Summary: Feature-full, but flawed phone
Review: j_navas, do you sell this phone or something?

Yes, the phone is full-featured. The ones I like best are the 50-number on-screen phone list (with 30+ digits each), backlighting, and optional jack-free charger.

However, the Off button hits your face while you're talking, and the shape slips out of your hand. The range is average for 2.4 GHz.

Shockingly, you cannot use multiple handsets simultaneously. That means you and your son can't talk to Grandma at the same time, a major design flaw for a multi-handset phone.

Radio Shack is currently (2/4/02) selling this for $90 including an extra handset. Still I'd think twice about getting it. Better instead to get two GE 27730s from Office Depot for $30 each.

A sad but little known fact is that apparent diversity of consumer product offerings is often just branding of a relatively small number of real choices. Multi-handset 2.4 GHz cordless phones are no exception. If you look closely, you'll see that most of the current offerings: have identical (or nearly identical) feature sets; are based on FHSS (frequency hopping spread spectrum, also known as FH DSS, or frequency hopping digital spread spectrum); and are built in China. These products (e.g., Panasonic KX-TG1050N/KX-TG1000N/KX-TGA100N) are pretty much the same.

The Sony line of multi-handset 2.4 GHz cordless phones (SPP-A2780/SPP-A2770/SPP-A2730/SPP-A2720/SPP-H273) is a notable exception: significantly different feature set, based on DSSS (direct sequence spread spectrum), and built in Taiwan. DSSS, a more costly and sophisticated technology than FHSS, provides greater range and resistance to interference, particularly indoors. As a result, these Sony phones provide remarkably clear sound.

The Sony line also abounds with thoughtful design touches that makes it a joy to use. The Jog Dial makes it a breeze to access the phone book, call lists, and menu items. The handset has a solid feel, is comfortable to use, and will stand up on any horizontal surface thanks to a flat base. And of the course the styling is up to usual high Sony standards.

Summary: Good single Cordless phone
Review: We purchased our Sony Cordless Phone as two units sold in the same package from Sam's Warehouse. Major drawback is without reading the package closely, we assumed that both cordless units could work at the same time. We soon discovered only one works at a time. The range is decent. I have had better range with my VTech cordless phones that used DSS (digital spread spectrum) technology that is a must if you want better privacy (less vulnerable to ease droppers with scanners). The off button on the front of the phone is prone to being hit by my face and hanging up accidentally if not careful, but hasn't been that big of a issue. More annoying to me is the back of the phone piece has a built-in belt clip that I find I accidentally flip out while talking on the phone, when I push it back in while talking it is rather loud in your ear. Several times we have dropped the phone on the ground and it has survived, but nearly every the compartment lid to the battery falls off. It's worried me that I'm going to break something but it has managed to survive. Overall I believe this is a good product. I would purchase it again and enjoy the clear reception.
