Summary: Neat Features, poor handsets
Review: I've had this system for over a year with mixed results. If you read the manuals, you can access a feature set that is rich and functional. If you are non-technical, you'll have problems as the menu system is not intuitive. In short, no problem for gadget freaks, but our spouses won't fare as well.

The system has been susceptible to interference and range limitations. The handsets have a noticable delay and/or non response to pressing keys (all 5 of my handsets, not just a problem unit). This is especially problematic for children and potential emergency situations with 911. We're replacing our system.

Summary: Great System
Review: I've had the system about a month. Voice quality is good and the system is well designed. It has so many features that it takes a while to get set up and familiar with everything. But once you learn the system, it is very flexable and does everything well. A bit pricey, but worth it in my opinion. I'd definitely buy it again.

Summary: Not cheap, but worth MORE than the price!
Review: I needed a dependable cordless phone with 2-line capability that offered great sound quality, and not much else. The Siemens 2402 delivers all that and much more. The reviews on this site and others pointed me to a choice between this model and one made by V-Tech with similar specs. After using the Siemens units I'm very happy with my choice.

I could have mounted the base unit anywhere in my business, since it has no controls beyond the "registration key" button which I've only used to register my second 2400 handset, but I chose a central location on a wall. My business is approximately 2200 sq. ft. of warehouse space, and the coverage of the phone is more than adequate, the call quality superb.

Other reviewers have criticized the 2402's complexity and lack of user-friendliness; all I can say is that many people really don't like to (or can't) read instructions. Most of the supposed limitations I read about are actually customizable features of the 2402, and in fact it's difficult to identify much that *isn't* customizable!

If you're looking for a "Cordless Phone for Dummies" this one isn't it, but if you're after a phone that delivers what everyone needs in a cordless and more, look no further.

Summary: Frustrated and disappointed
Review: I have purchased many products from Amazon.com. This is by far the worst product experience I have had. The engineering of this unit system was either done for the 1% of the population or the product was designed to fail. The detailed options do not include: answer, talk, hang-up. You must use hold, intercom, redial, etc., and then the back-lit face on the handset goes blank. It is so bad that NO ONE SHOULD BUY THIS ITEM, and Amazon.com would be wise to stop offering it.Two cans and a piece of string are superior to this failed promise.

Review: I have never written a review of something before, but these phones are so bad I wanted to warn other potential buyers.

We bought them (a 2402 & 2400) because they looked cool and had a lot of features. We should have paid attention to the other reviewers.

In our experience, these phones rarely work and when they do, the sound quality is awful (within 10 feet of the base station).

After fighting with the phones and going back and forth with Siemens for months, it is too late to return them. We're still using our 1992-era GE cordless because it sounds a lot better than the Siemens phones.

Caveat emptor.

Summary: A geek's thrill
Review: Overall, I like the Gigaset. For me, the battery life has not been as bad as some have complained -- especially with a pair of NiMH batteries substituted for the standard NiCads they supply. You can always get a few sets of spare batteries since the phone uses standard AA batteries. I see that as a big plus.

The sound quality has been somewhat "digital" but not enough to be offensive. Most people wouldn't notice it. It's certainly much better than a typical digital cell phone call.

If you're thinking of using this as a small office phone system, keep in mind that it handles only two lines and there are other limitations as well. For me, it's been great. If you really need a phone "system" for multiple users then keep looking.

The menus and user interface are a bit overly complex. Why should you have to press "Redial" and then "Talk" just to redial the last number called? Why do you have to wade through four levels of menus just to turn off the ringer? These are the result of the phone's tremendous flexibility -- too many menu choices!

My phone is mounted on the wall in the basement (not an ideal location) and I still have complete coverage throughout my house. I wonder if the people who complained about range limitations have the base located against a masonry wall, or are trying to send a signal through multiple walls. Certainly I've seen no reason to complain about the range.

This phone is great if you love tweaking. You can customize the phone's name, calling features, ringer tone and volume, plus bar certain numbers, add speed dials, maintain a call log, and many other things. The handsets are very lightweight and the belt clip works great. I can't complain -- it worked right out of the box without any programming -- but if you want to customize you can do that too.

