Summary: Lot's of features, but a few issues as well...
Review: This is a good phone... could have been a great phone if it weren't for several annoying problems with the design. There are many great features to this phone, but you can get info. on all of them from the product description or from the Uniden web site. What they don't tell you I've written below.

I've had this phone for about 9 months and I've overcome most of it's issues. The range for this phone is nice (I've taken it down to the park which is a 1 1/2 blocks from my house). The issues I still struggle with are as follows:

First, the "talk" button is a problem. It's large and easy to depress. Anyone with a cheek is bound to cut off their colleague, family or friend mid-sentence when positioning the phone between your shoulder and your ear.

Second, the base has a speakerphone but no hold button. It's easy to answer the phone when you can't find the handset... just remember that you have to hang up the base after you have located the handset. As an added bonus, if you bring the handset too close to the speakerphone with them both on, you will get the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Third, there's no hold or mute button on the handset. The hot item on the other end of the line WILL hear that toilet flushing if you aren't careful.

Fourth, Call Waiting Caller-ID is nice, but saving the number is a pain because you have to add a 1 for long distance numbers. When editing the number, the additional digit can't be inserted, so you end up re-typing the whole number again. Like I said, nice.

Fifth, sound quality for the answering device is pathetic. Maybe Uniden was trying to make a nostalgia play by making the answering system sound like two tin cans and string.

Those are the big ones. I got a headset to deal with the hands-free issue and the other issues I just live with. Overall, I think there are better phones out there.

Summary: CALLER ID
Review: This is a ok phone, I like all the options. But the problem is when I recieve a call while Im on the phone "call waiting" it cuts out for 2-3 seconds untill the digital display comes up with the caller ID on the display screen. This really bothers me...

Summary: Great Phone, one small issue
Review: This phone is great with one exception. 2.4 Ghz phones interfer with most wireless computer networks. Currently I have a 900Mhz Uniden Spread Spectrum that doesn't kick me off of my computer network. When I use this phone, I get booted. That's really the only issue I have, but that would be an issue with any 2.4 Ghz phone.

As far as the phone goes, it has the features I was looking for. I frequently get called in the middle of the night, so I wanted a phone that stood on-end and had the keys light up when it rang so I could see it in the dark. I also wanted caller I.D. on the handset, a good dialing memory, something small to fit on my nightstand, and an external headphone jack. Now you'd think that with those requirements finding a phone would be easy. Ha! This was the ONLY phone I could find that met those requirements. It has satisfied all of them quite nicely. Also, my other phone is a Uniden and I've been using it for 6 years and love it (I had to replace the battery once). In the past I've had problems with AT&T phones and Panasonic ones. When I purchased this phone, my girlfriend was looking to buy one too. In the end, she tried and returned multiple ones and ended up getting this one with the answering machine. All this happened without either of us knowing what phone the other one purchased. She's very happy with her phone too.

Summary: Old ones are better
Review: When Uniden introduced this phone years ago, I purchased it and was very please with the unit. Uniden was one of the first companies to have a backup battery in the base so the cordless unit can continue to work even with power outages. This phone performed well until one day, my wife accidently left the phone on the roof of our car. It did not fall off of course until I reach 50 MPH on the highway. I saw the phone bounce and come apart in my rear view mirror. We U-turned and I picked up the pieces. Only the battery cover came off and the battery popped out. No one seemed to run over the phone, battery yes. When I put it back together it seemed to work because I hit talk and it displayed talk but, we were of course too far away.
I got home that night and it worked. Now that is a tuff phone. I ordered another battery from Uniden and got another year and a half out of it before it began to act up.
So I tried, real hard to replace the phone. I wanted one with a speaker phone in the handset. Only 2.4 and 5.8 were available and none of them got the distance the old 900 DSS got. None were as clear. When I contacted Uniden to maybe get a refurbished one, none were available. I tried V-tech, other Unidens, Panasonic, ATT, none worked more then 300 feet away. Even Consumer reports tells you that the 900 MHz DSS gets the best distance and clarity.
I finally saw my old model throught Amazon, ordered it, got it and we are back in business.
This phone goes easily up to 1/4 mile plus from my home. I took the new phone, put it on my old base, the system reset itself and it worked. I decided to use the new base with the new phone.
Now I am looking for the older models with the keypad on the base and the single unit 900 MHZ DSS units.
In short, the newer 2.4 GHZ and 5.8 GHZ is a step backwards to me. They claimed you get distance but, no way. Maybe someday, they will improve their technology so one can be more then 300 feet from the base.
Thanks for reading this.

Summary: Dual Line Uniden DSS Speakerphone (EXS-9660)
Review: Why did I write this review... the Internet is making this a more consumer oriented world which is GREAT! I hope this post will help someone make an educated purchasing decision while also telling Uniden what they can improve upon.

This is a fantastic phone... two lines, DSS security, caller ID on the handset, as clear as a corded phone, long range, a speakerphone that actually sounds good and an overall great value for $150. I have looked a while and could not find all these features packed into a phone selling for <$200.

I have had the phone for about 2-months with the following six complaints/suggestions:

1. I purchased a second battery and it is not easy to insert it into the base for charging.

2. The line 1 and 2 buttons are in a bad location as it is easy to cut someone off or put them on hold while using your shoulder to hold the phone while talking.

3. The optional headset sounds terrible with the phone.

4. Why does Uniden.com not list the EXS-9660 model on their website? I had trouble even finding this phone when searching for a two line Digital Spread Spectrum phone with caller ID. The EXS-9650 appears to be the same phone without the caller ID.

5. When is the water proof model being released so I can sit in my jacuzzi and talk! ;-)

6. Hey Uniden... light up the handset like a cellular phone so we can dial and use all the cool buttons in the dark!

Overall, I am very pleased with the phone. If you want a second battery, I had good luck purchasing one on the uniden.com website. Although I love the phone, I am a little concerned reading all the posts about handsets going bad. Could this issue be something to do with power surges? I have mine hooked to a surge protector and UPS along with my computer... just in case.
