Summary: Switched from Epson C82 to canon i950
Review: I am a Mac user running OS X.2. I occationall print color photos as well as black and white photos and a lot of text. So, I wanted a printer for multi-purpose use. I decided to get the i950 because I heard so many good things about it. The setting up part was easy. I was annoyed that they DID NOT include a USB cable. At least it came with an OSX driver that I didn't have to download from web. First thing I wanted was to test the colors. I printed a color photo (in fine mode) but at first the output lacked warmth-red and yellow tones saturations were lower than that of on the screen . Using Photoshop 7, I converted the photo to Adobe RGB (1998). This time, the print came out beautifully (better than Espson C82). I have not installed any of the sofware that came with the printer. Canon claims the i950 print head produces ink drops of just 2 picolitres compared to that of 3 pcl for Epson and 4pcl for many other color printers. As a result of this small ink drop technology, ideally, one should get much better color gradations and almost invisible print dots (pixels) on the photos-producing more photorealistic prints. My photo output did look like a real photo. I also tried printing a black and white photo. By leaving the color adjustment in auto mode, it seems to print better grey tones. The B&W print looked great. Now printing text is another issue. The quality is good but the speed is noticibly slower than my old Epson C82. While you can't compare text quality to even a cheap laser printer, I thought it sufficed what I needed. At the highest print quality the text become a bit smudged. At the lowest quality, the text values were too light (especially if you chose a thin type weight). But, all in all it's still excellent. I would highly recommend this printer to anyone looking to print quality photographic prints.

Summary: Excellent Budget Photo Printer and Ok "All round" printer
Review: Bottomline:
If you want a photo printer go with the i950
If you want a great all-round printer go with the i850.

I owned both the i850 and i950, with the i850 first. The i850 is an great all-round printer printing fast text and photos. Using the Canon photo paper images look great, but simply lack the detail the i950 can provide with 6 inks and almost twice the nozzles and special photo inks. The extra nozzles not only make printing faster (at least for photos) but allow for more detail.

On a picture, printed from Photoshop 6.0, that contained lots of details and color, but specifically a tree with multi-colored (shades) of bark - on the i850 the tree looked good with good detail, but on the i950 the tree came to life, was sharper, with more tree/bark detail and color variations becoming visible. There was no question, the i950 was better, noticably for photos.

On mixed media (web page with graphics) the i950 and i850 were the same, but for some reason, the i850 was noticably faster. You get a larger black-ink cartridge w/ the i850 presumably favoring its intended role as a excellent all-round printer.

If price is an issue, the i850 is the printer for you ... If photo quality is the most important, then the i950 is for you ... Can't make up your mind? Go with the i950, the extra money is worth the results.

Summary: I Love It!!!!
Review: I am an advanced amateur photographer. A couple of months ago I shot my son's wedding on portrait film, scanned the negs and purchased this printer after much research. With Photoshop and the i950 I was able to produce a full wedding album that is indistinguishable from the work of the best professional labs.

I'm now working on my 30 year collection of slides to scan and print and I'm blown away with the versatility of the digital darkroom and the quality images this printer can produce. This is truely an amazing printer.

Amazon gave me the best price on the web and delivered before the date promised.

My only concern now is the longevity of the paper and ink. If Canon lives up to their 25 year claim half as well as they have done with the printer - I'll be pleased indeed.

Summary: Cable beware
Review: This printer, like many others, doesn't come with a USB cable. Don't make the same mistake I made by ordering the cable displayed on the same page as the printer (IFC-300). This cable is not for connecting the printer to a computer - I suspect it's for a Canon digital camera but nowhere is this explained. I eventually found out that the correct cable to order is the USB device cable by Belkin found elsewhere in Amazon. Good luck. Hopefully my next message will be about how happy I am with the printer once I get it connected to the computer.

Summary: Great product, no OS X documentation
Review: I was determined to use this printer with OS X (1.5) and not have to switch back and forth with 9.2. The documentation that came with the printer is brief, and only covers 9. What concerns I've had have been due entirely to my own ignorance, and playing around with the software has eventually solved all problems. Prints from Image Browser (especially RAW files) and PhotoShop are stunning. Black and White rivals SLR/lab prints. It's a stunning piece of technology at a great price.

