Summary: Best in its Class
Review: It takes little effort to determine that this unit is by far the best in its category, however those people who want to know some more specific pros and cons I have created a brief list:

Sound

* The sound this system produces is one of its strongest selling points. Simply put, it's way ahead of its competition.

This is mainly due to the fact that the sound is split 3 ways (low frequency, mid frequency, and high frequency bandwidths are handled by one speaker each). This results in a vastly superior sound quality by comparison to the usual one-way or two-way split speaker systems.

It should also be noted that the low frequency signal is delivered to the speaker via a separate cable, so as to ensure minimum loss of signal purity between the unit and the speakers.

* The 'super surround sound' feature, whilst cursed with a ridiculous name, is actually extremely impressive, and not 'over the top' like most other implementations of this feature (read 'way too much distorted base'). Basically when this is turned on, the sub's kick in with surprising force. The speakers produce a surprising amount of clear, crisp base for their diminutive size.

* Sound is clean and distortion free throughout the entire signal range, even with the 'super surround sound' feature on. Many small systems (like its competition) distort quickly once base is turned up and the volume is cranked up a bit. No distortion here though.

Physical Characteristics

* The speakers fit just about anywhere due to there slim profile. The low frequency speaker is located on the outward-facing side of each speaker, which is perfectly ok since low frequency noise does not require directional positioning.

* The main unit is very slim, and about a foot deep. I can't foresee any issues finding space for this - the whole thing is quite tiny.

* Design: Very sleek. Most people I've asked think it's by far the best looking system they've seen. The half-mirrored finish on the front of the main unit looks really classy, and the display that appears behind it is still readable even in sunny rooms. The button panel is simple and uncluttered, which adds to the units overall minimalist appearance.

* The remote control leaves a bit to be desired, simply because all the buttons are the same size and shape. Having said that, it is small and easy enough to use - all major functions can be accessed directly with a button, and more advanced functions are accessed through menus on the display.

Performance

* As previously mentioned, the sound is outstanding. It sounds clearer than many systems twice its cost.

* The unit takes 5 discs (basically stacked on top of each other), each sitting on their own tray. Changing discs could be faster, however the speed at which a disc can be changed with this 'stack' system is always limited. To change from disc 1 to disc 5 takes about 3-5 seconds.

* There is a 'dimmer' function, which dims the display brightness. This is useful for people who like to fall asleep listening to music but can't stand the brightness from the display. When set to 'dim', it is very dim indeed.

* Another useful function is 'check CD'. Basically pressing this button ejects every disc in a staggered order, so you can see the CDs loaded in each tray. Useful when you put all 5 discs in and can't remember which disc is in which tray.

The Down Side

It's hard to find a down side to this system. For what you pay, you get so much. No system is perfect however, and a few things could be better:

* The clock does not display when the unit is switched off. You can display the clock briefly by pressing the 'clock' button on the remote, however it would be nice to have it showing all the time. I believe the reason it does not show all the time is purely visual - the half-mirrored finish on the unit's front panel looks beautiful without any display behind it.

* Volume is displayed in decibels (dB), with a '-' symbol in front. This leads many people to think that they are setting the volume to a negative number. For example '-50dB'. However, in engineering terms displaying volume as '-50dB' is technically correct! Many people criticize displaying volume this way simply because they don't understand it. Either way, to avoid confusion for lay-people, Panasonic probably should have gone with conventional terminology here.

* Speaker cable length is too short. I'm guessing (roughly) that it's probably only about 1.8-2m long. Certainly not long enough to split the speakers across a room (e.g. having a speaker in each corner). They are easily extended if you are familiar with very simple cable joining.

Overall

Just buy it. It's by far the best in its class and you won't regret it.

Review: We purchased this Panasonic mini-system because of its relatively low price while providing all the important features we were seeking. We expected to be well pleased, instead we were very pleasantly surprised. The system is great, does everything we wanted it do and does it better than our older much more expensive system. In addition, the size turned out to be an unanticipated but significent plus in our somewhat overcrowded entertainment center.