Summary: Nine month user
Review: I've found the Siemens Gigaset 2402 to be the best cordless phone system that I've ever used. The voice quality is very good. The programable feature set is amazing. There are so many features, that it's probably not a good choice for someone who wants simplicity or is technophobic. If you have two phone numbers and want many different programmable features, digital security, the ability to transfer calls to other handsets and clear reception, this is a great choice. The intercom, conference and call transfer features are powerful. You can have up to 8 handsets per base station. My only disappointment was the system's range. I would estimate that the range is about 75 to 150 feet in our house. We have a fairly large house and have found some fringe areas.

Summary: Searching for the perfect home phone system? Here it is.
Review: I'll bet you're on the hunt for the perfect advanced home phone system just like I was. I'm glad to report that the Seimens Gigaset 2402 is it, or as close as we're going to get for [the money].

I've run the gamut of cordless phones over the years: 1) A two line scrambled analog Motorola (broke), a two line 900Mhz digital Sony (clicks and channel surfs constantly), a single line 900Mhz digital AT&T (sounds like a dixie-cup phone), and finally a two line 900Mhz digital Uniden (broke). I was on the hunt again when happily I stumbled onto the Seimens Gigaset 2402. The unit passed my basic tests immediately: no corded handset at the base that I don't want, and no answering machine that's redundant with my telco voice mail. So on to the details.

My main advice after playing with this thing for a week is to approach the Gigaset with an open mind; it's very different from typical consumer cordless phones. In fact, it's more like a small business key-set that's been simplified and moved down-market. It has a ton of features and customization options and not surprisingly they come with a certain amount of complexity. You actually need to READ THE MANUAL! You won't just plug it in and make that first test call to Mom ten seconds later. You'll want to configure important options like whether to allow a handset to "barge-in" on a line in use or on hold, whether a handset should grab line-1 or line-2 first, whether a handset can answer line-1 or line-2 or both, what ringing tone each handset produces for each line, whether you want to be known to one base station or two, and on and on. In short, if you are sick of phones that are missing that one cool feature you crave, chances are, the Siemens Gigaset has it. Just be prepared for a bit of a learning curve - this isn't a phone for technophobes.

Other reviewers have complained that the handset is uncomfortable when held between the cheek and shoulder for long periods... duh, get a headset! If you need to camp on long conference calls like me and you don't want the boss to hear your barking dog or crying baby, you'll need a good headset with mute because about the only feature the Gigaset handset lacks is mute. I strongly recommend the Plantronics Model M175 with volume control and mute button, it's comfortable and sounds great.

You can ignore other's reports about having to reset the base to release held calls. Like I said, read the manual. If you set the "privacy" option (a.k.a. barge-in) properly it's not a problem.

Last but not least, the sound quality is excellent and the range is more than adequate. I placed the base unit centrally upstairs to optimize the range.

Enjoy.

Summary: Disappointing and annoying
Review: The feature set of this phone looked fantastic, but it's been a source of constant annoyance in our house. As other reviews mentioned, the "hold" feature is extremely inflexible, and we've had to reset the entire base unit to have it "let go" of a call on hold. More than once.

The handset itself is exceptionally uncomfortable and nearly impossible to hold with just your shoulder and chin. The belt clip is well done and helpful.

Even with a full charge, we routinely get the "out of range" beeps ten feet from the base. This is particularly annoying since the call itself never cuts out anywhere inside the house.

The caller-ID feature is well done and *extremely* helpful. The menus and navigation work pretty well.

The uncomfortable handset and annoying hold/transfer arrangements make this an extremely annoying phone, but not quite enough to have returned it. We've not found another two-line phone that works this well (with the remote bases), but for a one-line phone this is at the bottom of the list with very few redeeming qualities.

Summary: Limited battery life is annoying
Review: i agree with some other opinions. the battery life is pretty bad if you're used to a cordless phone that goes for days before needing a recharge. it's kind of a pain to have to remember to return the phone to its cradle *every night* if you expect to use it the next day. this, even with the best batteries you can put in it. i hate to think what the stock batteries get you.

i also don't like how you have to dig through menus to get to the caller ID log.

i bought it for cordless headset use in the home, and in that regard, it works nicely.

overall, it's mostly a good phone. but, for me, it fell a bit short of expectations. i'm still looking for the perfect phone.
