Summary: ATRAC3 software is horrible!
Review: I tried the player out in the store and bought it because of the long play time and good UI for traversing the folder tree on the disk. Other players make it difficult to find a specific song. I really liked the idea of the ATRAC3 format enabling me to fit my music on a lower number of disks.

The UI is good and sound from the smaller ATRAC3 format is good, when I was able to get a disk to burn which was difficult. The software is extremely limited. It can't work with folder trees (300+ songs and they think one level of folders is sufficient?) it can't convert VBR or WMA files, takes an extremely long time to burn, and converting/burning can ONLY be done with the included software. Forget about using your favorite burning software. So unless you're willing to deal with the large hassles, don't buy this player because of the ATRAC3 feature. It just isn't ready for prime time.

The headphones are basically useless, but I'm sure they figure most people will already have ones they like. No adapter to plug into the wall, so either buy that at radio shack or use rechargable batteries if you want to use it at home or work.

It IS a decent MP3 player, but a tad overpriced considering the promised software and optimized format are not quite there. If Sony will ever update the software, my rating will go up.

Summary: Good product
Review: I'm very picky when it comes to CD players. I had my previous walkman for three and a half years. But I wanted an MP3/CD player combo. I researched and researched and I decided on this model.

I fell in love with it. It has great features. It's simple enough not to be confusing, but it does do quite a bit. The sound quality is good. It has a special bass feature, which is outstanding. It has a shuffle feature, which is very important to me. Using the software it comes with, you can burn up to 490 songs on a single CD-R. When you do that, the quality isn't as high. However, if you were in the car on a long trip, it would hardly matter (if you want a car kit with it, check out the Sony D-NE718CK; it's the same exact player only with a cool car kit, and it's $20 more). Battery life is spectacular, even on two plain AA batteries. It's just an amazing player.

I have hardly anything at all to complain about. The headphones have great sound quality, but they hurt my hears when I keep them on too long. I think that has more to do with the shape of my head. They're a bit low on padding, though. Also, my old CD player had a button in the middle (where the hole of the CD goes over) that you could press and the CD would pop up. The Sony doesn't have it. Okay, yes, it's not really a complaint, I'm just sad that I can't amuse myself by pressing the button over and over again.

Summary: Great player, not-great software
Review: I've had this CD player for a year and it works great. ATRAC3 is great - the sound is great and I can fit around 20 regular CDs onto one Atrac3 disc. The down side is the software. The first time I used it, it crashed, and it can take 2-3 hours to make one CD, be it from CDs or an MP3 collection, and some tracks don't write - and you don't find out until AFTER writing the CD. I didn't like how only MP3s can be converted to ATRAC3, as I have several WMAs. The software is frustrating because of the crashing and not writing tracks. If ATRAC3 doesn't interest you, this CD player can also play MP3 CDs and regular CDs too.

The CD player itself is great. It has a long battery life. One set of batteries lasted through a two-week vacation with constant play and more (and 3 ATRAC3 CDs was much lighter than a giant case with all my music). I've dropped it and it continues playing and doesn't skip. The sound isn't as loud as other players, but I don't like to damage my ears so it's fine for me.

The CD player is great and I reccommend it, but Sony needs to improve their SonicStage software. Otherwise, this is a good purchase.

Summary: Very good product
Review: My first mp3 CD player, and I'm quite happy with it. Have never tried the 'atrac' software, but I don't need to - machine plays all my various mp3 backup discs from even years ago with no problem. Sure beats burning every download to .wav file!

Summary: Best AA battery life, and software is OK, really!
Review: The D-NE710 and its car-ready companion, the D-NE718CK, have the longest battery life among MP3 CD players that use AA batteries. I have not owned my D-NE710 long enough to report exact data, but I compared the manuals for the leading vendors' flagship MP3 CD players before settling on the Sony D-NE710. Of course, vendors measure battery life under ideal conditions -- in other words, they lie. It is safe to assume that the lie factor is about the same, regardless of the vendor.

Why should you get a CD player that uses ordinary AA batteries, instead of one that uses "gum stick" batteries? "Gum stick" batteries are small and slim, but this means they have a lower capacity: 1400 milliampere-hours (mAh) for Sony's best "gum stick" rechargeable battery versus 2300 mAh for the best available AA recharegeable battery.

You can't just go to the corner store and buy "gum stick" batteries, either. To use a "gum stick"-equipped player while traveling, you have to carry around a battery charger or a small case holding 2 AA batteries. So much for the space and weight savings afforded by "gum stick" batteries!

Moreover, 2 pairs of the best AA rechargeable batteries cost $7.50 (look up "Lenmar PRO-415-23" on the Web; you'll also need a charger). One pair of proprietary "gum stick" batteries costs $50 (imitation) or $76 (official Sony replacement part).

But back to the D-NE710. Long battery life aside, support for ATRAC3 compression is the D-NE710's other distinguishing feature. In a nutshell, Sony's proprietary ATRAC3 scheme lets you squeeze more music onto a single CD, without sacrificing too much sound quality.

