Summary: Range is terrible
Review: The concept of this phone is good, but the implementation is terrible. The problems:
1. The range is about 1/20th the range for a 900 mhz Sony that cost 1/5 as much (the Gigaset will NOT even reach across the house). This is not an isolated instance, two base stations did the same thing as do multiple handsets. The Sony and the gigaset were in the same location too so it was not a factor of varied locations. Whether it is the 2.4Ghz vs 900mhz, I do not know, but the range is very bad. And Siemens' support line was no help at all in resolving the issue.
2. The handsets are flimsy and seem low quality.

The concept itself is very good, but Siemens needs to do a LOT better job in building a product that reaches its goals. I like the features for the most part (e.g. auto-updating the time on the base station, transferring directory entries between phones, needing only one base station, but having the option of having too), but the problems are sufficient to make the features useless.

Summary: No Range At All - Beware!
Review: It was supposed to have an indoor 150 foot range between handset and base unit. I didn't take it even 25 feet and immediately lost all quality voice sound and heard nothing but static. I read others complain about this problem, but didn't believe it could be THIS BAD. Well, believe it!

Summary: Excellent telephone for a busy family.
Review: I have no interests in Siemens or their product. I am responsible for computer and telephone integration at the company that I work at and I have 25 years experience in this field. I am amazed at the range of comments on this product. I do not doubt that there unhappy people out there, but I am a very satisfied owner of this equipment. I received a 2420 with three extensions as a gift form my father-in-law. I had been interested in this unit for some time as a solution to the telephone/communications needs of our family. I was blown away at the feature set of this unit. I have taken the time to read the instructions (over 100 pages), set it up (several hours) and I could not be happier with a telephone product. I live in a two story house with a finished basement. The phone works in every room of the house and outside for a range of about 150'. If you are not prepared to read the 100 plus pages of instructions and spend the appropriate time to set this unit up (the gift was from a family member who didn't have the time), you will not be happy with the results. Also, if you are in a building with concrete and steel walls, I would not expect this unit to "penetrate" these. Stick to the 900 mhz phones. This unit would not be my choice for use in an multi-room office setting (I would hard wire). I would also be aware of potential interference from other 2.4 mhz products operating in the same area. There are some wonderful bargains on used and remanufactored units. Check the auction sites out too. Good luck!

Summary: Excellent product, under rated
Review: I have had this phone for about a year; it is used for business at home. All the features work fine with the exception of the range which seems to be limited to about 100 ft. The directory transfer is not a problem. My home is sheathed with foil faced insulation so maybe that affects the range. I've had no quality problems at all with either the deskset or handset. Maneuvering through the features and menus could be a little easier. I would buy another one but sympathize with the folks who have experienced quality problems.

Summary: Extreme Dissappointment!
Review: I'm a techno-junkie... I bought this phone anticipating a great product. However, I found great features but poor quality. While I have been able to use most of the features, I have not been able to get the more advanced features such as call transfer and handset paging into general use in the household. Non-techies beware! This phone is not intuitive to use. If you aren't already techno-savvy, you will have trouble. I have 5 handsets in which I replaced the standard batteries with NiMH immediately. Even so, battery life is poor - I average 1-2 hrs talk time. Most suprisingly, the range is terrible! I live in a 8000 sq ft house so I expected some problems, but I cannot use the phone further than 50 feet from the base! I suspect that the 2.4Ghz wavelength is a multiple of the wire mesh size used in standard wall construction. Lastly, I have had significant quality problems. I have had three handsets fail and now the base LCD is losing pixel lines making it unreadable... All failed or began failing days after the warranty expired. I am now faced with potentially throwing good money after bad to repair or replace the defective components, or dump the whole system and go with Panasonic. I really expected more from Siemens!

Summary: Long-time user: this is a solid phone
Review: I work from my home, and bought a Gigaset 2420 (with an additional handset) a year ago to use both as my home office phone and our personal phone system for our home. ...

Range / sound quality

In range, the sound quality is excellent, comparable to a hardwired phone. I commonly use the extensions to talk to customers, and they have no idea I'm on a cordless. When you reach the edge of the range, there are short dropouts, increasing in frequency until the connection goes entirely. It's a gradual process- you won't walk out of range without knowing it. My base station is on the second floor of my 2600 ft drywall / wood frame house, and I have no range issues indoors. It works fine out the front of the house to the street, about 200 ft. I have some dropouts on the back porch, but because of the angle, there's a lot of building from there to the base (a floor, angled roof, and three walls. It would be nice if a "real" external antenna could be added to the base.

