Rating: Summary: Awesome range, great sound Review: I tested the range the first day I used the phone; I was able to still use it not just outside, but across the street and three houses down. The speakerphone is loud and clear on the handset (an awesome feature, one that now I can't live without). The base unit's speakerphone is a little muffled, but acceptable. Since our baby monitor runs at 900 Mhz, and our computer network runs at 2.4 Ghz, this phone is perfect for us at 5.8 Ghz. Did I mention it also looks great?
Rating: Summary: Excellent Product Review: This by far the best cordless phone we have ever purchased. I read a lot of reviews before buying it and was concerned about range and quality, but we have had no problems - I think the folks that experienced problems had interference issues because the sound quality is crystal clear and the handset speakerphone quality is excellent as well. We initially set the base unit in our home office near the computer and experienced some noise issues - once we relocated the base in other room and put the handset and charger in the home office the sound quality has been near perfect. The menu is easy to understand without having to read the entire owners manual. The touch buttons work well - not like our old Panasonic 900MHz that gave us problems from the start. I highly recommend this phone.
Rating: Summary: Greatest phone you can buy !!!! Review: I read all the reviews before buying it and I was kind of worried about the range but trust me lot of these people are looking for an ham radio not a phone!!!! This phone works great and the range is perfect for a normal family house. My house is a 3 level one and I set up the base in the basement ( that's where I have my office ), and the handsets one on each floor ( I bought an extra one ) and the range is perfect, no static, no loss of connection to the base. Also this phone has great sound that I never heard before in a cordless, someone said that you hear a little echo in the handset and is true but is not bothering the conversation at all. The sound correction is a cool feature even if I don't use it. The other really great feature is the speakerphone on the handset. I guess a lot of people who wrote reviews did buy this phone for a office use and got a little upset figuring out that this is just a normal home phone cordless. Somebody complained about the fact that if you save a phone number in the base phone book and try to recall it from the handset ( or the other way around ) is not there ( the phone book are not shared ) but that is actually good if you are going to have different components of the family using the single handsets. In my case I use the base most and my wife use the handset on the top floor so she has memorized her own "girlfriends" numbers on the handset phone book that, trust me, I don't need to find in the base phone book that I use for work !!! All around a nice and smart phone, working fine in my case.
Rating: Summary: Great Toy Review: I baught this phone to replace my other VTech 900mhz because my mother wanted a phone with CID (Caller ID). The phone is very clear and you don't pick up any interference. I like the intercom feature where from the headset you can call up another headset in the house or the base and talk to that person. The dislikes I have with it is the seperate headset to the base. Too many things to plug in; the headset charger in one outlet and the base to the phone jack and an outlet. Also from time to time, the phone automaticly comes on when it was never in use for a couple of days. When I pick up the phone it's the operator on the other line.
Rating: Summary: fades out Review: returned the unit for refund.six feet away from the base reception faded in ad out.
Rating: Summary: Confusion on frequency Review: I haven't bought it, ignore my rating. However: I notice most people say it doesn't use 2.4, and one person says it does. I went to the VTech web site and it says: "One of the key elements that sets the VTech 5831 apart from other cordless phones is its unique 5.8 GHz - 2.4 GHz dual-band design. This advanced communications architecture gives the base unit the ability to transmit in the more powerful 5.8 GHz frequency band. In turn, while the handset transmits in the more energy-efficient 2.4 GHz band." So, it does use 2.4, and for an apparently good reason (battery). I use wireless networking, so I'm concerned about 2.4 inteferring. I may end up getting an old 900mhz before they stop making them!
Rating: Summary: excellent choice Review: The speaker phone quality of the base and handsets are perfect. I was able to drive around the block with my handset without any breakup of signal while talking. The base is the only thing that needs a phone jack so you don't need umpteen phone jacks in your home or office for the same phone line. This phone is perfect for someone who relies on cordless phone durability and good battery life. I have never had one of the hand sets run out of juice. I have had this item for over 6 months now. I used to have the newest and greatest Panasonic. I tried Panasonic 3 different times. Dealing with warranties got old real fast. The features were great but the durability was nil. These VTech phones are awesome. They are light years better than any competing cordless phone.
Rating: Summary: Better than an 2.4 ghz, not as good as expected Review: Based on earlier reviews listed here I bought this phone. I use the speakerphone all the time at my desk so I was looking for a really good speakerphone. I can hear people just fine on the base unit, but people still say it has the "down the well" sound to it from their end. I will say on the positive side that the speakerphone does clearly pick up speech from several feet away. I also like the speakerphone ability on the cordless set which is in the other room. There is also a volume adjustment that helps amp up the sound when I need it. The range on the cordless unit is about twice what I was getting on my 2.4 ghz unit - I can go all over the house and the length of my back yard so that's far enough for me. It would be nice if there were a headset jack on the phone base though for when I wanted to make the calls more private.
Rating: Summary: Nice Design - Poor Functionality Review: I love the look of this phone and the menus are easy to use. But I am really disappointed with the overall functionality. The base unit seemed like a great idea. It has a nice touchpad, caller id display and its small size is great for a cluttered desktop. Unfortunately, the headset only plugs into the handset. To make a call from the base you have to use the speakerphone. I made one phone call with the base station - and quickly learned that speakerphone quality still [isnt good].... regardless of what the manufacturer claims. At this point, the base station serves no purpose for me. If I don't return the phone, I will hang the base station on the wall and never use it again. The handset is nice, but the "sound select" feature doesn't work with a headset. I don't understand the reason for having both a digital and analog time display on the front of the phone.... The analog clock face is difficult to read - and there is no option to show only the digital clock - so I turned the clock display off. I think this phone is better suited for a large family that will use the intercom feature and wants to add several phones to one base station. I purchased this unit for my home office - and have discovered that it doesn't have enough functionality that I need to warrant the price of the product. I specifically would like to see more features added to this unit including: caller ID voice announce and/or caller ID matching to phone book, an answering machine in the base station, a headset jack in the base station, an attachment to tilt the base station upward for better viewing of the display when the unit is placed on a desktop, distinctive ring attached to phone book entries. Overall a great looking phone with worthless functionality - just not enough features for the price.
Rating: Summary: Better than Uniden Review: I bought the Uniden TRU5865 cause of its good looks and "high quality", what a mistake. I returned it due to poor sound quality and bought the Vtech VT-5831. What a phone! It not only looks good, but it performs as well. The sound is good and the speakerphone is exceptional. The form and fit are all good, and the features are more than I need. I read the reviews that complained of poor reception and a lot of static; they should be glad they didn't buy the Uniden. Anyway, they must have gotten defective phones because mine works great. Good phone Vtech.
