Summary: they do nothing
Review: I just bought these today and I can't wait to return them. Perhaps I've been spoiled by Bose, perhaps they just don't work. I can barely perceive any difference in the sound - just not worth the cost. They actually made me appreciate the earbuds that came with my iPod.

Summary: Great product but there's a bit of a learning curve.
Review: I've had these for 6 months now and use them every day. They do take getting used to. It comes with 3 sizes of earbuds and it is very important to find the right fit; too small or large will will ruin the noise cancelling feature. It is also key to wear the cord the right way (it's in the directions!). The noise canceling works well and also doubles as a nice amp for MP3 devices. It made driving bearable when my muffler broke and also kept me sane when working in an office trailer on a construction site. Wherever I go, my iPod and Sony noise canceling headphones will be with me.

Summary: Great product!
Review: I have been using these pair of headphones for more than a year, and I must say that I never regreted since the day that I bought them. For those people that say that they are uncomfortable, I must say that I do not agree. I wear them all the time: when I am walking, doing exercise and sleeping and nothing has happened. The noise cancelling works fine too, It works magnificently. Ever since the first time I wore them on the plane, I must have them when I am traveling or it will drive me nuts (and I do not have to put the volume very high either). I also use it a lot when I am studying, becuase my the place I live is very noisy and this has been my salvation. This product is small and efficient, I really recommend it.

Summary: I should have listened!
Review: Wow, I didn't believe the negative reviews, so I went and bought one of these things.... It was useless! this thing is a complete waste of money (hope I can return it) I have a 10 year old Noisebuster NB-DX, and it does a better job of noise cancellation. Turning the nc11 on and off made no differenece at all to either low frequency or high frequency noise, other than adding a little hiss when it was on.

Summary: Bring back the MDR NC-10 !!!
Review: This is a big step back from the NC 10 which was basically the same except it sounds much better and seems to cancel better too.
The design of the 11 has a restriction in the tube where the 10 was very open which seems like the likely cause of choked and bumpy highs and less openended bass response.The idea of a volume control was OK but it should be a locking type 'cause it would get moved unintentionally.
The listen-through feature should have stayed. oh well...

Summary: Great for Air Travel
Review: I really like these headphones. The last pair of noise canceling headphones were big, bulky, heavy,and pressed too hard on my ears during long flights. The NC-11's avoid all of those problems. As a bonus, they boosted the sound levels of my mp3 player that extra bit. They are comfortable to wear, sound great, weigh practically nothing and can fit in my pocket. Kudos to the Sony engineers on this one!

Summary: Noise Canceling Feature does not work
Review: I just purchased these while in Japan. I was ready for a noise free - or somewhat reduced noise - flight back to the US. I was saddened to find out that the noise canceling feature had little to no effect. Even worse, there was almost no bass being reproduced making the music sound very weak. My first generation iPod earphones where better than my these expensive Sony's.

Review: I travel frequently and have used the Bose headsets frequently on airplanes. While I have enjoyed the level of noise reduction from the Bose, but I wanted something smaller (not over the ear). I think the Sony headphones are an excellent alternative. The earbud design does reduce much of the ambient noise that the technology is not designed to do, such as other people talking. Plus the technology materially reduces the engine noise. I recently watched a movie on a flight and could hear everything clearly, whereas with normal headphones I had to turn the volume way up to even understand the words. The Sony headphones are also very comfortable. I'm not sure about the benefits outside of an airplane, though.

Summary: Description fits the Aiwa, too
Review: This product claims similar benefits to the Aiwa noise cancelling phones, which I bought from Radio Shack for.... Sony's website claims 70% (10 dB) reduction from 50-1000Hz and offers a 3 month warranty. The Aiwa unit claims to cut noise from 40-2000Hz. It unfolds and sits on the external ear. It seemed comfy for the few minutes that I had it on & it cut out about 40-60% of sound from about 50-1500 Hz (sitting by my piano). I didn't have a dB meter on my outer ear--the reduction "subjectively" sounded like 50%. I turned on my vacuum cleaner and found that it did significantly tune out lower frequency noise but left annoying higher frequencies for me to deal with (that's Beethoven, Bach and Brahms!). I don't know the frequency range of jet noise, so I can't say much concerning their use aboard a 727. I conducted a little experiment, in which I found some inexpensive Sony ear bud phones and covered them with around-the-ear protection muffs (hardware store), usu. rated at ~25-28 dB noise reduction. I would have to rate the combination a tremendous success irrespective of price!

Review: Used infrequently on airplane flights for four months; suddenly the right channel went dead and remains so. Unfortunately, this quality or lack thereof appears to be a new Sony characteristic. My eight month old XBR TV has also failed. Go Bose for quality or Aiwa for value.
