Summary: Decent phone, sound not great
Review: I'm in the desperate search for a decent cordless, and I own the GE 27998GE6, which I am trying to replace. The 2224 has a clearly inferior sound, even when you activate the voice-enhancer (why do they have that? would anyone use the phone without activating it?). It is just much duller sounding. Other features are nice, and it has a decent LCD display, but this is not really a great phone.

GE produces much better phones, a nicer handset, feels more 'ergonomic' and sturdier. But it has this really inane feature of asking you to listen to ALL your messages before you get to the new one. They probably think this makes sense, as they use it on other models. But is the reason I am thinking of sending it back.

But it has other great features, like being able to redial by just hitting one button, even while you are getting the busy sound. If only they fixed their answering machine....

Or, if only SONY started making phones again. They were really the best, crystal clear, and unbreakable...

Summary: Something wrong with Panasonic Batteries in general
Review: Ive only had the phone a few weeks so time will tell, but so far Im happy. Horrible battery life and poor sound quality on both the recorded greeting and on the recorded message were the primary reasons for replacing the old phone.

The biggest complaint from other reviewers seems to be the battery, but for me the battery life is worth every penny of the purchase price. The first few charges have each lasted a full week before the battery indicator was down to "one bar". During this week, there was probably only about hour of usage, but this is pretty typical for our household.

I havnt recorded a greeting yet, but the quality of recorded messages is just as clear as is the sound during a call. The phone has some kind of voice enhancement capability, but it is turned off.

I dont need the phone to have great range, but walked around the yard with it just to see what it could do. At 100-125 feet, there was no change in the sound quality so that was good enough for my use.

No review would be complete without mentioning the things you dont like, so...I only have two:

As others have mentioned, the "number of messages" display is hard to read because it is not backlit.

It would be really nice if the handset displayed the date/time when it is not in a call. I know it has that info because you use the handset to set the date/time. Oh Well...

Summary: Good looks; bad phone
Review: Less than a year after buying the phone and replacing the battery once, the phone works poorly. Cannot press several keys. Therefore cannot dial out numbers. Can only receive incoming calls. The price at the time of purchase was higher than now. It appears it is hard to find long lasting cordless phones.

Summary: Good phone for the money
Review: Purchased this phone from Walmart at the best price I found while looking on internet. The phone has several useful features including 2.4 GHz operation, 15 minute total answering machine, caller ID, full functionality from the handset, and what I liked, speaker phone. This last feature makes the phone really convenient. You can turn it on/of during a phone call if needed. What's really nice for me at least, is the fact that the phone is long and you can actually feel comfortable having it next to your face and it long enough to go from your ear to your mouth.

Onto critiqueing the comments that I have read. I must be the lucky one in that I had not had any battery issues whatsoever. In fact, after the battery has been charged in the cradle, I don't usually return the handset back until the battery gets low (as recommended in the manual) and have about 1 week of off/on use as the result. What I must agree is a little annoying is the fact that the answering machine has an LCD message indicator that isn't backlit and this makes for a tough time quickly seeing whether you have had messages. But, looking at the handset periodicaly can assist or STARING at the message indicator (not that bad though).

Overall, I'd recommend the phone

Summary: Surprised!
Review: Reading several negative reviews (yet trusting my own instincts), I was surprised at how much I like and appreciate this phone and its abilities. I love its look; I love its feel; I love its features. No problem charging the battery or keeping it charged.

I have never used speakerphone before and now use it all the time (and others say they can hardly tell I'm no speakerphone). Bottom line: a great product for the money. I am sold on Panasonic cordless phones.

Summary: WORST PHONE ON THE MARKET
Review: This is the worst cordless phone I have EVER purchased. Two new batteries over the last three months. Will not hold charge. Goes dead without warning. Placed into charger and still will not charge, even with new battery, over one "bar" on the charge scale.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Summary: You get what you pay for
Review: This would be a decent phone, if not for two really big problems. First, the range is absolutely awful -- the sound starts cutting off when I walk downstairs, and the Voice Enhancer feature actually makes it worse. (I don't get it -- even my 900 MHz analog Panasonic was better.) The phone's speed-dial system is just as badly designed. You can't program a number key to automatically dial a phone number. Instead, what used to be a two-key process now takes at least four key presses, scrolling down through a list of alphanumeric entries, etc. This new system also means you can't access the phone memory in the middle of a call, which makes using a phone card excruciating.

Summary: Very disappointed!
Review: We have several Panasonic phones and have always been pleased with their performance. So, when our old Sony phone finally died on us, we wanted to replace it with a reasonably priced, white, cordless phone with digital answering system and caller ID. This was one of the few white phones on the market that met these requirements. We were excited about the 2.4 GHz technology that is supposed to provide such great range capabilities and felt confident with the brand name.

However, after 3 weeks of use, the phone is driving us (and our friends who call us) crazy. The reception cuts out on almost every call, even when we are standing next to the base unit. It is guaranteed to drop the call if I walk down the hall or upstairs in my home. I haven't even tried to venture into the driveway with it! Also, it sounds like there is a constant echo when speaking into the phone. At first, I thought turning down the volume and turning the voice enhancer off might help, but it didn't. Right now, I am shopping for a different phone to replace this one. Very frustrating!
