Summary: Phone Rates 5 AT&T Rates 1
Review: I absolutely love this phone. Sad to say I'm on hold with AT&T right now to try and return it. I actually bought two of these phones for myself and spouse.
I've been on hold (between being switched to different operators) for hours. I was just told that their system is down so I have to call back in a couple of hours. I figure I'll just keep on dialing and holding until their system comes back up. This is so outrageous.
I had no idea their services were so poor.
I asked about them matching the Amazon $120 rebate, because I read online that someone else had received a 'price match' rebate. They said no. I asked if they had any news about changing their internet access pricing, which is currently way too high, so high that I purchased 1,084 kilobytes, that's right, kilobytes, for $7.99 per month. I don't know what I was thinking-I can't access the internet for a couple of minutes, let alone a month, for that limit. I asked if they had any plans to get unlimited internet access like T-Mobile for $20 a month, naturally, they had no idea, and my only options were their current plan.
So, guess I will return the phones (if their system comes up). I was thinking about purchasing the phone from a store and then going with T-Mobile. I wish T-Mobile would pick up this phone, then would be perfect!
So, check out costs of using this great featured phone before you sign up with AT&T.
AT&T just told me that they would have to take down my info and process it when their system is up. Sheesh. Also, I didn't have a return shipping label in the box I received from AT&T, so they have put me on hold with another department so that they can send me a shipping label. I asked if this is so I don't have to pay shipping and was told no, this will insure it goes to the right place. I asked why they couldn't just give me the return address over the phone, and was told only the sales department has that specific information. Well, am being switched again, need the "internet ordering" department...

Summary: Top Phone
Review: This is the first phone I have purchased, having always had company phones. I could not resist the features, and it certainly lives up to advertising. I unlocked it within a few hours of buying it, am using my TMobile SIM and it works perfectly. User interface is different for a phone, but having had numerous iPaq's I very quickly got used to it. Battery life is a little limited, but carry a spare. Display is spectacular, sound is excellant. MP3's and video's work perfect. Only downside so far is difficult to see in the bright Sun.

Summary: Good Phone...Could be better...
Review: I will be purchasing this phone shortly. Everything I have read on this phone tells me it is a good phone, though there are a few drawbacks that could be improved. Few things of note for those wondering about this phone:

1. This is a Dual Band Phone (1800/1900). AT&T sacrificed the 900mhz band to increase the signal strength of the 1900 band. The mpx200 is available overseas in Tri-Band mode though. Another difference between the US version and international versions is that the AT&T US version is application unlocked...which allows you to run any program you want on the phone, some international versions are locked.

2. There is an issue apparently with the jog dial...it can be difficult to activate the voice dialing feature (this is done by pushing the jog dial in) as the job dial moves a little too freely...causing you to change the volume accidently...

3. If you have more than 200 contacts in your phone book the external caller id will not display for a few rings as it has to search through the contacts. A work around for this is to move the contacts to the sim card, those display fine though there is a limit of 250 contacts on the sim card.

3. For those looking at all these posts that are commenting on AT&T's horrible customer service...there is an alternative, though it is a little tricky (only for the more tech-saavy people out there). Research on the net how to sim unlock the phone. When you get it unlocked switch the SIM card over to a Tmobile SIM card. Setup Tmobile service. They have better customer service and better data plans available ($19.99 for unlimited internet). Please note though: Unlocking a phone is not for most people. Do not attempt unless you know what you are doing...

I have done my research on several PDA/Smartphone sites that have covered the mpx200 for the past 2-3 weeks...I suggest you do the same research if you have concerns about the above items or anything else about the phone...

Summary: Good phone, lousy Amazon service
Review: The phone seems to be pretty good, but buying it from Amazon was a hassle.

The phone arrived without any paperwork about my AT&T account. Upon calling AT&T, I discovered that they didn't have an account for me at all. I then spent several hours on the phone with different AT&T reps to get the phone activated.

Amazon also doesn't allow you to port your number from another carrier to AT&T. All you need to do in order to do this is buy the phone with activation from Amazon and then call AT&T customer service or visit an AT&T store. They can start the porting process and give you a new SIM card with your ported phone number.

Summary: Great phone, but there are some negatives
Review: Hey everybody. I've owned the MPx200 for about a month now and have enjoyed it very much. I'm extremely glad I bought it and plan to get a few years use out of it, but there are several negatives that I wish I had known about before I bought the phone.

1. Poor volume control. There is a toggle switch on the side of the phone that will allow the user to adjust the phone's volume. This is fine, but there are only ~5 different volume levels. When listening to music, the loudest volume setting is often too loud with some songs and the next level down is just too darn quiet. I wish the volume control was more sensitive.

2. No Playlists. I use my phone as an MP3 player quite often. There are several negatives here. First of all, the Windows Media player on the phone does not offer playlists. Yet another inconvienance is that it will not allow you to successfully pause the song. If you pause the song and immediately restart playing, it will pickup where you paused, however, if you want for any extended period of time, you're stuck having to start the song over.

