Summary: Ok for the money, but....
Review: This isn't at all a bad cd player. However, there IS a difference in sound quality between personal cd players, even among the Sony players. I had one of the original discman units from way back when. Whenever I compare it to this unit, it blows it away. This model pales in comparison against it's predecessor. My guess is that sony still has the capability to make a better player, but cutting the cost meant cutting out top quality. I recently purchased one of the newer units, one with Super ESP2 and a wider dynamic range...-MUCH more impressive. Still, not quite up to par with the older ones, but it's awfully close. ESP still has its problems, but for the sound quality I have found in this new unit (blue) it's worth the tradeoff. My point is this. Listen to a higher end sony, and a lower end unit. There is a cutoff somewhere and there can be a remarkable difference.

Summary: Good Sound, Good Features, Good Price
Review: I bought this Discman from Amazon a couple weeks ago as a birthday gift for my mother. I liked the price and it seemed to be of good quality. Once the Discman arrived, I presented it to my mother during a trip to the beach and I ended up listening to it for several hours throughout the trip.

First off, I really liked the headphones. They were very comfortable and gave off good sound. Next, I found that the Discman had many useful features. The ESP was wonderful--it would not skip even when I tried to make it skip. I listened to it for about two hours of driving in a car, with it sitting on the seat, and it did not skip once. I even knocked on the top of it a couple times, gave it a few good jolts, to see if it would skip and it didn't even stutter.

I also really liked the resume feature. If you turn the CD off in the middle of a song and leave that same CD in, then when you turn it back on, it will start up exactly where you left off. Not mindblowing, but nifty and somewhat handy.

All in all, I found the Discman to be a great buy. (And my mom has come to love it as well, as soon as I actually let her use it.) The ESP is top quality, the sound is good, there are plenty of features, the headphones are comfortable, and the price is definitely right. Highly recommended.

Summary: Very Reliable Procuct
Review: I own a Sony Discman similar to this model(only slightly different)I've owned it for 3 years and it has never given me any problems whatsoever(even with heavy daily use) It's surprisingly durable!I've accidentally dropped mine 3 times(twice on a hardwood floor..clumsy me) and it still works! It sounds great!Lots of great features(I especially like the program memory)The ESP function comes in handy for jogging or even bumpy car rides...it never skips a beat!I reccommend this product to anyone! It's one of the best items I've owned. Also another hint:Sony makes great portable cassette players too :)

Summary: Great features, shock protection, durability
Review: I have the car kit version (D-E446CK) and I've had it for about 4 months now, I've dropped it twice, once 5 ft on hardwood floor, the other time only about 4 ft on the floor of the school hall, it went flying down the hall a bit cuz the headphone wire got caught on someones backpack. It survived these drops (and not to mention people hitting it to test its esp) without even a scratch. I think there may be a difference in reliability between the car version and regular version, because all the reviews that say they got the car kit version are good reviews, and also read the D-E456CK reviews as well to back this up. I can use it in my pocket walking without esp on and it won't skip. the only thing ESP would be needed for is to keep it from skipping while you are trying to damage and break it. plus it sounds better with the esp off. I use koss sporta pro headphones which sound great.

Summary: Best Features ever!
Review: I received this CD player about 4 years ago and it still is running good as new! I love the 2 bass levels(Mega Bass, and Groove) they really boom the comfortable headphones. It hasn't skipped at all. Even when it fell of the couch without the ESP2 on!(probably just luck)The only thing I am dissappointed with is the fact that it doesn't come with the optional remote that controlls the entire CD player:-( Not a big loss at all though. I recomend this to anyone looking for a Discman.

Summary: Don't be fooled by looks!
Review: I always believed that Sony was the best and the leader of technology when it comes to audio especially, but now(June 16,1999), after buying the "all new Sony discman"(shown above) in late july 1998, it has greatly disappointed me in trusting Sony products. Yes,when i first bought it i thought it was "the sh*t",the best, etc. and yes, it "did" have all those cool features and good sound quality, but I surely found out that this product is definately not made for the outdoorsman, or the hiker, runner, biker, etc. to this day ive been using my discman to and from school, but around January '99 it just started to cut off and the ESP malfunctioned, as where it skips during some tracks instead of protecting it from skipping. Now dont think I'm the type of kid who runs around rocks and cliffs, or go swimming with my discman because its a Sony. Im just your regular 17yr teen who loves to listen to music everyday while walking to places. Sony replaced my discman around January and the same "sypmtoms" are appearing today, my friend has also purchased this discman,(from a different store) and she just uses it in her car...she also has the same problems. My point is don't just buy it 'cause its a Sony or its got a cool metalic look to it. Take advise from me and by something else better like and "aiwa" or "pioneer" or a magnovox.

Summary: Awesome sound, price, and features
Review: I bought this CD player about a year ago and it still works fine. In response to the reviews saying it skips occasionally.....yes it does but it doesn't happen too often. This CD player gives excellent sound and booming bass(groove).

Summary: Great player, great buy!
Review: This is a really great player! It doesn't skip, even without the esp on, and with the esp, it's indestructable. I took it with me on a class trip to Washington D.C. where it was julted, dropped, and stepped on repeatedly. Then it traveled with me throughout Europe, where it is brutally treated by all of my friends and me. We even dropped it out of one of our fourth floor hotel room windows (accedentally, of corse), and it still plays beautifully. And it doesn't suck up as much power as my first Panasonic one did. I'd definitly say that you should buy this one. It's cheap, and it's just as good as my friend's $130 Sony one (at least, about 7 of us thought so). If you're looking for a lot of player for your money, buy this player!
