Summary: Pretty good phone...
Review: At first I was a little hesitant to buy this phone because it only had an average of three stars, but it had the features I wanted at a reasonable cost so I took a chance...I like the phone. The sound quality is good (not great), and the range is very good. I can wander all through the house without breaking up or losing quality. There is a little background "hum" (some others have also reported this), but that may be because it sits on my desk next to my computer, scanner, lamp, etc. The noise isn't distracting though... The speakerphone on the base is very good (not great) and is clear both ways. The coolest feature has to be the speakerphone on the handset. The handset is pretty small (cell phone size) so you could easily get a cramp in your neck if you had to hold it there for too long. You can put the handset down on the counter (or desk, or whatever) and still carry on your conversation without risking neck injury...

Summary: Best Phone Ever
Review: This is hands down the best portable phone I have ever owned. I have had a Vtech 900mhz phone before which was great, but this is even better. Its loaded with great features, and easy to use menu, the caller ID works great, and its style is amazing. The quality of the phone is terriffic, and only after a substancial distance will it begin to cut out. I reccommend this phone to everyone, its worth Every Penny!

Summary: Earpiece sound was poor
Review: Receiving a call and listening on the supplied Handset was poor. If I plugged in my own Headset the reception was good. Talking on the phone was fine. The party on the other end could hear me quite well. Vtech needs to improve the acutal earpiece used for hearing in the handset.

Summary: Performs Well @ Price Point
Review: After reading a number of other reviews, I wasn't sure that they were talking about the same phone I recently bought. Here's why I bought the phone and my take on the quality of the features that were most important to me: -- Voicemail Waiting Notification: I use the voicemail service provided by my local phone company. With my old phone, I had to pick up and dial to find out if I had a voicemail waiting. This phone has a small red (LED) light on the top of the phone that will notify you when a message is waiting. Unlike the expereince of some other reviewers, this has worked great for me. -- Speakerphone on the Base: I work from home from time to time and need a speakerphone for conference calls. This phone has a speakerphone on the base unit and also has a mute button. The quality is decent, not fantastic. But if you are just looking for a fantastic speaker phone, you're buying from Polycom, not VTech. I found that the microphone on the VTech is very sensitive (you don't need to speak loudly) and the quality of my voice actually improved by moving the phone a little further away from me while talking. -- Ability to Add Additional Phone(s): In our house, the fact that you can walk around with a cordless means you leave it places that are inconvenient to get to when the phone rings. As a result, I wanted the ability to add a second or third phone WITHOUT needing another phone jack since we aren't wired in many rooms. The VTech is supposed to allow the addition of up to 3 additional phones, without needing additional phone jacks. (I recently ordered a second handset, but have not received it yet.) -- Call Quality: I wouldn't notice if I couldn't hear a pin drop on the other end of the phone... I don't need that level of quality, I just want something that doesn't breakup or sound noticably bad. The VTech handset seems to have a quiet "hum" when I use it next to my computer, but otherwise it has been very clear in other areas of the house. Overall, the quality is fine. The phone has some other standard features that you can read about in the product description like stored numbers, last number redial, call waiting caller id, multiple ring tones, etc, etc. The features are similar to what you might expect on a cell phone today, and all seem to work fine. The battery life does seem a little short but if you are like me and tend to put it in the charger overnight at least once every two days, I don't think you'll have a problem. Overall, I'd say the phone is good for the price if you're interested in the features that I mentioned. If you don't mind spending another $50 - 100$ for a similar system w/ 2 phones, check out the AT&T product.

