Rating: Summary: So Far, So Good! Review: I just purchased my Treo 90 last week. What a great price for such a feature packet PDA. I have previously owned a Palm V and a Compaq IPAQ(color). I have to say that the Treo 90 has advantages over both! The Palm V was great, but obviously low on memory at 2mb. The IPAQ had a brilliant color screen, but it was so large that I found myself using it less and less as time passed. It was too bulky to carry in my pocket. The Treo 90 is really small and has a nice plastic protective flip cover. It can easily be carried in a shirt pocket or pants pocket without even noticing it's there. The keyboard is very easy to use. I have very large hands and have no problem at all using it. I also occassionally use the handwriting recognition software that came with it. 90% of the time it's the keyboard. The color screen is very nice. Not as brilliant as the IPAQ, but very acceptable. The backlight works great in practically any conditions. My requirements were pretty simple: 1. small size 2. color display 3. plenty of memory 4. keyboard (I don't like handwriting recognition) The Treo 90 was the only unit that fit all of those requirements. Palm M130 - nice but kind of bulky and only 8mb. IPAQ - too expensive and too big. Sony Clie - very nice but a lot more expensive. The Treo 90 rocks!
Rating: Summary: Great, with the exception of screen resolution Review: If your looking for a great handheld and want to get away from the grayscale B&W screen without the high price that most colors go for... this is the one! My wife liked mine so much, because it is so much easier to view the the old grayscale, that I bought her one for her birthday... now we're a 2 Treo household! The operating system is Palm Powered v4.1 and you can use graffiti writing (on screen) by downloading RecoEcho Plus from Handspring (free) if your an avid screen writter, such as myself. This is a lightweight, slim PDA that easily fits in your shirt pocket. I've been using PDA's since the first Palm and love the Treo 90. The only downside is the screen resolution... you can load up pictures, but they are not very clear. As far as MP3's... I have always said there is a tool for every job, and a PDA isn't the right tool, at least as far as I'm concerned.
Rating: Summary: Nice unit except for the screen Review: I've had this unit for about 3 weeks now and I am pretty happy with my purchase. I originally wanted a PDA for just a diary and address book but I am now sold on the other capabilities of this little device. Its especially useful when traveling as I can keep all my hotel/flight etc information in one place. I am also glad I have 16 M of memory as I have used over 10 M already! The Treo 90s good points: 1. Its light enough to carry around in a purse or a coat pocket (especially good for women in my opinion!) 2. The power supply (to recharge the battery) can handle 240 v (important for traveling to Europe Oz etc). 3. The battery life is good. 4. Unlike other ppl I have had no problems with the stylus falling out or the unit turning itself on. The Treo 90s failings: 1. The screen resolution is LOW.. compared to the Sony Clie PEG-SJ30 its just awful. I am annoyed that in Handspring's info sheet on this model they show a lovely color picture on the screen. There is no way a photo would look anything like that on this screen. If you read the small print on the bottom of the sheet they state "screen images simulated". Buyer beware. 2. Home key needs two keystrokes.. don't underestimate how annoying this is! 3. Does not come with a cradle so you have to fuss around with cords all over your desktop. Apart from this I am reasonable happy with the Treo and I would recommend it if reasonably priced.
Rating: Summary: very nice product Review: The Treo 90 is trouble free, fast, very small, light and the built in keyboard works very well for me. The screen is extremely readable and while it isn't the greatest resolution, its a million times better than the B&W front-lit screen I had previous to this. It is always very readable. The color is very adequate even though limited to something over 4,000 colors. Games are a blast.
Rating: Summary: Nice size and weight, design and screen could use work Review: I'll confess that after years of using a Palm IIIx I was excited by the size and weight of the Treo 90. I was also intrigued by the thumpad keyboard. It fits very nicely in a shirt or jacket pocket and the display is nice and bright. But I have some problems with it: 1. As others have noted, it turns itself on much to easily. Many times I've heard the Treo beeping in my pocket or briefcase because it moved and ended up turning on. They keylock feature is a pain. 2. Also as others have noted, the stylus falls out continually. I've had to put a strip of tape around it to give it enough girth to stay put. 3. The screen is quickly becoming outdated. The Sony Clie PEG-SJ30 costs the same or less and has a beautiful 16 bit screen. 4. Some of the most basic Palm features, like search or "home" (i.e, show the application icons), require an annoying multiple keystroke process. These were accomplished with one touch on the non keypad Palm OS devices. 5. Entering punctuation or numbers via the keypad is horrible. Very tedious, again requiring the extra push of the little blue button (functions like an "alt" button on a computer keyboard). 6. The Treo 90 doesn't (or didn't when I bought minein August 02) ship with the capability of recognizing Grafitti. Major drawback in my opinion, though many may disagree with this. 7. Believe it or not, its easy to drop, especially with dry winter hands, as its so light and smooth (done it many times...). All told, I'd rather have the Clie and may "upgrade" to it soon.
Rating: Summary: Everyone thinks its the Treo communicator... Review: ...but it's not! It's cuter and smaller and the lid is much more refined. I just wish there was a charging cradle that fit it well, and a case. All the cases out there are just too big for this little guy.
Rating: Summary: Best for what it does Review: It has its drawbacks but its small size and thumb keyboard have enabled me to get full use out of my PDA. My previous handsprings and others were always too bulky to carry in my pocket or wear on my belt delegating it to the briefcase where it was too often out of handy reach when I needed it most. Battery life is good, screen is OK but not in direct sunlight, cover protects it. I recommend the belt holder by handspring to go with it and protect it. My wish list for it, however, would be a foldable keyboard for more extensive note taking or writing when you want something more than the thumbboard.
Rating: Summary: Nice little handheld Review: I really enjoy using this handheld. It's small and light, but the screen is big and bright. It also comes with 16MB of memory. The screen is protected by the cover so you don't have to waste money buying a bulky cover. The stylus isn't an issue for me personally, as I use a pen which has a stylus tip on it. Typing on the keybaord is really faster than graffiti once you get used to it. But you can always just download graffiti and write on the screen. I don't know why so many people complain about it. I think they should go and try it out at a store before buying it, and then complain about something they could have known about if they just shopped more carefully. Not to mention this little handheld got a lot of great editorial reviews!
Rating: Summary: Treo 90 Needs work Review: I've used the Treo 90 for several months and it needs some work: 1. The power is always on - hit a button and it turns on. 2. The battery is always dead - a result of issue #1 3. The pen falls freely out of its holder - I have bought 4 pens to date. 4. The case is poorly fitting. 5. Even in the leather case it still turns on. What is really frustrating is by snapping the case closed - it turns the power on. 6. The memu (HOME) feature requires two key strokes - make it one key stroke for HOME and two key strokes to turn on the power. Fix the above and the unit is great! Increase the screen resolution and it is perfect. RR
Rating: Summary: Poor Quality, Service and Display Review: I have had my unit since September 6th (Today is 1/1/03). The display went dark after one week. The next unit ceased operation on December 11th and was replaced under the extended warranty. The current unit will not beam and Handspring is refusing to even discuss this matter unless I provide a credit card number for the technicians time. Don't buy this unit unless you want problems. If you do, realize that the extended warranty is a rip off. Between the poor brightness of the screen, the poor quality of the unit and the poor quality of the service I am giving up. I am switching to a Toshiba Pocket PC.
