Summary: Amazing
Review: I bought these in replacement for my OEM headphones I'd been using for about 4 months...
I had read that they were sturdy, and put out good sound. Now That I've tried 'em I have to say: These are amazing.

They can push Techno, Metal, Jazz, Funk, Disco, and Drum and Bass with equal ease.

Skunk Anansi - Charlie Big Potato - No problems, didn't sound amazing
Chocolate Puma - I Wanna Be You (Radio Edit) - Perfect
Pod - Youth of the Nation - The really low end was missing... Not sure why, but this just didn't sound that good.
Don Byron - Furman - So good! So good!
Sheryl Crow - Sweet Rosalyn - Sounds better than home soundsystem? Confused...
Korn - Got the life - It could push it! just BARELY, but it works!
Ben E King - Stand By Me - Sounds like it should.

I have yet to try hooking these up to portable audio, but for my home system late at night, they work like a charm.

I have probably never bought a better pair of headphones, I reccomend these highly.
The SINGLE complaint I have is the low end not going quite as low as I had hoped... It pushes Korn - Got the life, which is essentially my bass test. It also sounds great on what it pushes. It just doesn't go amazingly low. (by amazingly, I mean "can match my 3 12" subs" It doesn't do that. Than again, I don't really expect ANYTHING to match that.) Buy these headphones.

Summary: Best headphones for portables
Review: I've spent quite a lot of time and money trying to find the best headphones to use with my MP3 player -- a Philips model with great sound but not a lot of power. These are by far the best I've tried. Not only do they sound the best but they are the most efficient, meaning that they can be easily driven by just about any portable. Like another reviewer I have the big head problem. However, I found that the comfort can be much improved if you loosen the headband all the way and then tighten it until the fit is just snug.

Summary: Headphones at the head of the class.
Review: I have one very, very minor caveat about these headphones: We have a set of circumaural Sennsies with cloth pads that we bought years ago, and I find those more comfortable. I have the heartbreak of Big Head. I have a really big head. Extraordinarily headroomy up top. The pair with cloth pads is more comfortable.

This is not really a nitpick - I got off cheeeeep, and I still give them five stars.

Summary: Best sounding can for the price!
Review: My second Sennheiser headphone...and this one is twice as good at less than half the price! Perfect treble, detail and excellent bass. Its a supra-aural and very comfortable for prolonged wear...though the top cushion was a bit uncomfortable at start, still very comfy. Got an Excellent rating from Headroom.com for good reasons.
If you want great sound(almost professional grade) for great price, go for it. Comes with handy 3 meter detachable cable.

Summary: Excellent Multi-purpose headphones for the price
Review: First of all, these headphones are very lightweight and comfortable to wear, even for extended periods. They are also very efficient and easily used at home or with a portable, although they really sound their best when used with a headphone amplifier. The sound from these headphones is very clear with excellent bass with well balanced mids and highs. Overall I would say that for the price and portability these headphones are near-perfect. The only thing that I could really think of improving on is the split-Y cord. I personally would have preferred only having one cord, but in this respect I am just nit-picking. :)

Summary: Great sound, great value
Review: I had been looking for a set of headphones for my iPod, ever since I discovered better quality settings for my MP3s. My criteria were:

- Sound; good bass, not too "thumpy", clear treble without distortion, and a full middle for all those singer-songwriters;

- Comfort: had to be comfortable for hours on end.

- Circumaural: I was tired of headphones that either rested on my ears or earbuds up against my ear canals, I wanted "real" cups, or as close as I could get to it;

- Style: I figure, I care about how everything else I wear looks, why not headphones?

- Portability: light, with a light and flexible cord, and a plug either L-shaped or short enough not to ruin an iPod in a pants pocket; and all this for

- less than a hundred US dollars.

I found all these in the HD 497s.

Summary: Great sound, great price, but durability?
Review: I got these for Christmas in 2002. They far surpassed, in sound quality, any headphones I had ever donned. The price had been reasonable and they were very comfortable. About a month ago, however, the left earpiece pad fell off; hardly a week later, the sound started flickering in that half of the headphones, and a few days later I had to spend 10 minutes adjusting the cord for both ears to play, only to be shaken and restart. Hopefully yours will be more durable.

Summary: Quality phones, fairly valued
Review: One of the charms of headphones is that they're a lazy person's no-brainer technology. No programming, digital settings, or instructions are necessary to using, benefitting from, and evaluating the product. Consequently, I now have along with broad experience in cans more of them than I require. The only pair I've been absolutely and completely satisfied with are the Sennheiser PX100's, which can be transported safely in a back pocket and worn and enjoyed interminably. But they do require careful folding and storing, and I thought the top-rated (by Cnet) HD-497's would be handier for my studio work at the radio station.

A few observations about comfort. They're light enough but also just a trifle tight--something you certainly notice after the first hour of wearing them. Any of these phones that sit on the edges of your ears are likely to produce heat and sweat after a limited amount of time. This is as true of the 497's as of my heavier Sony MDR V-600's. For extended listening, the best bets are extremely lightweight phones like the PX100's, which don't sit on the "rim" of the ear, or phones that completely encircle the ear. I've got some heavy, loose-fitting Panasonic RP-HT660's that can be worn for hours because the weight is on your head, not your ears.

I can't speak to the durability factor of the HD-497's, though I'm somewhat surprised to see how tightly-fitting the detachable speaker wires are. Whether they would save you a broken set of headphones in the event of tripping on the cord (I've lost one pair that way) remains to be seen. Also, I've discovered no shorter wires made available by Sennheiser, so the detachability factor appears to be no more than a slight advantage. As for convenience, these phones can't be folded and stored in a little storage bag, like many of their larger competitors, so I wouldn't judge them to be good travelers.

As for the most important consideration, they sound great. Adequate bass (with no sense of artificial "boost," like the more expensive Sony's) and clear, brilliant highs (discernibly brighter than those of the Sony V-600's). They're a tad more efficient (louder) than the PX-100's, and they tend to bring mid-range instruments--the piano, for example--more forward in the mix. Indeed, the sound is transparent, clear and crystalline. Still, I almost prefer the more democratic balance of the PX-100's, which place you mid-center instead of front-center in the concert hall. The HD-497's are great for shorter listening episodes, but for going the distance, give me the PX-100's any day. (They're also 25% less expensive. For that matter, the Sony CD-180's, at one-quarter of the price, compare quite favorably in every respect with the HD-497's, with diminished treble being the major difference.)

Summary: Great headphone for the price
Review: I got this one for about a bit more than a month. Use it on various occasions. Very good sound quality and light weight. It is not the in ear mini ones but the design make them looks cool wearing them. Nothing to complain about. I have not figure out how to detach the cord yet. Thinking of getting a shorter cord on it if possible.