Summary: Just find the right electrical outlet for it...
Review: Being a person who likes gadgets, I purchased the base and an extra extension, despite the previous reviews on Amazon. Of course, the first place I plugged it in, I got a buzzing sound on the line. I then noticed that the same buzz was there, regardless of using the cordless handset or the speakerphone on the base. It wasn't too difficult to figure out that this phone's base is sensitive to RF noise (I can't tell if it was from the electrical outlet or the phone line). I moved the base from the kitchen to the bedroom (based on an earlier review about noise when the microwave was on), and the sound quality is much better. If moving it to another room isn't an option, buy an RF filter at any electronics store. After that, it's a wonderful phone to have, both in terms of sound quality and features. Also, since the batteries are NiMh, and not NiCad, you can put the phone in the charger whenever you want to without worrying about memory effect. And in my humble opinion, an extremely lightweight phone (because it has an extremely lightweight battery) with a charge life of only 2 days is fine, as long as I can put it in the charger it nightly without worrying about memory effect. I say VTech continues to make the best cordless phones out there.

Summary: Another example of good looking gadget without a heart/brain
Review: I was attracted by the style and the features of this phone back in this summer, and I went ahead to order it online. The main reason I bought this phone was the built-in speaker phone on the handset. I think this is a very useful and convenient feature. I don't have to plug a headset and still can enjoy hand-free talking in my house. Unfortunately, this phone couldn't deliver any promising feature. First, the handset speaker phone was so weak that even I adjusted the volume to the loudest position, I have to pick it up and listen to it within less than a foot to my ear. All the people i talked to on the phone said that they couldn't hear me clearly, or couldn't hear my at all. A lot of time, I had to switch to the $10 corded phone. Second, the battery ran out very fast. If I frequently used the phone, I have to recharge it every day. Also, the LCD is always on with message. Whenever my phone line was connected to the Internet, a message was showing on the display saying the line is busy, until I disconnect. I think this is one of the reason the battery charge won't last long. Third, this base unit doesn't have external antenna, the range of this phone is even poorer than regular cordless phone. I don't believe it is 2.4GHz at all. Fourth, the "OS" of this phone is poorly designed. I couldn't edit the name in the address book. To find a number in the address is cumbersome. Unless I forgot the phone number, it is faster to dial manually than retrieve the number from the address book.

Summary: Great styling, great features
Review: I've had the VTech 2431 for a few months now and it has performed well. Sound quality is good (provided the microwave is not running) and it's packed with nifty features. Also it looks nice sitting on the counter top due to its stylish design. On the negative side, I've found the earpiece to be a bit uncomfortable for long conversations, mainly due to the small size of the handset. Also I expected the range to be better... performance falls off greatly once I venture outside the house. But if you don't feel you need tons of range, this small, stylish phone is a fine choice.

Summary: 2.4 Gigahertz...I don't think so!
Review: My old Vtech DSS 900Mhz has better reception. I'm quite disappointed with the reception range. I couldn't even go two rooms away and it starts to break up. My walls are made of concrete. I called tech support and was told that frequency should penetrate through them with ease. Well, not so. I can't even show it off to friends and family. I might just get embarrased with this so-called 2.4 gigahertz phone. Another problem that I discovered is that the voice-mail indicator doesn't work. The design, however, is cool. Looks like a cell phone. I like the handset intercom. The sound is loud but again it breaks up. I will probably return it and get a different brand.

Summary: LCD-lousey,cheap,display!
Review: I am on my second VTech 2431. The first one, the display quit working in less than a week. I considered this to be a fluke so I returned it to exchange for another one on 09-05-00. On 11-14-00 the display would not display anything when the memory or menu keys were pushed. Two times is a charm to me and this will be my last overrated VTech phone. Be advised!

Summary: Horrible Reception
Review: Okay, I read all the reviews so I was warned; but the features were exactly what I needed so I took a chance. It didn't pay off. The features were fantastic: multiple handsets, speakerphone (one on handset is cool too), visual v-mail indication on base and handsets, convenient small size. The handset sound wasn't the best, but I could live with it. But the phone was totally unusable. First, the handset that came with the base worked sometimes, but it also often completely garbled my speech. I thought (hoped) it was just a bad handset, so I moved the extra handset onto the base. That handset had such bad reception that I was close enough to the base to switch to speakerphone yet the person I was speaking to couldn't understand me over the handset (the batter was fully charged). I wanted to like it, I tried to like it, but when it comes down to it, the phone has to support the basic functions of speech, and that's where this one fails.
