Rating: Summary: Stellar phone! Review: This is the only cordless phone I have ever used that was truly worth it's price. The reason? Well built. A very sturdy handset, solidly constructed, with just enough heft that it can be handled without having the occasional fumble because it was too light (maybe it's just me). I never dropped mine, but I'm sure it could take a couple of drops on concrete before it conked out. Another awesome feature is the dual speakerphones. Convenient for answering and talking when I'm doing dishes, or happen to be in the middle of a video game or the like for the cordless, and the speakerphone on the base makes answering calls when I'm in bed easier than nailing the snooze on my alarm clock, plus the mic's pickup and clarity are stellar...a speakerphone you can actually use without standing on top of it. Also, living in a rural area, lightning stikes usually take out a spanking new cordless the first time at my home. I hated rushing to unplug my cordless phones everytime I heard a rumble. That rarely did good because they would fry whenever I wasn't home to do it. I took a huge chance on this phone with it's retail price, which I paid when it first came out, and decided to see if it would hold up to a storm while it was still in warranty. Remarkably, this sucker lasted three years before meeting it's maker yesterday. I'm so pleased with its performance I got the exact same model as a replacement (...). I never even considered a newer model. Must buy!
Rating: Summary: ok phone Review: the speakerphones are the plus for this model. They are clear and loud enough and the other side can hear, unlike other panasonic 2.4 ghz models. the answering machine is also great and is very usefull. however there are problems with this phone. first of all its not spread spectrum. Perhaps that is why i dont seem to find the sound quality particularly clear (drawint to radio as an example: it sounds like an AM channel instead of FM). also the phone is slow. it seems to lag a little behind when i dial in the numbers. in addition, all the rest of my phones in my house ring at least once before this phone begins to ring, and if you pick up the phone too quickly (right when it rings for the first time), the phone is non functional for 2-3 seconds for some odd reason (i know this isnt a defective phone because i returned it for another and it did the same thing).
Rating: Summary: More Battery Woes and C.S. Flack Review: I have had this phone 4 weeks and the battery is now not holding a charge past one bar. Turn on the cordless phone to make a call and the battery konks out completely. This follows similar problems other reviewers have experienced. Still, Panasonic wants the consumer to purchase a new battery at their expense for a product that should be under warranty and is obviuosly sub par from comparative reviews. ...
Rating: Summary: The Worst Cordless...... Review: I always had clicks and drop outs with this phone since day one. Now that i have my phone over the cable this cordless has only gotten worse. If your not standing 2 feet from it your caller will not hear you. If I had a choice I would go back and buy a AT&T phone. Never had a problem in the 8 years that I used it.... I recommend that you do not purchase this product.
Rating: Summary: Baffled By Bad Reviews Review: I have had my 1743 about 2 weeks now.I am confused by some of the bad reviews.I have had none of the problems that some of the other people have reported. The sound is loud enough on the handset as well as the 2 speakerphones.I haven't heard any stactic or noticed drop-outs.The phone has not disconnected anyone.Everyone has told me that I am coming through loud and clear on their end.The battery has not needed recharging yet so I'm wondering if these people got the same phone I did,or did they all get defective models?I would highly recommend this phone to anyone looking for alot of good features at a good price. The phone I bought was on clearance and I paid only seventy dollars for it.
Rating: Summary: Terrible reception in my home Review: This phone has a TERRRIBLE reception in my home. Ten feet from the base and behind a 4 inces separation wall, conversation gets chunky. Fifteen feet from the base and behind a slightly thicker wall, I can't hear anything at all. Suprisingly enough I gave it to a friend of mine in the same building and it works great in her home. All other features are good.
Rating: Summary: Great phone, lots of Features, could use some volume Review: I too, spent a lot of time researching phones and choose this one. My last 2.4 was unusable with the microwave, so I definietly wanted a 900 MHz. It's a nice phone, the only problem is the volume control for the handset. The minimum is barely audible and the max. is what I would consider a min on any other phone. With the speakerphone on either the handset or the base unit, the volume has a great range, but through the normal earpiece, its a little too quiet. I should mention we have 2 young children and a loud dog, so volume control is a requirement. Other that this 1 issue, it seemed like a great phone, packed with features.
Rating: Summary: A good phone let down by poor audio quality Review: I purchased this phone because it recieved high praise from consumer reports, and generally favorable reviews on this website. I was delighted by the feel, built quality, and features. The speakerphone for both the base and for the hand-help part is a particulary clever and useful feature. The range is excellent and the quality of the audio while listening is fine. Why then, one might ask, am I giving it only 3 stars and in fact returning the phone? Because the of a very fundemental and grevious flaw: the quality of the audio of played-back messages is appallingly bad. It sounds as if the callers were speaking through a plastic cup. It is difficult sometimes to make out what is being said. Indeed, my wife said it sounds like the teacher on the Peanuts cartoons. This compounds the problem one already has with callers using cell phones. However, it is not the source of in-coming calls that is the problem. I've called the phone and left messages from known high-quailty lines, and the sound is still garbled. Indeed, the best way to decribe it is to say that it sounds highly compressed, in the same way that some internet phone systems used to sound. My old phone was a Sony and it used tape to record message. The sound quality was excellent. Alas, it broke. I just hope the poor quality of the audio from this new phone is not an inevitable concommitant of chip-recorded messages, but is instead unique to the Panasonic. I'll test other phones to see.
Rating: Summary: Good features, bad quality Review: After much research, I bought this phone for its features and for its reasonable price. Overall, it operated well in the beginning. However, within a month, our cordless phone woes began (with this phone). During conversations, the phone would just click and click to the point where I could not hear the person on the other end of the phone and they could not hear me. This began to happen more and more during a phone conversation. I called Panasonic for assistance and customer no-service told me to send it to them (at my expense) and they would see what they could do and call me with a repair estimate. This, after holding for MORE than 20 minutes. The phone was only a month old and I did not want to have to go buy another phone just to replace the one I had just purchased while it was in the shop so I took it back and got a new one (the same kind). The new phone did the exact same thing. As an added bonus, the phone would not hold a charge. I took it back to get the 2.4 version of this phone only to have the same problems plus even less time to a charge. For example, the phone would be completely charged prior to a 10 minute conversation and completely out of charge after the conversation. I also charge my phone completely on the first charge in order to set the battery memory correctly. The phone is just technical unsound. I took this phone back and got a Vtech. So far, so good. But, we are only on the first month.
Rating: Summary: after further review... Review: This is still a darn good phone and answering system. The sound quality hasn't changed after several months of use. The answering machine is very reliable. I had to reprogram the time date thingy and it is shockingly easy to do. The only weird thing, once in a while the phone will just lose its connection. It may happen when you are trying to answer it, too. This has happened 3 times over a few months. It just cuts out and has to be unplugged and plugged back in to reset it. But then it is fine. It isn't just my phone, either. A friend got the same one and says hers does it too. Otherwise it is very reliable and we are glad to have it.
