Summary: THIS PHONE ROCKS!!!!!
Review: The sound quality is fantastic and the features are awesome!!! No static, and I've been told that I sound like I'm on a corded phone. The blue backlighting is really cool too. I had bought 2 different brands of 2.4 mhz phones and everyone said I sounded like I was in a cave, very far away, or like I had a cold. Not the case here. The sound is awesome. I love this phone!!!!

Summary: best of the pack
Review: great features including pre-dialing the number before placing the call, caller id callback number options (1+, area code only, etc.) and great speakerphone quality on both handset and base. hands-free intercom feature is very useful and 5.8 GHz technology does NOT interfere with high-speed, wireless internet. Side-by-side with the AT&T 5830, only differences looks to be the handset/base unit configuration (with AT&T, handset sits in base unit). If you don't have room for the base unit or you want to wall-mount the base unit . . . the VTech 5820 is the perfect choice. Probably the best cordless phone I've owned thus far. Highly recommend.

Summary: Great Phone
Review: After trying several other phones that I didn't like, I'm extremely pleased with this phone. Looks great, works great, outstanding sound quality and good volume range. The uncluttered keypad appeals to members of the family who like it "simple" while still allowing the power users to customize it. It has a mute button (unlike many popular cordless phones), and it has a simple system for transferring calls between the base and the handset, or handset to handset. The backlit display has text that is large enough to read without a magnifying glass. It even lets you cycle through variations of the caller ID numbers to handle situations where you need to dial 1 or you shouldn't dial an area code.Unlike another reviewer, I have had no trouble using the phone on a telephone line with a DSL connection. A few quibbles:
- The caller ID "New Calls" list has to be separately cleared on each handset and the base. This involves many key presses that must be repeated at each location because each caller ID entry must be separately acknowledged.
- By default, both the base unit and the handset ring. This seems like a great idea until you try and locate the handset by its ringing, which is close to impossible if it is in the same room as the base. Fortunately, you can turn off either one.
- It would sure be nice if the caller ID understood custom ringing - we have multiple phone numbers that go to the same phone. Unfortunately, I haven't seen a phone that does this.
- In spite of the prominent "5.8 GHz" designation, the phone only uses 5.8 GHz in one direction - it's 2.4GHz in the other direction. You have to read the fine print to discover this information.

Summary: Hold The Wire
Review: VTech has created quite a visually stunning phone system with their VT-5831 entry. The blue charging light, the disco ball colors spelling out the company name on the antenna, the stand up styling of the receiver is all very state-of-the-art and up to the minute. The phone is light weight and the reception is quite good. Furthermore, it is easy enough to set up and the battery charges quite quickly. But there are a few drawbacks that VTech should address. The memory system is fine. You can either manually input a name (and then recall it by browsing or searching as opposed to trying to remember the number you assigned to it)or just save the caller when they call you up. HOWEVER, why do you have to input this data on each phone? You can save it on the BASE unit but then you have to re-enter the information on each handset unit you own. And it doesn't stop with the phone directory. If you have CALLER ID, you can view which call you missed from each handset you have but you have to clear it individually. That is time consuming. Also, the BASE unit is lightweight but why can't the phone (handset one) be attached to it? Why do you have to have the base and the handset separate? It takes up too much room or desk space. It's a good enough phone but the technological advances all seem to be in the company's decorative stylings and not in substance.

Summary: Great Cordless Phone
Review: We are absolutely in love with these new phones.
They work so good we can hardly believe it.
Battery life (3 days off charger), range (150 yards), clarity, intercom and speaker features are all superior.
They also do not interfere with the 2.4GHz wireless DSL network router in
our house like our prior Sony 2.4 GHz did.
If only they would share or transmit memory entries between units and
recognize numbers in memory for caller ID they would be 100%.

Summary: Poor Quality Cordless Phone
Review: I pre-ordered this item and patiently waited for it to arrive. The new V-Tech 5831 cordless phone has the worst reception I've ever experienced; don't plan on talking more than six feet away from the base, and forget about leaving the phone in a convenient place for receiving calls because it will not hold a charge for more than two hours. So, I am on the lookout for another model after returning this phone. I wish someone would design a cordless phone that was worth buying.

Summary: Decent phone, but gives interference to an FM receiver
Review: I bought the phone about 10 days ago and quite like it. One minus is that it gives some nasty interference to my FM receiver: strong click every second. Another minus was already mentioned: that it doesn't synchronize Called ID display with the phonebook name. My previous 900 MHz Called ID phone allowed to enter its area code, to strip the area code indication and to avoid dialing it back with the areacode (to avoid local toll charges?). This phone doesn't allow it. Speakerphone and earpiece sound quality is very good. Another pluses: charger for the spare battery on the base (the battery is also used as a backup in the power outage), allows to transfer the call to another handset, intercom to any handset (handy for the townhome), message waiting indicator.

Summary: Terrible Reception, Does not work w/ DSL!?!?
Review: I had been excited about this phone all year after hearing about the new features. I bought the phone at Amazon the first days it was available and waited in anticipation to get the phone set up. Unfortunately it is with great disappointment that I am returning the phone today. I have had several conversations with VTech support due to the TERRIBLE static I was receiving while sitting next to the base, and the fact that the phone would randomly lose connection with the base, while sitting NEXT to the base. I finally had one rep tell me this phone was known to have a problem if you have DSL! Today I am packing the phone up for a return, much to my chagrine!

Summary: Great Features, Great Function
Review: I recently bought this phone and 3 additional handsets (a total of 4). We live in a 4-level house with concrete floors and needed an extension on each floor. The setup was completely painless - it worked exactly as described in the manual. All handsets found the base immediately and worked fine. The handsets have a jack for a headset, a speakerphone function which works great, and a mute button which is a feature I had a tough time finding on other other cordless phones. Sound quality is excellent - I really can't tell the difference from a land line. The menu interface was intuitive to me. I had no issues with set up and use. Two things to be aware of: 1) The range appears to be somewhat limited. It had no trouble going through our concrete floors, but the sound started to break up less than 100 feet from my front door. This was affected by the presence of other buildings between base and handset. If long range is important to you, look for another phone. 2) Telephone numbers saved in the handsets will not synchronize with each other - you have to enter numbers in all of the handsets individually. I believe that some other products offer this functionality but the V-Tech does not. All things considered, I am satisfied with this product. It satisfied my requirement for a cordless system with multiple handsets, good sound quality, acceptable range, a decent speakerphone, and a mute button. Lastly, it doesn't interfere with our 802.11 wireless network.

Summary: You rather buy a cell phone!
Review: I was never happy with this phone from the get go. One handset never worked since it couldn't locate the base no matter what you did. The second handset seemed to work great, but the person on the other side kept on complaining the voice was breaking up. Most of the people felt that I was calling them from a cell phone. My wife refused to use the phone (even with its great looks!) so I had to return it and get a 2.4GHz phone. You rather buy a cell phone atleast you get better range then this one.
