Summary: Piece of junk!!!!
Review: I have two of this; bought one for my Dad, one for myself. My Dad complained about it not being able to play discs (DVDs). Now I have both. Mine worked for about 6 months, and now the damn thing no longer works. [...]

Summary: Works brilliantly for nine months until...
Review: I loved the system out of the box. Even though it takes as long as twenty seconds to switch CDs, the sound is great, it's easy to set up, looks stunning and very affordable.

Nine months later the love affair is over. I have a dud on my hands. CDs play but DVDs don't (cleaning has no effect). The store where I bought it wont take it back and the Sony service center is an hour from my house outside of New York City.

Summary: Uses proprietary speaker terminals plugs!
Review: I purchased the Sony DAV C770 new and when I openned the box; I just could not believe that they would use proprietary speaker connection into the unit. To me; that means that it complicates the installation of the system; because I would need to splice wires together - I wanted a total in the box solution; not so more work to connect with my current configuration. I did not do anything else but pack it back up and return this unit!

Purchased a Harden Kardom box system for an additional $800 but no custom proprietary connections! I looked at a Yamaha but the different was only $300 and the salesman told me go with Harden Kardon. The unit is alot bigger, is black and took alot of space which was a negative but was the only system that was not proprietary connects. It also did not have SACD and only had one dvd player which was a bummer. It is a component package and requires turning on the dvd player. I have almost all Sony products: WEGA TVs, Sony audio, CD and VCRs.

I really like the Dream Machine chrome and the small dvd receiver unit but with the proprietary speaker wires which were a much thin gauge then 16 gauge; it might be 20 gauge. The connectors were color coded which was another turn off but I could see someone who was not into audiophile might find it helpful but it was not a good thing to do to a system I really wanted but with such cheap hook ups; it felt cheap! Just really would appreciate if Sony would stick to its previous products which I have are excellent and I just felt they are missing the point in cheaping their products! I like my Harden Kardon but I wish I could stay with Sony!

Summary: DVDs STUCK
Review: I too have had problems with this system- My DVDs got stuck (i only had it for less than a year)- i sent it back to get repaired- only to have the machine come back STILL BROKEN!!!!!

The sony repair phone line is atrocious- I spend at least 20 min on hold before i speak to someone who has to bump me up to the next level.

Dont buy this system- its not worth the hassle.

Summary: Wow, I havent had all these problems
Review: It is a great sounding system and I haven't had any of the serious problems I have read here and I bought it two years ago. I bought it with the price and brand name as the major deciding factors. I realized the next step up in features/quality was $300-$500 more.
The problems I do have with it is......only one set of componant plugs and that is only "out" no in. You will be forced to use S-video or standard composite for any "inputs"..........slow slow disk eject/disk change feature. It pretty much kills the point of the shuffle option for the 5 disks........Has problems reading any mp3's burned to disk.......seems to run hot, I get pixalations and freezing on alot of my DVD's and I think its because the disk gets warm in the player............subtitles do pop up uninvited, but it is a minor annoyance. Besides these things, I like the system with no major complaints. I do like the ease of hookup and the fact all the unit is one box. It is pretty cool looking. If you are a hardcore elctronics guy, you will run into alot of limitations on this system, but most people should be very happy with the prefromance of this...............unless you have those major problems others have had.

Summary: Love it...
Review: Let me first admit, I've only had the c770 installed for about a week now, having watched 4 DVD's on it thus far, in addition to normal TV watching and of course the NFL playoffs. Saying that, I've yet to experience any of the problems I've read about in other reviews. So far I absolutely love this system.

I've had an RCA surround system for about 5 years and upgraded to this. The C770 puts my old system to shame. The sound quality is a major improvement.

I did find the instructions a little hard to understand. I actually stopped trying and just hooked up.

Set up of the speakers took a little time to get just the right balance. It was easy to do, just time consuming.

I do not like the remote. The buttons are too small, the TV buttons are too few (no go-back for instance), the TV channel up/down buttons are not intuitive, and most of all, you have to switch the button on the side back and forth between TV and DVD to change from adjusting channels to adjusting volume. In my opinion, the volume buttons on a home theater remote should always adjust the volume on the home theater. If I was going to use any other speakers why would I bother buying a home theater?

One note about the NFL playoffs, the "game" mode of the surround sound is awesome for watching football!

Summary: Worked for a while...
Review: Sony was one of the best products you could ever buy but this one seems to be something of a misfit. My box never took too kindly to a recorded MP3 mix (super trax) & the changer has recently croaked... 5 of my favourite CDs are parked inside the unit! The 1-year warranty was done several months ago so I'm now planning to attack the problem with my handy-man toolbox. Would advise you look elsewhere!

Summary: Worked fine for almost a year..
Review: The same thing happened to me, and I have read numerous reviews online that the system stops reading DVDs after a while. I thought it was a fluke for a while and waited a bit too long. My one year warranty expired and now it doesn't play dvds at all, even brand new ones. It's odd that CDs work fine.

Don't bother. Sony has lost me as a customer. When you pay $500 for something, you expect it to work longer than one year.

Summary: Sony sucks - Never buy a Sony
Review: This expensive piece of junk looks good, but is a real headache to own. DVDs always seem to get choked on this system alone - the same DVDs work perfectly elsewhere. Then on top of it my DVDs got stuck. Tried calling Sony but never got a satisfactory answer - they want you to always keep it powered off with the plug pulled out from the socket when not in use - they want you not to put in more than one DVD at a time though its a 5 DVD changer. It is horrible... I will never buy a Sony again, and neither should you
