Summary: Excellent Performance - Exceeded my Expectations!
Review: I read through the considerable number of reviews on the Gigaset suite of products before buying this unit. I almost bought a different phone because of the wide range of experiences with these phones. After careful consideration, I bought the 2402 and couldn't be happier with this product. I live in a three story home, with a reasonably large yard. The home was built in the '30's and several rooms don't have phone jacks. Consequently, when I found out about the Siemens cordless systems, it sounded perfect. The thought of having several phones without needing to install wiring was very appealing. We used to have a single 900 mhz cordless phone, which was never where we needed it when it was needed. And after two Sony 900 mhz, and the new Panasonic 2.4 ghz died on us, my wife and I wanted a phone that was going to both perform and last.

With that background, the Siemens system has been fabulous. The range, battery, and clarity performance are all as good or better than the Sony and Panasonic phones that we've used in the past. The features are SIGNIFICANTLY better! The Siemens handsets have very intuitive menus and are very nicely styled. The range and clarity of the handsets have been flawless. The base unit is hidden away in a closit on the third floor, and we get a perfectly clear signal on every level of the house, as well as our yard, which extends at least 150 feet away from the base. I replaced the batteries with Kodak NiMh rechargables, and battery performance has been great - we've not run out of battery power once. Although, the supplied NiCd batteries weren't a problem either.

I read about some issue with DSL incompatibility, but we have not had a problem even though our main telephone wire also carries DSL service. We simply plugged the base in and it worked. One of the other reviews talks about hold being an issue, but this easily fixed by properly configuring the privacy feature. My single complaint is that the handsets are too thin to cradle with my shoulder (probably a bad habbit anyway.) The good news is that the handset has a built in plug for a headset, which we bought when we ordered the system from Amazon (check out the Plantronics units.) And the headset turns out to be infinitely more comfortable than cradleing the handset anyway.

In short, this system has completely exceeded my expectations and I couldn't be happier with this purchase!

Summary: Good system, but only lasts so long...
Review: We've had the Gigaset 2420 with 3 wireless units for almost 3 years now. The battery life on the wireless hand sets has been terrible all along, and we've even tried changing the batteries. Now, one of the wireless base stations has starting to die on us. The conversation begins fine, and barely lasts for 20 seconds or so. The quality of voice starts to stutter and gets really..really choppy. Finally to the extent that one has to drop the call. Although its out of warranty, but for the of this system, one would not expect such a poor quality from such an expensive set. Our much inexpensive phones from other manufacturers are still working flawlessly.

I would NOT recommend this system to anyone.

Summary: Great Quality and Clarity
Review: I purchased this phone about 1 month ago and have to say that it has operated flawlessly. Set up of the system was easy and the LED displays guide you through the menu choices. The menu's are very intitutive and I only had to use the manual once to get the remote units registered with the base. The system has unbelivable clarity and great features such as phone directory upload feature. I set up my personal directory on one of the remote handsets and uploaded it to the other 3 units. The base unit is in the corner of my home and I have had no drop-outs or fuzzy connections. I've used the phones near operating microwaves, washer/dryer, even in the basement near my furnace without any interference. I have also used it outside of my home up to 150 ft away without any problems. I highly recommend this unit - the best I've ever used.

Summary: poor support from Siemens for this set as it is discontinued
Review: DO NOT buy a refurbished set. Mine lasted just past the 90 day return policy and stopped working. Siemens are not interested in fixing it.

Summary: Much Promise, equal Disappointment
Review: I bought this system for both my home and my office. The many features were definately a selling point since my business and home are on 2 floors. My staff was happy as could be to stop running up the steps to tell us about calls. The system also offered great flexibility since the staff could walk around with the small handsets clipped to them and receive calls throughout the building. But the systems flaws showed up quickly. I bought the system and 6 handsets for the office less than 1 year ago. I have one handset that still works amd one tht works but has the 5 button missing on it. Durability is not a strong point.

On the other hand it works absolutely grreat in my house. Paging, intercom and call transfer are pretty neat to have in your home. Also the 2 line capability is a definite plus. The base unit for my home is under a couch and reception is good anywhere you go.

For home use 4-5, for small office 0-1

Summary: Don't waste your money!!!
Review: I've owned the base station and four handsets (six if you include the warranty replacements). The handsets are absolutely worthless. They don't stay charged, they click and pop while you're using them and the LED display goes out within the first year. Siemens is still in the cordless phone business, but they won't get another dime out of me! Don't waste your money!!!

Summary: Refurbished - You get what you pay for.
Review: I have used Amazon.com for other purchases and have been completely satisfied with their products and services up until I wanted to expand the # of 2400 giga-sets I have on my Siemens phone system. I ordered 2 after market refurbished units in January 2003, $$ each, of which only 1 worked. I sent it back and it was replaced with another failing unit, which was replaced with yet another failing unit. I am tired of the RMAs, shipping charges, poor products & service.
Amazon.com is great for books, CDs, DVDs, etc.. but stay away from the refurbs.

Summary: Horrible Build Quality
Review: I really enjoyed the Gigaset system (base unit with answering machine and one handset) for about 15 months. Over the last few months, however, one handset had become progressively worse with dropped calls and fading while talking (it became unusable a few weeks ago based on comments from others that they couldn't hear me). A few days ago the second handset started to show the same symptoms! This is unacceptable given the price of this system.

I have owned a number of Panasonic and AT&T cordless phones over the years and only stopped using them to upgrade, not due to build quality. Siemens is the first cordless system I've had to abandon due to product failure (and the most expensive I've ever owned). Sadly, the Siemens phones are made in the USA (I guess we cannot produce quality electronics in our country any longer).

Well, I'm now the happy owner of a vtech 5831 (speaker phone base unit and expansion handset included - with expansion of up to 5 add'l handsets). I know it's early but I did my homework on vtech and feel much more confident given their reputation. While researching I learned that vtech produces AT&T labeled phones and both "brands" are much more highly regarded than Siemens.

Check the reviews and you'll see that the vtech 5831 is an outstanding system (especially compared to Siemens); let's just hope it lasts longer.

Summary: So so phone
Review: I have to say the phones feature set is pretty nice and I do like the ability of expanding the same model thoughout the house with only one base station. I will however say that the couple of refurbished models i have purchased in the past have been nothing but problems. All of them seem to exhibit the same problem after a few months of use. The phones themselves start to lose their ability to keep a charge and even giving it over a day of charging will only give you about 15 minutes of talk time. Please note this is after going through 3 different types of rechargable batteries that are said to work in the book. I have come to the conclusion that the handsets are really the only problem but aside from that the phone works great. I have good reception from within the house and outside but if you choose to buy a refurb beware as most places will only give you 30 days before your warranty expires.

Hope this helps,
-Duff
