Summary: Great feature set, poor audio quality
Review: The 9980 has the best feature set of any phone I found, including the capability to operate during a power outage. However, the handset is very difficult to hear, even at the highest volume setting. It seems to amplify room noise, making it nearly impossible to use around kids, dishwashers, etc. (No, I'm a 30-year old with excellent hearing ;-) The location and height of the Talk button make it easy to disconnect during a conversation. The quality of recorded messages is good, but the quality of the greeting is poor (some friends told us that they did not recognize our voices). All things considered, if you plan to use this phone in a quiet environment, it is a good value.

Summary: Worst phone I have ever owned!
Review: This is the worst telephone I have ever owned. I base this mainly on the poor reception. It is difficult to hear and there is a lot of static. My previous 900 MHz AT&T worked much better and it was five years older. I only had to replace it due to "child abuse".

Summary: Solid phone, some poorly designed features
Review: This phone delivers good sound quality and reception in a solid package. I have two design gripes:

1) there isn't any obvious way to adjust the ringer volume

2) the dialing sequence seems to have a timing dependency. Sometimes, I dial a number and press "talk" and the phone dials (as I'd expect). Sometimes I dial the number and press talk, and the number disappears so I have to start over from scratch. Very frustrating. This makes the phone unusable for slow dialers.

Summary: Basic Functions Well Done
Review: Uniden concentrated on the basics: long range, interference-free reception, clear sound in both the handset and answering device, efficient layout, and easy-to-use user interface. The handset is pleasant to hold and the lighted keypad is welcome at night. Their website and telephone support are outstanding. And they offer replacement parts at extremely reasonable prices. I can see no basis to fault this machine on quality and performance. The negatives I do see are missing features I would have liked to have, like an extension-in-use indicator in the handset data screen, or an insert function in the name/number editor.

Summary: Review of the Uniden EXS9980
Review: Was particularly interested in finding a phone that had caller I.D., speaker, answering machine and lighted key pad. This Uniden had it all. 1st I reviewed consumer reports that had a listing of a couple of different Uniden phones. This phone is excellent, sound is good, even the answering machine greeting sounds like me (most other digital answering machines really don't sound like the person leaving the greeting). Minor issues: It would be nice if the caller ID window was larger and better lit.

Summary: Better sound...
Review: We bought this phone after my wife insisted that our standard Uniden 900 Mhz sound quality wasn't good enough, so we opted for the digital spread spectrum model. It's definitely an upgrade. We have the 9980 model, which has an excellent digital answering machine and one line. The battery in the phone itself is a bit weak (If you forget to hang it up it dies). My favorite factor with all of the Uniden models is that they have a very tactile feel. When you push a button, you know it, no mush. It's the only brand on the market that seems to have that feel -- sort of the way nothing used to feel like an IBM keyboard, if you know what I mean. It's also a comfortable and lightweight phone, not too small like many phones nowadays (who wants a teensy phone that has a microphone two inches from your mouth?).
It would also be nice if you could just dial numbers and answer the phone without having to push talk first!

All in all, I like it plenty, and it's also the top-rated cordless brand in Consumer Reports.

Enjoy!
