Summary: Great little Caller ID Unit - if you can find it
Review: ...What I was especially interested in was a unit able to detect the stutter tone notification for voice mail message waiting. This has it. The Radio Shack models do not.In addition, it allows you to sort and select your caller ID listings, pick up on call waiting, dial the displayed number, etc...I've seen other units selling for as much as $49 with less features. Definitely buy it if you need what I've described...Find it where you can...

Summary: Don't always expect a message indicator
Review: Having switched to ATT Voicemail from Ameritech, I no longer received the stutter signal that set off the message waiting light on my phone. ATT told me to buy an ATT Call ID box to receive the signal. ATT Telephone Products told me this box would do so I bought it. It did not show the message waiting indicator even though messages were waiting on my ATT Voicemail. When I complained to ATT Telephone Products they responded: "We apologize that you're having difficulty with your CD436. The Voice Mail indicators will not work if they are not receiving the signal from the local telephone company. This signal can come in FSK only, this unit will not work with a stutter signal. Please call your local telephone company and see if the line is working properly and you are receiving the signal properly." My local telephone company is ATT. ATT then told me that only their model 100 or model 200 will receive this stutter signal. You can only buy it from ATT direct. So much for the AT&T 436.

Summary: Not compatible with DSL
Review: I like the features of this unit and would like it even better if it had all of features some other reviewers listed, like call sorting and adjustable LCD. Mine has neither of these features. But my real complaint is that when my DSL modem is plugged into the wall, my Caller Display 436 will not work. It works fine as long as the DSL is not plugged in. My phones with caller ID display work at all times. I like the fact that this unit came with a power supply rather than batteries. It would be nice to have a back up battery in case of power failute and a larger display would also be nice. Is anyone aware of other units which have no problem with the DSL line?

Review: I recently purchased the AT&T 436 and it displays call made from land lines as it should. But calls made from AT&T wireless phones don't register, instead it displays "error present" or "line error". Strange, my other caller ID devices, including an AT&T wall phone, Bell South caller ID box and a Panasonic wireless phone all display both cell and land line numbers. What's even more interesting is this AT&T caller ID box is specifically rejecting calls from it's own AT&T family. Go figure! I returned it for a full refund.

Summary: Short circuit!
Review: The AT&T 436 had a short-circuit after 3 months of use. It brought our phone line to its knees. It took a Verizon technician an hour to trace our phone trouble to one little caller-ID box gone bad. Our phone line was out for two days.