Summary: Great Printer. Output better than I expected.
Review: I am totally amazed at the output of this printer. Buy good quality Canon photo paper and you'll be amazed at the output quality.

Followup 8/17/2003: I've had the printer for 4+ months now and have printed over 150 4x6 prints and 5 8x10 prints and several 5x7 prints, all on Canon Photo Paper Plus or Pro. The results still amaze me each time I print. I use this printer to print photos exclusively and Photo Magenta and Photo Cyan are used at a ratio of 3-4:1. The black hasn't been touched at all. And Magenta and Cyan are almost still full, whereas I'm having to replace Photo Magenta and Photo Cyan. Yellow is about half way used up. So my advice is to buy plenty of Photo Magenta and Photo Cyan. You'll definitely be using up those two colors very quickly if you print photos often.

Stick with Canon ink and Canon paper to get best results. The results are well worth the price.

Summary: Finally Satisifed
Review: Well my old Epson Stylus Photo Ex finally died on me and am I glad.

The Canon i950 is simply superb and when you look at the cost I believe it is easily the best value photo printer on the market.

I printed a photo downloaded from my digital camera without tweaking any settings just to see what the printer was capable of and I was blown away.

Used with high-quality photo paper you will not be able to tell the difference between these and 'real' photographs.

I nearly forgot, the printer is whisper quiet and plenty fast.

I am finally satisifed with the quality I get from my photo printer.

Thanks Canon!

Summary: From Imagination to Eyeballs
Review: Finally! Having endlessly read and imagined the results described in countless rave reviews, I dared and bought. Now that I've bought, I've printed. And now that I've printed, I can stare... and stare... and stare. Ahhhh. Very nice, indeed.

Summary: State of the Art***** Home Photo Printer
Review: I am a long-time--sometime professional--graphics guy. As such, I have been using flatbed and film scanners and digital cameras for many years. The i950 is my third dedicated photo printer. The previous ones were by HP and Epson. While both of these machines produced reasonably good results--especially the Epson--the Canon is the runaway winner in almost every department. I should note that for text I use a laser printer.

Going to Canon was not an easy decision. I had some not very pleasant memories of some Bubblejets in an office setting. Then, when the i950 arrived, it was missing the setup instructions. Immediately I called Canon tech support. Amazingly, I was connected right away to a technician who actually KNOWS what he is talking about. With very little delay, I got the new machine up and running.

The NEXT DAY, FedEx delivered the replacement setup material from Canon. Now that, my friend, is service!

Now--about the printer itself:

1. The i950 produces gorgeous prints--even on some of the third-party paper that I had on hand. I've gone over some of my test prints with a loupe and judge them virtually flawless. The full-bleeds are especially spectacular.

2. The machine is handsome (unlike the old Bubblejet), and the six-cartridge setup is very efficient.

3. The included software cannot compete with standalone packages, but Easy-PhotoPrint lives up to its name. It holds the user's hand and takes one through a series of clear choices that produce very good results with no confusion.

4. I still haven't adjusted to this printer's speed and lack of noise. It is very quiet and very fast.

5. My conclusion is that in the race to set the standard for professional quality home photo printers, Epson has fallen off the pace, and Canon is way out front!

Summary: A Printer with Effortless Color Matching - FINALLY
Review: I usually do not write reviews, but I just had to comment on the i950. My previous printer was a Canon S800, which was a good printer, but the color matching was very inconsistent. The i950 has solved this problem. It ships with a newer ICC profile and the color matching is perfect - yes perfect. Every - yes every - print that I have made, comes out just like it looks on the calibrated monitor.

Also, I have just discovered Canon Matte Photo Paper which I must say is totally awesome. I had previously used Canon Photo Paper Pro exclusively, but I like the matte better, and it is way cheaper - 5x cheaper! Absolutely beautiful results - no kidding.

FYI, I am using the printer on a Mac G4 and PhotoShop.
