Review: Only one star and that's just for the design. The sound is tinny at best, the earphones with its square wire ear hanger is just plain uncomfortable. Save your money and get the Sony MDR-EX70LP Earbud Headphones for a little more pocket change.

Summary: Always a First Time
Review: Over the years I have been very lucky with Sony products. I've purchased Sony TVs, VCRs, CD players, an under-the-counter kitchen clock radio, cordless phone and a Walkman. All been quality products which have served me well.Recently the headphones to my Sony Walkman had begun to show their age. Feeling the time was right for a new set and reading a number of positive reviews other than the ones shown here, I picked up the MDR-Q55SL's. To nitpick, if you happen to wear glasses these are not the most comfortable things to wear. It took only a few minutes for me to notice that uncomfortable pressure behind the ears. In fairness, when taking the glasses off the comfort level is better although not great. My taste in music runs from classic rock to country/folk to some soft jazz. Despite Sony's claim that these phones have a "warm" sound, I have found them to be on the shrill side with all the types of music I listen to. The bass response wasn't bad but should be better considering the price. My old Sony phones sounded better at less than half the price. If you listen to music at a low to moderate volume setting, these phones are passable. For those who like to crank the music up once in a while, I'd look to another brand. For the first time in my life I'm disappointed in a Sony product. What's this world coming to!!

Overall, I don't recommend this type of headphones. This is no exception. Go for a different pair of Sony's, particularly Fontopia earbuds or Street Style neckband headphones.

Summary: Best portable sets to date
Review: Sony has come out with a few different versions of these headphones. I know that one of them specializes in rap, another in techno, and another in jazz. These headphones specifically specialize in Hard House/Techno music. I tested this pair thouroughly and all I can say is that these are possibly the best sounding headphones in the price range that are intended for portable use. As far as prices go for portable headphones, this is at the top of the charts. I payed a substantial amount of money for these headphones, but it was all worth the money. The best part of these headphones are the portability, to start... The cable is quite short so there is no dealing with miles and miles of extra cable that you have to put in your pocket. These are just long enough.. at least for me.. I am short - being at 5 feet 6 inches, and I found the length just perfect for me. I found that these headphones fit perfectly in my pocket - that's usefull if you are like me and listen to your music on the go or at school. And with this small form-factor, you also get incredible sound. This is a rarity folks! Channeling of the sound is pretty good with these phones, usually channeling to the correct side with good accuracy. This is nice because usually atleast 10 different sounds are occuring in a techno song. With this portability also comes with some great use of the air for sound quality. It takes in the outside's environment - the air from the outside - to produce the low-end sound. The bass is quite incredible on this unit. Most times on headphones such as these, the bass is way too toned out to have it sound natural. On these headphones, however, it sounds like you are actually listening to it on speakers. What else? Oh yeah, did I mention they look awesome? They are very stylish headphones, one of the reasons being that this was specifically directed towards people that want to look good with their phones on. The finishing on these headphones is nice, the metallic colors almost mesmorizing! :) I can highly recommend these headphones to ANYONE looking for a high-quality portable headphone set for the go - especially techno fans. I can't really recommend these headphones to people that are really picky with their sound quality like me and want to listen to some nice rock music. Since rock is usually more instrumental and more notes are processed, and since techno is usually just all about the beat and the little details, these headphones won't sound the BEST on these Elements of Style headphones - however I would recommend the verison recommended for Jazz music if you want these headphones but listen to rock music. Review: These headphones are slightly more expensive than the averages headphones but then again they are slightly better. The sound quality is great. However there are some concerns customers should know before buying them. The headphones will fit differently on everyone's ear depending on how large or small your ears are. The clip goes behing your ear just like glasses so it might be uncomfortable to wear both glasses and the headphones at the same time. Also the headphones are open air so you will be able to hear what is going on around you. I have bought two pairs of these headphones, the silver and the black/gold. The black/gold leak more music than the silver ones but I have found the leakage only occurs is music is played at a loud volume. The silver barely leaks any music and when it does, it's almost inaudible and will only be detected by someone sitting right next to you. Overally I think the headphones are great and extremly comfortable. I used headphones on a daily basis and these are very durable and comfortable. I love both pairs that I own and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a great pair of headphones.

Summary: Nice look and sound
Review: These headphones sound pretty good, but leak sound. I got them to watch DVDs on the plane with my laptop and it can be annoying to the person sitting next to me. Compared to other portable headsets I have worn, these are by far the most comfortable.
The bass response is very good. DVDs really boom for a portable headset (especially the Two Towers' battle scenes). Finally, they look very cool and retro. They look especially good with my Mac Powerbook.

It takes me more than one try to get them to "clip" on properly, and if I'm doing anything even slightly physically active they tend to fall out of place. There is absolutely no sound isolation either way... so I can hear everything around me, and everyone around me can hear what I'm listening to. Finally, after about three weeks of not-so-heavy use (30 minutes/day, maybe), they started buzzing every time I pumped somewhat heavy bass through them. And by the way, the bass wasn't so good to begin with. For headphones supposedly "designed for the house and trance fan," these are a huge disappointment.

Summary: pros and cons
Review: This headphones is a more expensive unit compared with other comparable products. Is this worth it? It depends. Among the headphones that I have tried so far, this one definitely sounds different. The frequency response is rather flat, meaning the bass and the treble do not get boosted as much. I think over the years my ears got so used to bass/treble boost that I first felt strange listening music thru this headphone; music sounded airier. Also, the sounds get dispersed across the left and right better than the other cheaper headphones. This makes possible to hear the details of each sound element better. I was actually amazed how much detail I was missing with other headphones. With a bit of boost, the bass sounds and subtle detail of sound can blow you away. I would think those are pros depending on your tastes. Now, the cons. Sometimes I feel the bass and vocal sounds do not get "centered" correctly; I tend to hear them a bit toward the right than usual. I don't know why this happens, but I can assure it's not my ears! Also, the vocal doesn't come out very clearly with this headphones. If you listen to a lot of vocal music, you might be dissapointed. For instrumental music, it works just fine. Another thing is that the ear clips are not as comfortable as a set of Sony headphones that I used to own prior to getting this one. Also, by construction, this one isn't suitable for listening in a very noisy environment. You can hear too much noise from outside. Overall, I have a reservation about recommending this headphones for casual listeners. If you know what you are getting, this may be an interesting headphones to try.