People like to complain about Sony's SonicStage software (sometimes referred to as "OpenMG Jukebox"). Sony supplies SonicStage SimpleBurner so that you can burn music to CDs in ATRAC3 format. While some might say that SonicStage SimpleBurner has limited features, I would say that it was designed to be fool-proof. (Note: I'm a software consultant by profession.) You select MP3 files from your hard drive or tracks from an audio CD. With no futher effort on your part, SonicStage SimpleBurner converts the data to ATRAC3 format and burns a CD.

What's missing from SonicStage SimpleBurner is an easy way to use WAV files stored on your hard drive. There are various work-arounds (look up "M3U2SB" on the Web), but most people haven't caught on to archiving music in WAV format anyway. (Hint: If you're going to go to the trouble of ripping your entire CD collection, why not keep the full-quality WAV files on your hard drive and generate MP3, WMA, ATRAC3, or AAC files as necessary? Smart shoppers can get a decent 160 GB hard drive for $100 net. That will hold more than 200 commercial CDs in full-quality WAV format. When the next music compression fad comes along, you won't have to re-rip your CDs!)

If you don't like SonicStage SimpleBurner, you can dispense with the ATRAC3 format and use your favorite CD burning program to produce ordinary MP3 CDs. The D-NE710 plays MP3 CDs without a problem.

One person commented that the D-NE710 is not really a "slim" CD player. That's true: the player is thick and, at almost half a pound with batteries, pretty heavy. But there aren't any true slim-and-light MP3 CD players on the market at this time. MP3 CD players from other leading vendors, including Panasonic, RCA, and Creative Labs, weigh as much as, or more than, the D-NE710. If you want the thinnest and lightest CD player, you will have to go with something that plays ordinary audio CDs, not MP3 CDs. You will also wind up with "gum stick" batteries, which, as explained above, are expensive and underpowered.

Regarding the remote control connector on the D-NE710, I remember this connector from 1990's-era Sony cassette Walkmans. I would bet that the in-line remote controls distributed with those products would work with D-NE710. Do not buy the D-NE718CK for the sake of getting a remote control; it has a bulky, car-oriented remote control device, and that device's plug covers up the CD player's headphone jack, which is adjacent to the remote control connector.

My only gripe with the D-NE710 is the "Jog Dial" control. It feels flimsier than the Jog Dial on my Sony VAIO laptop, and it isn't speed-sensitive. No matter how fast I turn the Jog Dial, the CD player cycles through the track list at the same speed. This gets annoying when you are cycling through several hundred tracks!

Overall I am impressed with my D-NE710. I hope that this detailed review, with general buying tips, will help other prospective buyers.

Note: when I refer to ripping music from audio CDs, I am assuming that you are the legitimate owner of the CDs and that you don't intend to redistribute the music inappropriately.

Summary: Ooh, shiny
Review: The only problem is that the player will start reading the disc as soon as you close the player which isn't really a problem but it can be annoying if your only changing cds.

Summary: Sony has done it again!
Review: This CD player is probably one of the best I have purchased or maybe ever will. The design is Flawless and the sound quality is excellent. I dunno wut some of you people are sayin about it being cheesy or cheap looking because it certainly is not. The last thing that would come to my mind is that the design is boring and I dont know what the last reviewer wanted the bottom of the CD player to be like, I mean cmon?! Though the Sony D-NE710 isnt as slim as some of its competitors such as the Iriver IMP350 which I own also, it still is reasonably compact and I would prefer it over the Imp350. The only tiny problem I would mention is that it does not have a backlit display which would have been very convienient. All in all I would have to say that it would be dumb not to buy this. At [this price] bucks its def. worth it.

Summary: best player out there
Review: this is my first time reviewing anything online, and the reason i feel compelled to do so is because i think that this discman is an absolute must for anyone out shopping for an mp3/cd player (Especially one for the car). i have spent quite a bit of time researching for the best cd player out there, have owned quite a few, and without a doubt this is the best one. where to start... the battery life is fantastic at 95 hours for two AA's. it's wonderfully slim and sexy, stylish and elegant in all the ways good electronics are. sound quality is great... some other discman's (panasonic), seem to sacrifice sound quality or the volume tops off at a level you cannot hear over the subway roar (not this one, this will break your ears at full volume...break them). it features fantastic antiskip... the thing will put the current song in memory after 10 seconds and stop it from skipping, making skipping virtually impossible (ie: you can hurl it at a homeless person and it will not miss a beat). the ease of switching between songs in mp3 or atrac form is unsurpassed. the id tagging here is perfect, but the big news, and the thing that makes me absolutely enthralled with this device is the jog dial. not to exaggerate, but the jog dial is the greatest invention since the typewriter... and more useful than water or air. it allows you to easily roll your way through hundreds of songs or folders in seconds. it is so simple that i am shocked other companies havent thought of this sooner. in many other players you have to tap a button a hundred times to get to the song you like... doesnt that suck? no one likes tapping!! here you roll, and its much faster and easier and looks cool as hell. what else to say? there are no problems with this discman...its perfect... it looks great, the buttons all make perfect sense in their placement, it works better than any discman i have ever seen or read about.... and if youre looking for the best you cannot do any better (Serisouly, even those more expensive ones out there arent more functional.... sure they look like miniature ufo's...but they dont have no jogdial).
enjoy it.