3. Awkward software. First of all, navagating around the software is very stop and go. Many times, I'll press a button to do a simple operation and the phone will take several seconds to respond. Furthermore, getting around in the software seems awkward, as you press a "Programs" button only to receive a list of nine options to which you access by pressing numbers 1-9. By pressing the number 9, you get another screen with 8 more new options. So's about it for navigating around the software. One last software problem was that after three weeks of usage, I managed to completely lock up the phone. My phone was working fine when I went to bed, but when I woke up, I found my phone stuck on the "HelloMoto" startup screen. I was forced to Hard Reset my phone, losing all data. Of course Motorola tech support was anything but helpful and told me to call AT&T, my cell phone service. When I called AT&T, they told me to call Motorola. I love that.

4. No camera, no bluetooth.

5. Runs Windows Smartphone 2002. Windows Smartphone 2003 has already begun to come out.

6. No Play/Pause/Back/Forward buttons on external phone. In order to perform any MP3 player functions, with the exception of volume control, you have to use the phone's software. It would be nic to have a physical button, similar to many MP3 players, that would allow you to pause, rewind, etc. a song without having to use the phones' software.

7. There is voice-activated dialing, but the button you have to press in order to use the voice activated dialing is the same button as the volume control. Much more often than not, I end up changing the volume rather than activating voice dialing.

8. Menu and hot buttons seem awkwardly laid out. I have seen other phones running the Windows Smartphone and their button layout seems to be much more user-friendly.

Don't get me wrong here people. I really do enjoy the phone, hence the 4 Stars. The connectivity of the Windows operating system and the expandable memory slot is great. Many, many positives, but there were some negatives that I felt no one was mentioning.

Summary: Great phone but HORRIBLE reception
Review: This phone is awesome, but like so many of the other reviewers have said, AT&T GSM service is HORRIBLE. I would say that 95% of the time, I don't get reception. AT&T customer service is the pits - it took hours of my time to get any sort of help both activating the phone and with a battery issue. It's a shame because if it weren't for having to stick with AT&T service, this phone would be perfect. I still have a few more days to decide if I'll return it or not but I would not recommend anyone who can wait for another Smartphone to get this one... it is too frustrating not being able to use the darn thing!

Summary: Great phone, bad customer service
Review: Awesome phone. It is everything you read here. I bought phones from Amazon before and never had such a frustating experience. I received it 4 days ago and it cannot be activated yet. AT&T customer support cannot deal with Amazon activations until they go through the system. AT&T has been having activation delays on GSM phones and, after hours on hold just to talk to them, they cannot do anything except activating at a store. If you activate at a store (quick 30 minute thing) you cannot get the $120 rebate that brought you to Amazon in the first place. Amazon "wireless" customer service is not open on weekends. Once I finnally reach them on Monday morning the best solution an "order specialist" could offer was to wait, call AT&T again :) or return the phone... So if you need this phone to be working soon, buy it somewhere else.

Summary: Dead On Arrival
Review: Ordered an MPx200 from Amazon last week and it promptly showed up alright. But it's dead on arrival! The main display is blank!

Called Motorola support (1 866 289 6686) and it puts you in the waiting queue and then after a while it drops the call. It did this half a dozen times and finally connected me to a guy, who couldn't help and asked me to go to a service center.

One note for those who plan to use this phone overseas: This phone is dual-band, not tri-band as I had thought. There are tri-band version in other places however.

Summary: Sucks if you are an existing ATTWS customer and want to keep
Review: 3 stars because of the cost to existing customers.
I did a bunch of research on this before I went to buy.
I went to several stores in town.
The AT&T store told me that because I was already a customer the best price they could do was $400.
Best buy told me that their price of 269 would have another 150 bucks added to it as well if it was not a new activation. The customer service rep at Best Buy said that AT&T was losing a lot of business to other phone because of that.
The amazon deal is only good if you are a NEW customer wanting to get locked into a 2 year contract otherwise you can't get the rebates from them.

It was kind of cool to play with the working demo at the AT&T store, but I could not figure out how to get the @ sign in using the keyboard. @ is kind of important when entering IM or email addresses!

So I decided not to get it. Probably a good thing after all of the reviews here about the GSM network.
We shall see what happens after the 24th of November and number portability takes off, hopefully the price will come down.

Summary: Cannot reccommend ATT GSM
Review: I will start off by saying that a phone can only be as good as its provider, and this phone's failing is the ATT network. I live in the RDU area of NC, an area where you would think coverage *should* be pretty good. However, my GSM signal strength is spotty, and even at work at the top of an 11-story building the signal is not maximal and ATT will frequently roam over to Cingular (this is OK cuz it's free for ATT, but its indicative of ATT's inability to put together a cohesive network in one of the nations highest-technology regions).

In contrast to ATT wireless, the phone itself is of a wonderful design. A lot of thought went into the features and construction: internal antenna takes the clamshell concept to its logical end, the memory expansion option is universal rather than proprietary, and the data connet uses a simple USB cable just like other peripherals (eg, I can use the same cable for my Canon camera and my phone). The display is gorgeous and bright, and the outside LED display is easy to read in all lighting conditions (actually, the main display reads very well in all lighting conditions, and only gets dim in direct sunlight).

With the Mpx200, Motorola displays itself to be very evolved in its phone-design concepts, and the Smartphone concept IS the future of cellular/PDA technology. Unfortunately, ATT has yet to prove that it can be a *provider* of future cellular service.
