Review: ***UPDATE*** OK, it looks like I jumped the gun on my condemnation. I bought yet another wireless phone, and had the SAME problem. I was totally baffled. I have an old cordless Uniden that works fine, I have other wireless devices that work so it didn't appear to be an interference problem, and I could even hear the static on the speakerphone! After a bit of investigation, I found the cause. I have DSL, and apparently the mucking that DSL does with the frequency can be picked up as background noice on modern cordless phones (which I assume is why I didn't have the problem on my old phone). You can get around this problem easily, it turns out, by buying a "DSL filter." You can buy one at Radio Shack.I didn't get to retest the Uniden EXAI2980i with the filter installed so I don't know if the problem went away, but it did go with the new phone. Anyhow, I didn't want to wrongfully mislead people anymore than I have already. ***ORIGINAL***
Original rating: 1 In my experience, and I've owned probably 4 different cordless phones (though I haven't tried 2.4Ghz yet) in the last year or two, sound quality is almost always lacking compared to a land-line. You'd think that the engineers making these products could get it right. The Uniden EXAI2980i is by far the worst cordless I've owned. I just bought it from Amazon and I'm afraid I'm going to have to return it because it stinks. There is constantly static in the background, and the volume (even at "Maximum") in the handset is frequently so quiet that I find myself constantly asking my callers to repeat themselves. The phone looks nice, and has some decent features, and I have another Uniden I'm very happy with (a 6 year old model believe it or not) but I cannot endorse this phone in any way if you want to actually hear the people you're talking to.

Summary: Good Price on a Great Phone
Review: I read several cordless phone reviews before deciding on this one. This phone has lots of features including a belt clip, a headset port, the built-in answering machine and caller id. I can't comment on the caller id, because I do not subscribe to that service. As for the answering machine though, I am pleased with it's performance. As with most phones, you can call in and check your messages. The phone has built in instructions to help you once you've entered your access number, so you don't have to memorize complicated key presses to check your messages. The default phone message talks a bit slowly, but of course you can easily record your own message. I like the playback because you can speed up the messages without the voices sounding like unintelligible chipmunks. The playback also tells you the date and time the call was left AFTER it plays the message, which I find to be a real timesaver. The phone allows you to program in 10 numbers, which I found rather cumbersome to enter, but you should only have to do it once. Editing/Entering numbers requires some special keystrokes, and I always have to fetch the manual because I can never remember what they are. I find myself wishing I could save more than 10 phone numbers. A couple of pluses to the memory: you can enter the names of the person you are dialing, and you can also program in many digits (and pauses), so entering in your pre-paid calling card number is possible. The button layout on the phone and the base are easy to use and clearly labeled, and the LCD display on the phone lights up for easy use in the dark. The phone will also time the length of your calls, which is rather interesting. With the base unit buried in the middle of my apartment complex, I am able to get a range of about 100 yards. With less interference, I'm sure you could easily go farther than that. One picky thing I liked about the phone was that it has a good balance and weight to it. The construction feels solid. Overall, this is a great phone and I'm very happy with it (especially the pricing), my biggest complaint is that you can only save 10 phone numbers.

Review: I tried a Bell South, AT&T and Sony phone and then choose to try this phone after investigating reviews on the internet. For the price, this is an excellent phone. It has a clearer reception than any of the above brands I mentioned about and the Bell South and AT&T phone was a 2.4 MHZ. Very easy to operate without having to push several buttons to delete caller ID. Nice clear answering machine. If it had a light that blinked when a person called or an alert it would be Superior in my opinion. In a nutshell, I'm a satisfied customer with this phone and believe you would be also.

Summary: Fuzzy reception
Review: Phone, caller id and answering machine are all very easy to use, but it is fuzzy. I had the Panasonic 900mhz. It was very clear in comparison. I'm returning this one and getting a Panasonic.

Review: Uniden has done fairly well with low cost cordless phones but their 900 MHz equipment really does have flaws. I returned mine to Best Buy and bought a 900 MHz Sony for the same price that works great...