Interferance

My experience is that the system is very tolerant of interferance from other 2.4 GHz devices. I run a 802.11b wireless LAN in my home (so I can roam around with both my laptop and phone!) and under normal circumstances experience absolutely no interferance. If I'm copying a large file over the network to my local server (ie, pushing the 802.11b network at maximum bandwidth) I'll get very minor dropouts if the phone is right next to the laptop, but it seems to get better over time (as if the systems are adapting to avoid each other). I have heard that the X10 2.4GHz remote audio and video products can cause pretty serious interferance, but that's due to poor design of the X10 systems.

Speakerphone

I've never had any complaints. It's not a Polycom, but is otherwise as good as any other I've used.

Answering system

Very clear recording- doesn't sound "compressed" like cheaper units. Good remote features, including a voice guide when dialing in remotely and message skip / replay / delete, etc... When using a remote handset to access messages, the LCD on the remote phone displays answering system comands. There are separate configurable outgoing messages for each line, and you can configure limits on how long callers are allowed to record. My major beef with it: there's only one mailbox, which is shared by both lines. Messages are annotated with the originating line in both the LCD and the voice, but it's still inconvenient to manage both office and personal messages in the same box. This is my biggest issue with the entire system.

Directory

I don't use it extensively, but to emphasize what some others have posted here contradicting negative reviews, it *does* allow sending of directories between handsets. Generally, it works very similarly to a cellphone directory. Unfortunately, there's no way to sync it with a computer. The CallerID call log is also accessible from all units.

Headset jacks / mute

I use a HelloDirect headset (a major improvement to my quality of life) and it plugs directly into both the base station and the remote units without an adapter. It's the same plug standard used by many cellphones. On the base station, the headset "takes over" the speakerphone, and is controlled with the speakerphone button. On the extensions, it simply is used instead of the built-in speaker and mic. Volume is excellent for direct calls. When there's a speakerphone on the other end or a bad conference bridge line, it would be nice to have an external amp (which should work), but it's no worse than when using the handset.

Mute

Other than the single mailbox, my other beef with the system: the remote units don't have a "mute" feature (the base station does). The mobile / headset combination is awesome for very long conference calls (gives you the freedom to leave the desk), but the lack of mute is unfortunate.

Internal transfer, intercom, etc...

Works as advertised and expected- very similar to a "real" office phone system.

Handset battery life

I immediately replaced the included NiCd batteries with NiMh batteries (standard AA, fully supported by Siemens and the charging system), and the battery life is *excellent*. 5+ hours talk time (I've never been on longer than that in a single day) and several days standby.

Summary

This is a great phone system. There are some minor flaws (single voicemail box, lack of mute on remote handsets), but they are far outweighed by the all-around quality of the system. I recommend it to others without reservation. ...

Summary: A couple problems make the phone not worthwhile
Review: This is the first review I have ever written, but i thought i should take the time to warn potential buyers. My father bought this phone and has not stopped complaining about it since. I thought it would be cool because its sleek design, two line caller id, multiple handsets et cetera, but even as only an occasional user (when i'm home from college) I have found it to be terrible. Most people have mentioned that the range is pathetic. You can hardly be on a different floor to use the handset. Furthermore, every time i pick up a handset it is dead or has a low battery. This on its own is not the end of the world, but when it has a low battery the handset beeps. If that low battery kicks in in the middle of the night it is horrible because it will not stop and you have to get out of bed, track it down and place it back on the cradle. I'm sure that use in an office is different, but i have always felt that one of the advantages (and points) of having a corless phone is the ability to leave it anywhere in the house (without having to worry about it running out of batteries in 4 hours).

Summary: Pity.
Review: What I liked. Great Speaker Phone. Fantastic feature set. What I disliked. For all the 2.4GHz Hype, the quality in my 1200sq ft newly constructed (read: 90% drywall) apartment is not good. (Inferior to my 900MHz) But the 2 most irritating things I found were a 22 digit limit on Speed Dial numbers. Awful Awful Awful. Because the Pause Key seems very short (The (information rich, but poorly indexed) manual does not say how long a pause is) I had to waste 7 of my 22 digits on pauses to check my voice mail at the office.. Cant program in some international numbers if preceeded with the 1010 number of your choice. Finally, power blips reset the clock, but not the stored numbers. Weird.
