Summary: Motorola FR60 2-Way Radio
Review: I am very pleased with the clarity of communications with these radios. I chose Motorola because of reputation and ruggedness. I chose the FR60 over the FR50 since it had the 38 call group codes which I thought would be useful around town. I think the FR60 has the "essentials" and didn't feel I needed the additional features of the 280SLK. I have tried them at an amusement park with a lot of metal structures around and a lot of background noise and they worked great. I did have trouble in a large mall if we got several walls between us.

Summary: Excellent range and clarity
Review: I bought a pair of the FR60 radios as a birthday present to myself, after much debate. I wanted Motorola because of their stellar reputation, but I couldn't afford to go all out. This radio is an excellent choice for people who want Motorola without breaking the bank. I think the quality of the radio can be summed up with one anecdote...my 6-year-old son and I ran for dinner one night and brought a radio, leaving the other with my wife and 4-year-old daughter. If you've seen the latest McDonald's commercial, you'll know what's coming...my son held the radio up to the counter, and my daughter was able to place her order from home. Now, at four years old, it can be difficult to decipher what she's saying in person, but the cashier had a crystal-clear conversation with my daughter, who was 1.5 miles away, sitting in our kitchen. That's clarity! We take the radios everywhere now...little league games, the beach, the mall, name it. Sure, it's a gadget, and I could lead a hapy life without it, but it sure is fun to use and an incredible convenience! Buy this radio...or buy many for everyone in your family!

Summary: Perfect for outings!
Review: I mostly use my fr60's for paintball, so the privacy codes are a must. The privacy codes not only keep other random people from blocking your transmissions with their chatter, it also keeps the opposing team from listening to you talk with your teammates! I've also used them for multi-car road trips, and have never had a problem with distance or reception quality (something I *did* have problems with in a cheaper brand FRS radio my family bought)

Summary: Great product, but where's my mail-in rebate
Review: I purchased two radios for our trip to Baja. I found them extremely useful for keeping in touch when we became separated in town. The reception clarity is much superior to that of standard CB-type walkie talkies. However, the mail-in rebate was part of my motivation to purchase these particular products. It's been three months now and Motorola still hasn't delivered the rebate. Not what I would have expected from a company with Motorola's reputation.

Summary: Not a bad little transceiver
Review: I received a pair of the FR60s for Christmas, and I had my first real chance to try them out yesterday. The sound quality is good. Nowhere near a cell phone, but certainly easy to understand. The controls are pretty easily figured out even without a manual. The range in city with buildings, houses, etc. in the way is roughly 3/4 of a mile. I'm sure at some place like an amusement park or in the woods or beach the range would be greater.

Two minor drawbacks. One, the beeps emitted when changing channels or features are unusually loud, and there is no mechanism for turning them off or reducing the volume. Second, the range while driving inside my car was greatly reduced. Once I stepped out of the car, I was able to communicate easily. I wouldn't trust them for car to car communications on a road trip unless I were close enough to see the other car.

I haven't been to an amusement or some other place I would expect heavier use of these Family Radio Service frequencies, but so far I have yet to hear anyone else on any channel, other than the person I was speaking to. This is not like CB radio where there is a constant chatter on every channel. And even if there were a fair amount of traffic, these radios have the filter feature of the codes. Anyone not trasmitting with that specific code is squelched out.

One thing to keep in mind about these FRS radios, just because you are using a code, does not mean your communications are private. The code acts as a filter to prevent you from hearing unwanted transmissions. It does not scramble your communications or make them private. Anyone else with an FRS radio can hear them fine if tuned to the right channel.

Summary: Excellent Product - I'd purchase one for everybody I know
Review: I recently purchased the motorola fr60 and let me tell you it's great. I was trying to decide between the fr50 and fr60 both are exactly alike except for the privacy codes. I live in a major city so I would recommend the fr60 just for the privacy function. The range seems to live up to the 2 mile limit. Althought I have noticed a few times in the city among high buildings this may be reduced. The call tones are great. This allows you to ring the other radio such as a telephone. I would recommend this to families, skiers, friends just out and about shopping. It's a great way to communicate and there are no charges such as a cell phone. It's a compact radio. So ladies it is great for the purse. Guys don't worry there is a belt clip and that works well too. Good luck with your purchase!!!!

Summary: great for the family vacation
Review: I recently purchased two radios before going on vacation to the beach. I wasn't quite sure how I would use them. My husband and our girls soon learned we couldn't do without them. While some of us were at the beach, we could radio back to the beach house for anything we had forgotten. While bike riding as the four of us got separated, we radioed our position. We even felt comfortable leaving our girls in the house, ages 6 and 10 in the beach house while we went for walks on the beach. The reception was perfect, totally more conveinent than cell phones. We will definitely bring them along for our hiking trip to Colorado in the fall.
