Summary: Very good.
Review: Using right paper, it can produce amazing result, almost like photo developed in a photo lab.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Fast, quiet, [low cost] supplies, and great print quality.
Review: Was about to buy an ... 820, but after reading the reviews here, bought the S520. By carefully following setup instructions, was up in 15 minutes. It is fast (2 minutes to print a sunset on 8.5 x 11 paper, and about 10 seconds for a page of text). Photo quality is excellent-couldn't tell the difference whether using 94-brightness laser paper, or some Epson photo-quality inkjet paper. Prints made on the sample 4 x 6 glossy stock looked like they came from the photolab. Only problem was printing across multiple pages for a poster (2 x 2 sheets). Printer would only print 2 pages, and feed 2 blank pages. Was able to workaround by manually selecting 2 of 4 sheets at a time to print. I love this printer.

Summary: watch out if you arerunning mac OS X...
Review: Just got my new cannon s520 yesterday. After an hour or two of attempting to install software package that came with the unit on to my (also brand new) iMAC 800, could not get the two to work together.

On the phone to Canon technical support today. Turns out the "came with" s/w is no go with OS X... Must download new 4.8 MB s/w package "s520.dmg.sit" from Canon...After following my nose through their automated installation procedure for a few minutes and adding the printer to the OS X printer list, it worked!

Quality and speed seem fine.

Summary: Great printer for the money
Review: OK, I did a fair amount of research for printers in this price range and cheaper. I banged along on an old Epson 400 for years until my upgrade to XP left me without a driver. I thought about replacing it with another Epson but caught wind of too many hit and miss problems with quality control and customer service.
Setup was quite easy. The printer is quick by my standards, shooting out a text draft that to me I would not be ashamed to send to anyone. I put in a sheet of high end photo paper and was very impressed with the results, though I did not buy it for that purpose. I like using the parallel port and saving an available USB port. In addition, I put an envelope in to print, a procedure I dreaded with the old Epson. Slick as a whistle, out came a clean smudge free envelope. I like the idea of individual ink tanks though I've not had to deal with a refill. I've had the printer a few weeks now and am very happy with it! Minor negative is the output tray. It has a concave design wich was well thought out, but the lip that attaches to the printer is shallow and if bumped will detach and spill your contents. Once I found it was vulnerable, I'm now careful not to bump it. That said, I'd buy it again!

Summary: Nice little printer except for one big problem........
Review: We bought a second computer mainly for the kids and decided to get a budget printer for homework, letters, and other standard home uses. Consumer reports rated the S500(520 is the replacement) very highly so I took a chance on this one even though I am a Hewlett Packard fan since my 6 year old 660c model is still cranking away just fine.
Pros: Set up was very easy(but watch out for ink on your fingers when you open the cartridges), prints well, pictures print okay, decent speed.
Cons: Paper feed does not seem to work consistently. I can hear the printer "whirring" as though it misses latching onto the paper. I have to give the paper a push to get it through and am constantly adjusting the paper thinking it will work if I get it in just the right position. I may return the printer if it continues. Also, consider this printer only if you intend to put it on the top of a desk where it can be accessed easily. My computer desk happens to have the printer shelf on the bottom and with the flimsy paper tray hanging off, expect to kick it off a few times if you have the same set up.

Overall: For the money, if you are looking for a printer for casual, standard home use(letters, homework) this may do the trick. But I still think HP builds a sturdier machine.

P.S - If anyone has a solution for the paper feed problem, please post it. Thanks.

Summary: Excellent color printer
Review: After doing a lot of web research, I finally chose the Canon S520 color printer to replace my Epson 740, which was beginning to give me problems and use a lot of ink. So far I love it! Installing the Canon printer software went smoothly, and the USB connection works well (there were problems with my PC recognizing the Epson printer using the USB port).

After using the Canon S520 for a few months now, I am extremely happy with my choice. It's much quieter and faster than my Epson, and appears to use less ink (it isn't constantly going through the noisy, time consuming and wasteful cleaning cycles that my Epson did). Black and white documents printed in Draft mode look just fine and are very fast to print. Although it's not billed as a "photo" printer, photos come out great too. In addition, the ink cartridges are cheaper than the Epson or HP cartridges, and you can replace one color at a time.

Summary: nice printer for the price
Review: Pros: you can replace the individual colors of ink, print quality isn't bad, good price.

Cons: sometimes takes a lot of ink, especially when printing pictures. It also self-cleans when you turn it on which seems to waste more ink.

Summary: Originally I loved this printer, BUT.
Review: After 18 months fairly low-volume use at home, the printhead suddenly stopped printing black. It looks like an electronic failure in the head itself; it is not clogged, and has only been run on genuine Canon cartridges.

When I bought this printer I was given to understand that the printhead was a consumable product, that it would last about 5,000 pages and that the cost would be around USD50 to replace it. Hah!. They sure were accurate about the lifetime. But the cost!. More like USD150!. This is ridiculous. I have now bought an Epson C86 and I am furious with Canon for deceiving me. I am also angry that all the environmental pollution that resulted from making this printer was in vain; its not economically repairable, so it will have to be dumped; more pollution. Canon are obviously gouging me; how could they sell the printer for the asking price if the head really cost anything like what they want for it.
