvement over the classic palm(although the keyboard implementation works somewhat better on the blackberry because a trackwheel lets you keep your thumbs on the keyboard, while the Treo still requires occasional use of a stylus). Unfortunately, the battery life is abysmal. Handspring claims the batteries are sufficient for 10-days of normal use. My experience is that I'm lucky if I can get a day and a half, and I'm by no means a power user (I can go two weeks on my Palm V). Not terribly useful for a three day road trip. I'd stay away from the Treo if you travel, or are away from a charge more than every couple of days (or don't want to carry cables).

Summary: no OS X
Review: My first PDA. I really like the keyboard. The size is nice too. It does support older MAC OS 9. But I'm into OS X now and it seems the little treo is not. So it's going back tomorrow morning.

Summary: A great PDA!
Review: I recently upgraded from a Palm IIIxe. Wanted color and a way to not have to use a stylus all the time. The Treo 90 is it! I've not experienced the stylus issues, but did have a backlight problem, which Handspring quickly resolved by sending me a replacement. No problems since! Aftermarket software One Button Pro helps utilize the buttons and reduce the need for the stylus.

The datebook+ is a great advance over the Palm. The extra memory is great as well.

The only thing missing now is a flip case that has a belt clip. I have a belt clip case from Handspring, but you have to take the Treo out of the case to use it. Belkin has one on their site, but no word on when it will be available.

Overall, a great PDA!

Summary: Defective products - backlights
Review: Nice product - until the backlight on the screen died.

Handspring has been manufacturing Treos with defective backlights. Please be aware that if this problem occurs, they will only send you a REFURBISHED Handspring to replace your defective one - which they don't mention on their website (http://support.handspring.com/esupport/forms/hsResolutionView.jsp?ResolutionId=8433#6).

Either that, or they push it back on Amazon to send you a new one - with possibly the same defect.

I don't want a used Handspring - I paid for a new one.

Handspring needs to distribute products that work - simple enough, right?

Summary: So Long Palm!
Review: I've had a Treo 90 a little over 90 days now and for a Palm device it has performed well. It is however, not without it's limitations. The 12 bit screen is less than appropriate to deal with Powerpoint Presentations, very grainy at best. The problem with the stylus no longer staying in the slot after a few days of heavy use is quite inexcusable. This can be fixed by applying a few drops of super glue to the top plastic piece. Still, for this price one should be able to depend on the stylus being held securely in the holder instead of being lost somewhere on the sidewalk. No doubt it is very small and light and will be very useful to me when performing work outside when weight is a factor. Nonetheless, I was recently given an iPAQ 3955 which will be my primary PDA by virtue of it's massive capabilities. If you don't need much more than an organizer to make notes and maintain a calendar, then this is what you are looking for. For a more functional machine that works as well as plays and does both extremely well, go with a Pocket PC. After having a Pocket PC there is no going back to Palm OS.

Summary: Totally Unbelieavable- I Like Mine.
Review: I was finally going to shelf my PalmIIIxe and upgrade to a newer model Palm. I researched what devices would best fit my needs for what I do and also be able to support programs I would need on my new device. I was also excited to see a PDA with a keyboard on it. My Treo is sleek, small and for my super liking, it is lightweight. I have never been so excited about a PDA before but I just can't get over how great my TREO 90 is. I enjoy a color screen, great battery life and a keyboard. I have had it over a month now and I haven't had any issues or challenges. I am also enjoying the DateBook+ feature. I feel I have benefited positively from my Treo 90. Thanks.
