Summary: Always searches for channels
Review: Has a nice feature set, but beware. Like the other reviewers, my phone sporadically and frequently goes into channel search mode, which breaks up phone conversations. Intolerable. I've had cheaper cordless phones by other manufacturers that were completely reliable (e.g., Toshiba). In fact, this was my first disappointment with cordless phones.

Summary: Would give it less than one star if I could
Review: I bought this phone quite a while ago. It was great at first, but now the jog dial has just gone crazy. The slightest touch causes it to jump wildly (or not move at all), rendering it close to useless. I rarely get channel searching or static as some others have mentioned.

Summary: Not a good choice
Review: I have an older model Sony cordless phone and love it, so I bought this newer model too. Unfortunately, I had to return it. The outgoing message is very poor. Also, the autoscan feature is of no use when you encounter static during a call. I would recommend buying a phone that has a manual channel button.

Summary: Good News/Bad News
Review: I have had this phone for just over two years. There are some good and some NOT so good features regarding this phone/message machine.
The good part is the ease of the built in telephone directory which can store up to 50 numbers. I always had clear connections and no problems with the batteries (still have the original). I could talk for over an hour and not get a low battery signal.
The bad part is that with ANY power outage, the date and time setting had to be reset. This would happen often enough that I just kept the instruction manual underneath the phone base for easy reference on how to reset. The machine would also count every incoming message, even if the caller hung up and not leave one (like a telemarketer)-so at times I came home to find I had seven messages or so, but after playing them back found no actual message was left.
Last Sunday (for no reason) the phone handset display began to alternately flash "Searching for Channel" and "Channel Found" even though I was sitting next to the base. I disconnected the unit and reset it (per Sony's instructions) to no avail. Sony suggests I get it repaired. Of course being out of warranty I'm sure it's not worth the expense.
I had an ancient Panasonic machine that lasted over 15 years-this deal lasted just two. I know it will not be replaced by another SONY. It's a shame. I think SONY makes a great TV and VCR, but obviously they should stay out of the telephone/answering business. Unless you find this at a yard sale for a good price, stay away from the SPP-A973.

Summary: Piece of ...
Review: I have never had more people complain that they cannot hear us than with this phone! The sound quality is horrible. Whenever I call home I have to tell my husband to speak up until he's practically shouting. The same is true for incoming calls. I can't say that I hear static, and I'm not aware of the channels changing. People voices are just muffled, like they're talking through a wall. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, the caller ID has some quirks, and doesn't always show a new call. The answering machine also cuts out frequently. There are many features with the caller ID and number storage, but they are not very user friendly. Overall, this is the worst phone I've ever had.

Summary: Junk
Review: I have the exact same problem one of the other reviewers noted. The phone will just die out in the middle of a conversation. The only way to keep talking is to run over to the base and move the phone by the antenna. What's the point? Calls to Sony provided absolutely no help. When the phone works, it's cool, except the quality on the recorder is pretty bad. I'm out here looking for another phone to replace this one. I love Sony products (I've got TV, DVD, VCR, TIVO, Receiver, etc,) but I will never buy a Sony cordless again. I'm not the only one, either. Everyone I know that has had one has been disappointed. I guess they can't be great at everything!
