Summary: Horrendous audio quality/clarity
Review: Audio quality is so bad, it's nearly impossible to understand the caller. I bought a pair and promptly returned them. My advice: save yourself the return postage and choose a different pair.

Summary: POOR RANGE-POOR SOUND QUALITY
Review: I am sorry to say that the range on these even in the 5 mile range is no where near expected. I have not been able to transmit or receive further than 1 mile.

Summary: Poor 2-way-radio choice
Review: I bought a pair after losing an older T5200 (also from Motorola) which is not manufactured anymore. I figured that the new & more expensive model (which also has 1 Watt compared to 1/2 watt of the T5200) should work as good or better.

I was very disapoointed. Very poor sound quality. Audio is not clear and in many cases has breaks. I still have one T5200 left (I lost 1 out of 2) - eveyone in my family wants to use the older unit as the new T5820 does not perform. Plus, I paid for the T5200 half of what I paid for thr T5820...

I recommend not to buy this product. Go for the new cheaper & better T5720 (1 Watt as well, compact, great sound quality. The only limitation - no vibration alert. See my review on it).

Summary: Motorola T5820 2-Way Radio NiCd
Review: I bought these to keep in touch with my friends snowboarding, and paintballing. I would have been better off paying for airtime on my cell phone instead of purchasing these. The audio quality on these are average to poor at best. They are not what I expected fom the Motorola corporation. A great disappointment.

Summary: Not good enough for Motorola
Review: I have been using radios for severals years for traveling and other general purposes. These radios are good in terms of range and features BUT the speakers are poor and have to repeat messages often because of poor sound quality and poor volume. In a mall or anyplace with background noise, forget about hearing your call. Count on the flimsy plastic swivel clip breaking and having to purchase decent belt clips. Have been through this twice. Earlier Motorola FRS radios were great but it's been downhill. (no difference between FRS and GMRS really) Try the Cobras w/ compass and other stuff - they are slightly larger but the sound quality is great.

Summary: Decent Range, Terrible Customer Service
Review: I have found my radios to work 3- 4 mile on GMRS mode. The 1st time my wife and I used them both of the belt clips broke. I have e-mailed motorola R.E. this matter and asked for replacement belt clips. And have never recieved a response.

Summary: Excellent product for the price
Review: I have used ICOM IC-4008A FRS-type radios for the past several years and wanted an output power upgrade for distance. The black ("graphite") T5820 units were on special, and after the rebate I paid $60 for the pair.
Thay have been satisfactory for all the uses I have, with one modification and one upgrade. The upgrade was to install the rechargeable battery packs, which allowed me to do the modification, which was sealing the hole in the battery compartment cover.
The Motorolas have worked for me during beach and boating use, and during hiking. They have been used in the rain and occasionally splashed with no harm done. The speakers are made from polymer and sealed around their periphery (according to the factory guy I talked to) and the battery compartment cover has a rubber gasket, which is hard to see since it is black on black. This leaves the hole in the battery compartment cover. The hole allows the cover's latch to be opened, but also is an entry point for water. I solved this by going to the nicad rechargeable batteries (so the batteries do not have to be changed frequently) and also attaching a piece of black vinyl electrician's tape over the latch hole and past the bottom edge of the cover a bit. This closes the hole and keeps the battery compartment cover from falling off if the unit is dropped.
With these changes, the radios are great for my purposes. I have obtained about 3 miles over the water - they may go further, but I haven't had a way to test them over 3 miles.
I like them so much that I am buying another pair with the nicad battery option.

Summary: how embarrassing for motorola!
Review: I picked up a pair of these just before a long roadtrip thinking that we could use them to talk between cars, but on every point they came up weak.
Range: Even in GMRS mode these things couldn't talk between two cars no more than a half mile apart in clear sight of each other.
Clarity: horrible - I couldn't understand the speech most of the time.
Two other features that were troublesome were the inability to lock a channel/code combination and the big dumb volume control which invariably dialed down to zero every time we put the radios in our pockets.
Battery: I picked up the optional two-radio drop-in charger and the batteries were NiCd instead of the much better and longer life (and no memory) NiMH that everyone else uses and the charger was a dumb trickle charger, not a smart charger that actually told you when the radios were charged.
Conclusion: What a joke. If I were Motorola I'd track down everyone who bought these, apologize personally and give them a real radio and a real charging system. I'm going with Cobra next time, which is sad since my t6320 was such a great radio.

Summary: Poor audio quality!
Review: I purchased a pair of Motorola T5820 radios to keep in touch with my children playing in the neighborhood. I was expecting a high-quality product from the likes of Motorola. Boy was I wrong! The audio clarity of these radios is terrible... to the point that you cannot understand the other party. Audio quality is muffled, muddy, and distorted. Also annoying is the fact that when you key the mic, there is a slight delay (~500ms) before the other radio's squelch is opened resulting in the first few syllables lost during transmission. Being an amateur radio (ham) operator, I am very familiar with the operation of hand-held radios. With these radios I found myself continuously saying "please repeat..." to the other party. Steer clear of these radios!

Summary: Awesome and EXTREMELY sturdy
Review: I purchased the T5710 model. I take these radios camping with me to stay in touch with the family. I stopped along the highway to check something and left the radio on top of the car. As I was driving off the radio fell off the top of the car and into the path of an oncoming 18 wheeler. The truck ran over the radio. The radio still worked perfectly. The range could be a little longer but i am very satisfied with my radios!!
